It looks like a good week for search engine news. Another engine bites the dust and Disney blinks and puts infoseek up on the chopping block. Me and Legendary Lars where just bellyaching about the whole thing. Andy ICQs "LOL they fucked that engine up." Lars adds "yeah they did go.com vs goto.com and now neither company uses those domains what dumbasses.."

It's so disappointing to see engines that used to rule the net, swimming in traffic, then get mismanged and hammered into nothing. Money lit on fire. Disney then cut a deal this week with google, dropping overture. Overture's stock price is taking a beating. I am curious to what engines will be around in 5 years.

Would be interesting to hear from you, as well as get feedback from other webmasters on how to make money with a situation like this. I feel it might be a good topic to explore. I tried going to /www.youaremyfriend.com today...the page wouldn't even load. It is a sad thing to see all that traffic go to waste. I would find a sponsor, or push affiliate programs I'd find at commision junction...charge a small fee????. ...what else is there? Love to hear what others would do in this situation.

Here are a few thngs you could do

1. Load each card with a pop up sponsor
Sure if might suck but if you have traffic and are losing your shirt, you have to try a lot of things and see what makes money. Pop undies might do the trick

2. Upsell
at the end of each card say "do you want to ad candies with this order" and "do you want to add flowers with this order" and work with a flower and a candy affliliate sponsor

3. Membership
This is personally what I would try. Allow peole to do one of 3 free cards a month (and mayb have ads built into those cards). If they want no ads or to send more cards, they play a fee of $5 a month to use the site and send cards until they are blue in the face.

I am sure there are many ideas to try..those are three that come to the top of my head

Besides that I would like to ask you one thing. I have subscribed to cybererotica advertising programs some time ago and they are not accepting people from other countries besides USA. Do you know if this also true for other advertising programs? I live in Brazil and used to work with/for the industry some years ago.

I think many of them won't take foreign accounts now since the fraud rate is very high with foreign webmasters and there is no easy legal recourse. I am sure there are affiliates that take global webmasters but many of the larger US ones have decided to stick to american based promoters. This started occuring about two years back.You might post on one of the webmaster forums to find more global affilaites. I'll try adding this to the newsletter

Can anyone add to this....is the reason some of the larger affiliates won't take non US based webmasters due to fraud and legal recourse? What are some good global affiliates that you use and like? email andy@lips.com thanks :)

been battling file sharing dipshits for several years. What they do is get a
password to your site either by some dumb shmuck customer who gives it up or
they pool to buy one. Now you've got a guy with broadband and he snags your
content then he file shares it with umpteen thousand people. Even minors.
Since no one can monitor what files he's sharing, you the content creator or
manager don't know. Why pay for porn when you and your gang can get it for
practically free? Hidden message boards, chat forums etc. Check out the
'groups'. A hotbed of stashed goodies. There's no law against it as they're
not paying for it. If Joe Blow gets 1,000 pics from a porn site that he
shares with 10,000 friends who aren't 'paying' him for it, that's 10,000
customers you don't have. Hurts AVSs and paysites equally. There's no law
against sharing but there might be a law or laws regarding 're-distribution'
or 'distribution' of certain files. Perhaps if the gang sharing files has
paid for an ISP that constitutes 'paying' for content that doesn't come from
the owner. Somewhere there's a way to handle this. We webmasters can't police
the entire web but we can set things up where people won't want to swipe.
Perhaps we webmasters need a 'Cornpone Meeting' ( see 1950s movie 'Li'l
Abner' for definition ). Perhaps let these 'groups' or ' forum' companies
know that they may be liable if their members are storing or sharing
copyrighted material. ( I know it's tough cause the music industry is having
a helluva time with this.)

I was really sorry to see every body jump this poor guy that wrote about PayPal to let you know his story. I'm an adult webmistress, and I've been in the industry for about 3 years now, and even though I run a small site, I make enough to put my kid through college with it. So I don't play games with my credit card processors, because I need their services. But about 3 or 4 months ago, I went to sign into my PayPal account, and it said that it had been (I can't remember the exact word) frozen or deactivated. I called them to find out what was going on, and they said that I had "Suspicious or Ilegal Activities" in my account, and they were keeping my money for 6 months. They owed me around $247. It's not a lot of money, but I had legally and honestly earned it. So I argued it, and guess what? They told me that the only way for them to release my money was if I paid them $1,500. Now, I ask: Why didn't they tell me that I had to pay that money before I let those memberships recur? and... Why $1,500 when everybody else is charging $750? I was never notified by PayPal about the need of paying them the Visa Registration Fee. Why are they keeping my money then? In this country that is called Theft of Services. And those of you that back PayPal so vehemently, should be supporting your fellow webmasters, and not attacking them. We have enough problems with the rest of the world trying to get rid of us, why should we make their job easier?

I have written a unix shell script to parse my logs
for my site (drewslife.com), but i feel confident
there is an easier way. there are a lot of log
analysis tools out there.

what i think would be cool is a tool or script that
runs once a day before my logs are archived. that

If you take a spread sheet and run every number from 1 thru 100 in it (I will paste at the bottom of the page) you will quickly see a pattern. There is only one answer per 10 combo. So all the 90s equal 84 and then all the 80s equal 72 and then all the 70s equal 63. Because of the limites answers...it is easy to fool people. There are only ten possible answers. (they are all multiples of 9.) Now how come the symbols change. Well he makes all ten answers the same each time it refreshes and that is what makes it seem fancy when really we would be onto him in seconds if he didnt randomize the rest of the numbers each time.
