Two items caught my eye this week. The first is right at the top of the newsletter this week and is a beta product by microsoft called threedegrees. I haven't tried it yet but it just might be a hot new trend. It is a file sharing / chat / music listening product that you use with ten of your close friends. This is aimed at the younger MTV crowd. People are loving it since it is very social. The second article is at the bottom of the page and is called "Your Next Customer Is Virtual. But His Money Is Real". This is interesting to me since it is about games like sims online. I think both these items deal with how we socialize online. Currently we use email, websites, chat, and instant messages. I think virtual worlds may be the next hot method. I think three degrees is a combo of several current method but presented in a new way. How are we going to make money off these? I have no idea just yet ;) But I am sure many possibilities will present themselves.

I use PowerDVD to play dvd's on my computer. It has a screen cap function built right into it. Any screen capture program that supports overlay (very important) can be used to capture a still if you pause your player on the frame you want. If it's a cheapie program that only captures a full screen shot then you can always load it into whatever photoeditor you use and crop it. But most screen cap programs have an option for "selected area" or "active window" or similar. The important thing to do is to make sure the proggie can get a pic from an overlay. A lot of them will just show a black box or screen if you try to grab a cap from any video.

Hi Andy, I've got some experience with European broadband backbones and to be perfectly honest, there isnta lot to choose between them. However, I would say one thing. Target audience. If you expect to be hitting a euro-xentric audience, the less hops the IP packets how to travel over, the better. If you expect a predominantly US/general market, then the same applies. You can make this decision after running the site for a while. The dutch market in particular is great for hosting as it has some of the best backbone infrastructure outside of the US and has direct connections to Atlanta and Hawaii. Other key direct connections go from London, North Scotland and Scandinavia.

The guy that was asking about the hosting in Europe. I think that racksale.com is there and when I used them they had very fast connections and servers. However. During the month that I used them, there were 3 hours of down time that that denied having, which were reported to my by a third party company that I used to monitor. And then they billed me 2 times in one month and had kinda crappy customer service... They fired the guy that was answering the phone, but I had enough and moved away from them. But as for the speed... You will not notice any slowdown or problems as long as you are careful. remember that US laws do not apply in a lot of cases.

BASIC SCREEN CAPTURE UTILITIES TUTORIAL from Guru-O-gif
You can make screen caps the old fashioned way with just the keyboard key PRNT SCRN and then PASTE that into photoshop or any other draw/paint style program. This works well for one or two captures. Sometimes you might be watching a video or playing a game and need to take many shots in a row. If this is the case, then one that does it automatically and also saves them, saves a lot of time. Now before you watch a video or start a game or what have you...launch the MWswap and you can even minimize it if you want to. Under the capture menu, you will see the keyboard shortcuts. To do a full screen use Ctrl+Shift+D and you will here a camera shutter, and the screen capture will be taken and automatically saved to your dektop! Ctrl+Shift+D Now the program might spin you back to the desktop...if it does...read No.7 tip to follow

No.7 Alter the Settings for Snapping
To prevent yourself from coming back to the desktop each shot you might toggle some settings. Remember the autosaving in the SETTINGS above....after doing that...click the tab for Snapping. Try Unchecking "Show Snap Preview in Window" and "restore MWsnap". I think the first one stopped me from coming back to the desktop each time. snapping settings

Just read the article you sent on virtual worlds. It sounds like a lot of people really want the concept of virtual worlds to succeed. Time will tell if this is the next big thing. Interesting that they make Sims Online sound like a footnote along the road. I think this is here to stay, but my gut feeling is that there will always be plenty of people who think it is a waste of time. It may evolve into a kind of enhanced instant messaging service or email for some people, too, ie, less novelty of meeting strangers, and more interacting with RL friends and family.

There are a few reasons why I think virtual worlds will succeed.

1. virtual worlds are easy for socilization
water always flows down hill. In real life I can call friends on the phone...set a time, get in the car...drive around...find a spot...hang out...come home. This is exhausting. People mainly get together to communicate with their friends. Bruce...do you and I have much physical contact when we meet to play poker in vegas? I don't think we do...so the argument that people get together for physical contact does not hold water with me. Next...we do look at each other....but I could be looking at Bruce sim just as easily as Bruce real life. People get together to communicate and share experiences etc...and that is so much easier walking into your computer room and logging in. Why are there 2922 people playing poker at paradisepoker.com and only 40 playing in the bellagio right now? The reason is....it is way easier to play online. It is also now way easier to socialize online.

2. virtual worlds are fast exciting
you meet large numbers of people in a short period of time. You also can zip in and out of different groups quickly...like pub crawling or like changing stations on tv.

3. virtual worlds are evolving quickly
they continue to become more complex and interesting.

pretend you know an old friend that does not like technology and would consider this nonsense. Now imagine that person does have a hobby...he is pasionate about hocky. Now let me make a virtual world called "Hockey World. In this world you can be the avatar of any player you wish, or you can be a person. In this world you watch old hockey clips and discuss them with your friends. In this world there is an actual scale model of every NHL stadium in the country that you can walk around and touch and feel. In this world you can play simulated hockey games. In this world you get hockey stats and statistics in the various properties. In this world you can watch hockey games live at a pub with your freinds and chat about them. In this world you can set up "what ifs" for the Canada Russian series of the 1970s and see how the games would go differently.

all of a sudden, a guy that does not care about virtual worlds...might find this world kind of exciting. Now that is a long ways away because you need a big population to carve out narrow niches.

THIS WILL BE HELLA BIG FOR DATING AND PORN
I have no doubt that the next huge craze in online dating and online porn will be virtual. Its the next logical step and you can see it already in some of the virtual worlds. Humans want to hook up, and there are far less inhibitions on the computer. I believe that in 10 years or less...virtual dating and virtual porn worlds will be very popular. The big software is still not there and no one is really licensing their engines yet. In time this will happen.
