This is the almost weekly SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2 and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to it.

How AdultReviews.net grew from nothing to where it is NOW

Do you still remember your first signup or the first time you was listed at The Hun?

This is the story about how Adult Reviews .net was born…. The story about how it evolved to be more than just a spare time project.

How we crawled through the mud in our business and ended up where we are now.

If you want to know, then read this story which will continue in the next 4 editions of Sexswap in the top and middle ad spot. And there might actually be an economic interest in it for you…
We have chosen to do it this way because it also adds some value to Sexswap - it’s not just advertisement, it’s also an interesting story.
Hehe, we might even get Andy to read the advertisements in his own newsletter.

We are still considering our self newbies in many ways, especially of course regarding the things we haven’t played much with, but who isn’t a newbie in some ways?
We can and should learn something new every day.

- - -

It all started in May or June 2001, where we, I Thomas and my business partner Jeppe were out driving with another friend… Right before Jeppe got off the car, we started talking about ways to earn money. Jeppe was more or less always short of them. I suggested that online porn might be a solution, a friend of mine ran a freehost, sexusa.net at that time and he seemed to make some money from it.

After that car ride we joked a little about it… Registered the domain porn4u.dk and then it was time for exams. So far we had a domain and were thinking about creating a pay site. We had not researched and didn’t know how bad an idea that would have been… Starting up a pay site without any experience in the adult webmaster world at all.

During the exams we started thinking a little over it and came to the conclusion that we wanted to create something more original. Something that took a little more effort than just putting some pictures online and then charge the surfers for access to them.

Jeppe came up with the idea to create a site reviewing other porn sites. We had not seen any such sites ourselves, so it would also add something new to the net. Besides there are review sites for almost anything else, so why not an obvious thing as porn sites too?
A site where we helped the surfer finding some decent porn instead of all the scam sites they were spammed with while surfing.
We arranged with a friend that he should do the basic design of the page, and then we could get it started and build from that.
However it took some time to motivate him and get him started. It can be tough to find the motivation to work/code during the summer after passing the exams. Beer is more interesting when you are young :-)
Mid July we had the design from the designer, and we started writing a few test reviews. We got the template for the reviews made, and the rating system was also evolved.
Now we were ready to write real reviews, but where should we go? Who should we ask?

In the next part of this story you can read about how we got started writing real reviews, which sponsors helped us and more.

The site you have been reading about is
http://www.adultreviews.net/

Check it out, and if you think you could use such a site for some of your traffic, click the “Webmasters” button in the upper right corner of your browser window.

The next part is placed in the middle add spot in this newsletter.

Its a thick version of sexswap news this week. There are some good emails on email filtering! Lots of good comments on spam assassin and mailwasher. I am liking the news right now...in investors business daily the other day, I counted 7 of the top 10 stories to be positive. The news on the war is fading as we rebuild. SARS seems to be in check. Earning are good and the country is moving forward. I am expecting a solid third and fourth quarter for 2003!

As for the starting point of getting into porn, we looked at the site that inspired us to start working in porn. At the freehost sexusa.net they used Gamma’s moneybar in their header. The theory was that because they used Gamma, they must be a decent program paying at least sometimes.
We signed up to Gamma Entertainment’s program, gammacash.com - I replied to the welcome mail with our intentions and luckily for us, Charles picked it up and said it wouldn’t be a problem giving us a temporary access.
My reply is here

> > sites. Please tell me by which sites you would like to begin ?

Wow, that was a lucky hit from the start, we now had some sites to review.
If you look at the bottom of http://www.adultreviews.net/list_all.html you will see that the first sites are Gamma’s.

We then made the reviews, the first was posted 2001-08-05 and I remember that our first signup was 2001-08-18, I made a post about it on a Danish board.
The guys did not think their first signup was something special. But it was special for us, we were still very new to all the adult webmastering.
As for traffic I’m not sure which sources we used. We submitted AdultReviews(AR) to many link lists as an alternative freesite. We weren’t listed many places and later I found out why. AR wasn’t a freesite and therefore we were actually lucky to have been listed the places we did.

Anyway we had now tasted the taste of money from the surfers so we wanted more.
At the same time Steve from Lightspeed contacted us because he wanted to have his Lightspeed University Cheerleaders site reviewed. We made the review, and submitted the backstage area for that as a gallery at The Hun. Bingo for some reason Patrick did list it, it was our first try.
A few days after we got the mail from TheHun about him wanting to list it, the traffic started coming in. It was at a time where the cheerleader niche wasn’t saturated so it actually made $135 the first day.
That was crazy for us at that time. Another thing is our hosting company at that time, Azero - www.azero.dk - it wasn’t directly an adult host and they weren’t used to that kind of traffic so they asked us to pay for three months of traffic upfront! Hmmm that was not what we had expected and their pricing was crazy. Therefore we asked at the boards and ended up moving to a Danish adult host - Wizardweb - they were reselling server space hosted at Rackshack.
That was a clever choice we made, it was easier and they were used to the amount of traffic in the adult world.
In the next Sexswap edition this story will continue.
If you want to influence on what the story should contain details about, go to http://www.adultreviews.net/webmasters/story/ and cast your vote.

And again if you think you should offer your traffic an alternative way to find the porn sites they like, take a look at http://www.adultreviews.net/webmasters/
You can have a version of AR with your codes on the links to the sponsors.
Send us your traffic and let the reviews filter the surfer to the sites he likes.
There is a trial where we pay you $0.08 pr click out from AR the first 14 days you use our program. Then you can test our program without spending time on signing up for all the sponsors.
Take a look at it and see if it’s something for you.

Remember to read the next 4 editions of Sexswap.
And to Andy, you do a good job making Sexswap, it’s a great newsletter without all the formal stuff seen elsewhere.

RE:MAILWASHER from Chuc
Chuc writes
I receive an average of 500-700 emails/day, maybe 20 of which I want to
read. I've been using Mailwasher for over a year now, and I love
it. While you have the OPTION to use 3rd party filters with it, I
recommend against that for the reason you gave, that they block mail you
want to receive. I want to be in complete control, and Mailwasher lets you
do that. After it gets your message headers, you have checkboxes for
Delete, Bounce, or Blacklist. Or you can right-click on messages for the
options of adding that sender to your friends list or blacklisting the
sender's domain. It's easy to create filters on anything in the headers
(subject text, from text, etc.) or even on text contained in the body of
the message.

I work with it a little every day, adding new filters for stuff that my
existing filters didn't get. My only caution about this program is that
you shouldn't add filters when you're tired and stupid. I've been known to
blacklist my own domains or domains like Yahoo. A few times, I blacklisted
my personal email address when I got spam from me (it spoofed the From:
field with my email address). And I've occasionally created some stupid
filters, for example setting up a filter to delete messages addressed to
"aster" because I was getting a lot of spam addressed to "aster." That
filter also marked anything addressed to "webmaster" for deletion.

Mailwasher Pro also has an affiliate program. I signed up for that
recently since I was always recommending Mailwasher to people anyway. If
you do end up deciding to go with Mailwasher, I'd appreciate it if you use
this link when you decide to buy the Pro version:

RE:EVIDENCE ELIMINATOR from Ben
Ben writes
I can not agree with that shrill post from Evidence Eliminator. The EE program deletes cookies. Visitors without cookies costs us signups. Deceptive marketing gives us bad name. All these hard sell intrusive popups are also driving the popup killing software market. Evidence Eliminator = Bad for all of us on multiple fronts. The main thing about deceptive marketing is it pisses off our customers. They hate it. They don't like being called morons and they like even less being tricked into buying something they actually don't need, want or care for. "They can see my harddrive!!! I *have* to do something about that... NOW!!". Now we all know that's just not true. The advertising often uses an iFrame of the users harddrive, of course we know that the only reason they can see the files is because it's *their* harddrive... They own it... of course they can see it. However the deceptive marketing scares the user into thinking that it's a hack and that other hackers can do the same thing. These Evidence Eliminator programs mainly help only a couple of people. First they make the software companies a bunch of money and they like that. Second they let affiliate programs get away without paying for every signups because the cookies have been deleted, so this saves affilate programs money. However for everyone else in the industry all it does is cost us. Don't piss off your customers. There are many ways in which this is coming back to bite us all.

MULTI AFFILIATE SIGNUP from Greg
Greg writes
I would like it if there was a one-stop signup thingie for affiliate programs. Every other freakin' day a new site shows up and I gotta fill out forms and shit and click this link and that link and peruse through umpteen free content/banners etc. If there was an 'Affiliate Program' where all qualified affiliates could submit to and we could just click and fill out a form and perhaps each month come back and peruse the new ones that would be trick to the sick. Also a bundle of banners, galleries with code already in would save us time and make more loot!

RE: MAILWASHER AND SPAM ASSASSIN from Gary
Gary writes
I was using Mailwasher all the time up until last week, we finally converted the completeweb.net mail server over to use spamassasin, and it is working great! Kept the rules mild, it has only caught 1 that it wasn't supposed to (a spam someone forwarded, so it worked right, but now allow to:spam-complaint through). And has only let 1 through it shouldn't have. About half my daily mail was now spam, about 250 from servers and customers, about 250 spams, so it's working great! We have it sending the probably-spam and definately-spam to on server mailboxes, that we can get to and check a few times a day with squirrelmail, a unix web based email, and can check and re-forward anything we should be getting to the main mailbox, and trash the rest. That way we can still see what it would have just trashed sight unseen, and catch any important ones just in case. Works great!! It is also using the spamhaus and some other list to update from, so is real effective.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

RE: MAILWASHER from Chuc
Chuc writes
I always use mailwasher before I boot up my email program. Mailwasher
grabs all the mail headers from the various email accounts I've got it
configured for and then presents me with the list. It shows me who each
message is from, size, and the subject. Next to each line are 3 columns of
checkboxes, for delete, bounce, and blacklist, plus a column for status
(filtered, blacklisted, friend, virus). I just scroll down the list
checking boxes. I can right-click on any of them to add that one to my
friend list or to blacklist the whole domain it comes from. I can set up
filters on multiple fields and multiple conditions. For instance, if the
message comes from picpost.com and the subject is "your post has been
approved" mark that message for deletion automatically. That's how I deal
with autoresponders from domains I don't want to blacklist.

Today, for example, I had 608 new messages. Mailwasher already had about
500 of them marked for deletion based on my filters and blacklists. I
clicked the "Process Mail" button and it deleted all of those off my mail
server. That left me about 108 headers to scroll through, clicking
checkboxes or creating new filters. When I was done doing that, I clicked
"Process Mail" again to finish deleting the remainder of the stuff I didn't
want off the mail server. Then I opened my email program and downloaded
the remaining 15 or so messages that I actually wanted to receive.

With the volume of mail sent to me every day, I probably spend an average
of 15 minutes/day with Mailwasher getting rid of all the stuff I don't want
to download. Before Mailwasher, it used to take me up to an hour just to
download my mail (with all the viruses and attachments) before I could
start going through it message by message.

The most important thing to me besides how easy Mailwasher is to use, is
that I'm in complete control over my filters and blacklists. Third-party
filtering systems are really bad if you're in the adult industry. My old
ISP recently implemented a 3rd-party spam filter across the board. It
filtered out most of the email coming from domains in the adult
industry. My mail dropped from 600 messages/day to like 9. I wasn't
getting mail from sponsors, AVS sites, or mail sent to webmaster at any of
my domains (those all forward to my main address which subjected them to
the filter). SexSwap was an unusual exception.
Life before Mailwasher was pretty miserable.

TESTING? from Bosley
Bosley asks
I have read many of your newsletters (which I love by the way!) and you are always talking about testing changes. Now, I may have missed this answer in previous newsletter but what exactly is your method of testing? I ask because I have a few sites that I am trading traffic on but the traffic could be much higher (its only at about 250 hits a day). Now I want to try some changes and really do some very detailed checking to see what effect they have. I was thinking of putting up a counter and writing down the details, making the change and checking the details in a week. And then making the next change..... Is there something more I should try or look at when doing Or a different method completely? Should I wait more then a week with only this little traffic? Basically the only things I am changing is moving some link trades to a different part of the page. But I want to get an effective way to test under my thumb before I just start ripping things apart. So, maybe if you could run down kinda how you test your sites, I could see how to do it myself.

Andy writes
Normally the yardstick I use is "money at the end of the day". Its that simple. Clicks, ratios, signup amount, etc...you have to compare the income made with one method with the income made with another. If you are testing the exact some sponsor with a new idea, then you can just go signups vs signups. If you are testing sponsor vs sponsor, you have to go cash at the end of the day since one sponsor might pay $25, once $35, and one $40. As the numbers get smaller, it is harder and harder to test because you are getting poorer and poorer date unless you run it long term. 250 hits a day you might have to test 2-4 weeks since the numbers are so low and we need statistical significance. A counter is a very good way. When I try some changes, I do look at a counter on that page and see if it is growing or shrinking. To recap...if it is income, I test income vs income at the end of the day or week or month. You also have to weigh in with how reliable a sponsor is. Sometimes new hotshot programs appear and they might payout a little extra but I shy away from them and stick with stability. If you are just testing pure hits on a page you control, then a counter works well and you monitor the changes. It is still go to monitor if you are making more or less income on that traffic stream.

DS3 AT HOME? from Mel
Mel asks
I want to set up several servers in my house and wanted to get your opinion
on what to do and what not. Please give me your expert advice. Information
I need would be what type of a connection I would need to host a large
amount of servers, who to contact for a block of IP addresses, who to
contact to set up a DS3 or higher line and costs. I would greatly
appreciate if you could shed some light on this subject.

Andy writes
You will have to contact a local ISP or perhaps verizon. Its not easy but its not impossible. First you have to see if you can even do it. Not all housing tracks will have the correct wiring. You next need to see what size line you can get. Can you only get a T1 or can you get a DS3. A fractional DS3 probably starts around $1000 a month. A fully open DS3...I have no idea right now but my guess is $25,000 - $40,000 a month. To put in a T1, you most likely will have to trench your front yard. You will need a router. My guess is that you will spend $2000 - $5000 to get set up, depending how you do it. You will not save any money compared to co-loating. You will have piece of mind that the servers are under your control.

So I guess first step is to contact a local ISP or verizon, and see if you even can do it. I prefer a local ISP that I trust since it is so much easier than working with a giant company. It is rare to request such a line at home. You will want to talk to someone cool in the company, not $5 an hour johnny tech support.
