News Tips Trix

This is the almost weekly SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2 and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to it.

HOW ADULTREVIEWS.NET GREW FROM NOTHING TO WHERE IT IS NOW
from Thomas

Do you still remember your first signup or the first time you was listed at The Hun?

This is the story about how Adult Reviews .net was born…. The story about how it evolved into being more than just a spare time project.

How we crawled through the mud in our business and ended up where we are now. I think we are some place in the middle of the hierarchy at the moment. If you want to know, then read this story which will continue in the next 2 editions of Sexswap in the top and middle ad spot. And there might actually be an economic interest in it for you…We have chosen to do it this way because it also adds some value to Sexswap – it’s not just advertisement, it’s also an interesting story. To read from the beginning go to
http://trix.sexswap.com/swap295.html

We are still considering our self newbies in many ways, especially of course regarding the things we haven’t played much with, but who isn’t a newbie in some ways? We can and should learn something new every day.

Now to the story:

Hi all, this is Jeppe taking over from Thomas. I want my 15 minutes of fame too ;-)
For those of you interested, I am the one editing all our reviews and most of the text on our site.

Well moving right along, we were of course more than happy with the success so far, but we kept thinking “If we can get this far by doing this, why not set some higher goals and aim to go even further?”. Every time you reach a goal, you need to set a new one to have something to motivate you. It was about this time we got contacted by another site wanting to do some business with us. The site was http://www.adultmonkey.com run by DynaMite (DynaSpain on GFY). He wanted to make a site similar to ours with real reviews of pay sites. He already had an extensive directory of sites in assorted categories, but without much description. So we agreed to share our reviews with him. In exchange he was going to start hire people to write more reviews in the same style as ours. That way our review database was going to grow at twice the speed. It worked out all right in the beginning, even though we did experience some coordination problems. But we never quite took full advantage of the deal. At least it got us some new contacts, which is very important in this business as well as any other business.

We wanted more publicity; we believed that we had a good product, so why not get as many people as possible to know it? And inspired by the way other webmasters get their product known; we came up with an innovative idea if we are to describe it ourselves. The idea was to get webmasters to link to our site and send as much traffic as possible. Yeah what is so special about that!? You might ask. Webmasters like to make money on their traffic and we had the tool for converting traffic into $$$ - our site. So we (i.e. Thomas) wrote some code enabling webmasters to send visitors to us, AND when these visitors found a site they liked, and clicked the link to it, their own referral codes for the reviewed sites would be in the link. So most likely they would make more than by sending all the traffic directly to just one sponsor.

Continued from the top ad spot…Despite all our efforts, we didn’t experience any success marketing the idea at all, maybe we were too bad at explaining the advantages or maybe we just didn’t contact the right people. And maybe many adult webmasters hesitate do try something too different, which is very understandable – especially if they depend on the money earned from the traffic, then it is often a question of having to choose the safe solution which might pay less, rather than taking risking it all.

Perhaps we were scared to rely entirely on other people doing our job because of our traffic manager experience as we described in the previous issue. But what we should have done was probably to contact an agency specialized in promoting products to adult webmasters, after all we only had experience convincing surfers whether or not to sign up to a site. Webmasters and especially adult webmasters is something completely different. So what we were able to learn from this experience was that you should stick to what you are good at, and then outsource the rest – just be sure you can trust the ones you outsource the job to. You might save some money by doing it yourself, but in the long run it more than makes up for it if you get professionals to do the job.

Often it is just about convincing a few well-known and respected people of the idea, and then others are more willing to try it out for themselves. Something as Bangbus was also something completely new and different when it first appeared on the net. The reality concept wasn’t seen before, but as more and more webmasters saw others promoting them, they gave it a shot too. It even ended up reaching a point where the market was over saturated and signup ratios went rock bottom.

Anyway the fact was that our program didn’t bring us much further at that time, but we still had developed a new feature for our site, which we could always return to develop further which we have done by now as explained here: http://adultreviews.net/webmasters/

Another threat became apparent to us at that point; competitors. Even though we can’t claim our site to be neither unique nor revolutionary, we think we were part of the inspiration to some of the new review sites appearing at that time. We of course started to worry if there would be enough demand for several review sites on the net and if we could maintain our share of the market.

But as we have later discovered, that is yet to become a problem. And actually we don’t see other review sites as competitors any more, but rather as partners or colleagues. In order to give our visitors the best possible advice before joining a pay site we have even made link exchanges to a few review partners. Both the reader and the webmaster of any reviewed site, deserves to be able to compare reviews of the same site on multiple review sites to minimize the risk of a single person taking a certain site apart for personal reasons or something similar.

So we welcome all our new colleagues and might even occasionally use each others’ sites as inspiration to improve.
So let’s use this possibility to send out our greetings to all our colleagues in case they should be reading this.

We believe in the idea that if someone copies your ideas you should take it as a compliment. The saying is true in many cases, but there are some sites we don’t welcome… Those are the ones that completely rip off a design or certain characteristics that are unique to a site and then claim to have invented it all themselves. At least we have experienced that 2 times to our knowledge.

Some people even feel free to use a number of reviews from our site or other review sites for their own review section without asking. Too bad they don’t want to play by the rules, since they would have been able to take advantage of all our reviews and not having to do the job copying the text, by teaming up with us instead - and getting a review plugin for their site. But hey, that’s their problem and I don’t feel sorry for them.

As the time went by, we continued doing what we knew worked and were always on the lookout for new sources of traffic. Many things have been tried, and much money has been wasted. Most of the things we have tried haven't been too good.

WHY ARE SEXTOYS ILLEGAL IN ALABAMA from Greg
Greg writes
Why are sex toys illegal in Alabama? Because when the twisters hit the
trailer parks it's hell tryin' to dig a vibrator out of the barn wall.

What's a sex toy in Alabama? Anything with 'Black and Decker' on it.

How come women in Alabama can't have sex toys? Because their kinfolk get jealous.

Why are sex toys illegal in Alabama? Because they think a dildo will get you pregnant and you'll have half-plastic babies.

Why are sex toys illegal in Alabama? Cause you can't refit em' to work with a still.

How come sex toys were banned in Alabama? Cause they saw 'made in China' on the dildos and they figured they were communist secret weapons.

I read the article about new legislation about obscenity. That's why I use
my own home-made editorial cartoons. The fellows at www.adultsitelaw.com
agreed wholeheartedly. Using non-adult editorial content is an awesome way of
protecting your site under freedom of expression. The guys with evilly
fiendish sites will fall if they produce them inside the U.S. but outside the
U.S. they're safe. Us regular guys will survive.

Greg tells me he might start a subscription service for webmasters who could d/load and use his editorial cartoons for like $5 or $10 a month. If you might be interested, drop him an email Evolbaby@aol.com

RE: SINGLE LETTER DOMAINS from Stephen
Stephen writes
I was wondering the same thing about single character domain names so I
emailed IANA back in 2001 with the question:

The majority of one letter domains are not used and are registered under "Reserved Domain." If at all possible how does one acquire one of these domains?

And got back the response:

Dear Stephen,

The single-letter domains in .com, .net, .org, and .edu
are registered to the IANA for extensibility and
Internet-infrastructure uses. Accordingly, these names
are not for "sale" or subject to transfer under established
policy. A few of the single-letter names were registered
before the reservation was made (in 1993) and are
grandfathered for the time being.

Thank you,
IANA

RE: NEW PORN DOMAIN LAW from Monica
Monica writes
I believe a lawyer would have to clarify, but I took it to mean that sites
that have sex or porn in the name will definately not be found as
misleading. However, that doesn't mean that all sites require the words
sex or porn in their names. I'm pretty sure this law will target porn
domain names that specifically mislead people into thinking they will be
accessing a family friendly site. There are plenty of people out there
that snap up domain names previously used for something family oriented and
turn it into a porn site to sap the existing traffic.

I just heard about RSS myself doing some research about XML. I think
it is a blog/news kind of thing using XML to automatically update a
site. From http://backend.userland.com/rss

"RSS is a Web content syndication format. Its name is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is dialect of XML. All RSS files must conform to the XML 1.0
specification, as published on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
website."

Steve writes
from: http://scriptingnews.userland.com/
"Referer spam is starting to get pretty annoying. A couple of weeks
ago we finally figured out why porn sites add themselves to referer
pages on high page-rank sites: to improve their placement in search
engines. Last night at dinner Andrew Grumet came up with the
solution. In robots.txt specifically tell Googlebot and its relatives
to not index the Referers page. Then the spammers won't get the
page-rank they seek. Maybe they'll bother someone else."

oh man. How did the spoiled sorority girl win. I also was yelled at poor heidi "be quiet!" LOL Survivor 101 rule #1 "keep your mouth shut and never brag". I always find it amazing when players feel compelled to brag since it is a sure sign they are headed home. This year had to be one of the best seasons ever. There were so many power swithces and interesting things going on. Amazing Race at the end of May! Check it out...you heart pumps for an hour a week...its like a hollywood movie...what are hollywood movies? They are chase scenes ROFL and so amazing race is a 60 minute chase scene each week. And you need two skills 1) knowledge of world airports 2) communication skills ...you need to be kind and easy going and now how to meet "johnny on the street" in a foreign land and befriend him and get him to show you the fastest way from katmandu to timbuktu.

Continued from the middle ad spot...

The trick is to pick up the surfer at the right moment where he is ready to look at new things.

For instance 404 traffic. Most of the surfers expected to get one thing but end up with a completely different thing. They will most likely be annoyed instead of interested in buying something. Of course a little fraction of the traffic will find it interesting, but usually not that big a share. Therefore the traffic should be targeted in some way. But targeted traffic isn’t something you just order 100k of per day. It takes time to make new contacts and try traffic out. And people controlling good sources of traffic are hard to convince to try other things - they know that what they are doing now works, why risk anything because a small newcomer starts bragging about their exceptional new brilliant concept... And especially when nobody else are using it… But rule number one; everything has to start somewhere...

As our number of contacts grew, our traffic also went up.

But it takes time, and it can be hard to keep being patient... We have learned that you can easily burn your fingers rushing things... By that I mean money out the window... So the strategy most of the time is patience (to a certain limit)... it will pick up...Hopefully it will be like when you are waiting to go and take a piss... The longer you wait the better it will be when you are able to let the stream flow... I think most guys know that feeling :-) We got through the summer... without noticing the infamous summer slowdown we might add, and realized that it was time for a new design for AR, it might help the situation... and we were getting tired of the original design. Nothing was wrong with the old design, it was really functional but it was kind of old and didn’t really reflect any relation to the adult world...We asked our friend who designed the old site, to make a template for a new design... We waited.... We asked again, but it seemed like he didn't get the impression that it was important... That was the time where we decided to end the deal with him and move on. Until that point the agreement was that he should be paid 2% of the gross income... This had started to become a decent amount too.

Somewhere Orchid Designs - http://www.orchiddesigns.com/ - came up, I contacted Spycam and we agreed on a price.
He did a really good design job and we have used him for our design jobs since then.
Spycam has also evolved to a good contact who is someone you can always share your thoughts or ideas with...
He knows all about how it is to be busy most of the day, but there are always a few mins to spend on us, it works the other way around as well of course.

After the new layout had replaced the old, we didn't see any direct improvements in conversion wise, but it wasn't a thorn in our side anymore and something we felt needed to be done under all circumstances. That was august 2002. Looking back in the history using Revstats’ useful revenue tracking history function things started to take off even more.
That will be covered in the next two editions of Sexswap.

The site this is all about is http://www.adultreviews.net - if you don't know it take a look - it might interest you one way or another.
Over and out for now.
