Some folks like to drive 55, and then some like to drive 65, or maybe 75MPH. And a few fools like to dive 85MPH." I am old and crusty now and so I like to drive 65..hee hee hee. We always have the double appointment. One now where we are short papers since no one sends them out on time, and then we go back in april and dot the t's and cross the i's =)P I highly recommend a good taxman or woman to everyone. They are worth their damn weight in gold. And if you are big money-baby, I suggest a tax attorney since you want to make sure you are legit and making the most coin you can. Hope all your taxes are going well. I still have big losses from the dot com crash days so taxes have been simpler over the last 3 years.

I got the new shuttle running live! Craig the programmer worked his magic one evening and configured apache, mysql, php, and email, just the way I like it. I have this crusty old slackware directory habit of shoving apache in /var/lib I have no idea why...I just like it there ;) I found out the box was resetting because of some wierd hotplug script that was lookng for USB stuff. Since this is a server and no Xwindow, I turned everything off and the box runs tits. Slackware beta 9 boots fast as stink. The box has been rock solid. CPU useage has gone from 50%-90% to 5% to 30% with 40 players in live games and 60 domains taking a few hits. The jump from a PIII 1 gig to a P4 2.66 gig with a modern mobo, really makes a difference. Everything feels snappy. I am in love with the shuttle chassis. I can't wait to buy more of them. It is an outstanding case and motherboard solution. Great bios, great chipset, great cooling, easy access case, and a damn trick AGP and PCI regular slot.

IDEA FOR NEW TRIX - DATABASE SPEWING FOR FUN AND PROFIT
I was reading an internet marketing newsletter last week, and I almost never agree with the authors LOL. He mentioned something in passing that caught my eye. He said something like there is a zillion tons of crud hidden away on the web in DBs. This is very true. Then I got to thinking. Why now SPEW your DB into say 1000 webpages...maybe once a month, just to make spider traps? I often see DB pages in the engine but I am sure the engines penalize them. Let me give you a wierd example. My half-life game server runs a stats program for players and every player is stored on a page. These have been sucked into google many a time.

Here is an example....be warned that I have sinced changed the stats program on the server and so the error404 tosses people back to the new page. Therefore I will be using cache links

ok, so I play sims online way too much and was fascinated by their logos. Since I am a photoshop noob, I could not for the life of me figure out how the heck to reproduce these crafty techniques. See the red and white sims logo on the top of the page. I wanted to learn to make that. There is also a plactic like blue logo I wanted to duplicate

No.1 First I start out just with a honking big 1000x1000 transparent square and then in the center I tossed a rectangle with websafe red to blind your eyes out LOL

Shep sent in a great link to a two month story in linux magazine. the story is called Lamp Post and the author configured Apache with mod_log_sql to log all Web traffic to a MySQL database, using one table for each virtual domain. He then goes on to build a basic Web interface to query and summarize the growing mass of data that MySQL is now collecting. This sounds fricken cool Scottie.

The MAIN reason for the falloff of AOL is what AOL ain't willing to admit: They Fu&*%$#$ their members and content providers over. Simple and plain as that. In the old days people flocked to AOL to visit their favorite forums, chat rooms and content. Most of this was made by average folks whom AOL recruited in it's early days to attract members. It worked like a charm and things went great up until about 2 years ago when AOL bought TIme Warner. All of a sudden they started treating the same people who built interest in AOL like left over hoes. They wouldn't support them, banned them and wouldn't support the Communit Leaders program against members who were attacking members. Instead of taking the side of the members who were behaving and having a good time they took the side of the bad guys and offered them extra free months if they stayed on! What kind of bullshit is that? So forums and chat rooms left and the members left with them. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Now AOL is crying the blues and still won't own up to the fact that they've been charging too much a month for stuff people don't want. AOL had all the opportunity in the world to pay the forums that MADE AOL but decided to get cheap so now they're gonna take a dive because Microsoft Network and Earthlink are getting wise and have been contacting the old forums that AOL USED to have and the fans are leaving AOL like red ants after a bag of flaming hot cheetos. AOL isn't worth damn near $30 a month. That's DSL change homie! People can get better and cheaper service all over the place. In order for AOL to survive it's got to get back to it's roots and take it's lumps like everyone else. The community leaders were even fired for voiceing opposition concerns! There's an old saying, " You can't serve two gods at once, " well AOL had better decide who it's going to serve, either the members in good standing or the suits at the statistics boards.

RIPPING AND GRABBING SONGS FROM A CD from guru-O-gif
I know most of you did this 38 years ago LOL. I have never tried it until 3 days ago. I had a CD in my computer and wanted to send a song to a friend. I thought I could just drag it from the CD and onto the desktop and attach it to an email. I soon found I need to dive into the world of the grabber and ripper. I had a cda and needed to turn it into a mp3. I found a few programs. The one I ended up using and liking is BulletProof Software's CD Ripper Grabber

LINUX COMMANDS FOR THE NOOB
here are a couple of new commands that I never tried and now love.

zip
if you want to zip the contents of the directory that you are in, and everything below, then this works hella well (where foo is the name of the zip file you want to create)
zip -r foo.zip *
zip -r foo.zip anotherdirectory

.bash_profile tricks
in your directory, do a ls -al and see if there is a .bash_profile (there is a period at the front). In here you can add some groovy stuff. I always add 2 things to mine. First, I hack the ls command to actually always do a ls -al since I prefer that to get all the detail in columns and the secret files etc. Next I want to make sure it is all in color. Second, I make a shortcut command so when I hit 'z' , I do a cd /var/lib.apache/htdoc you can make that path whatever you want but it is a nice time saver. Add these two lines to your .bash_profile and save
alias ls='ls --color -al'
alias z='cd /var/lib/apache/htdocs'

then exit and login. Try them out! Change the second one to a directory you find yourself always CDing to

so I had to move like 2 gigs of files from one box to the other. I had read about a recursive MGET ? anyone ever try this? It failed when I tried it. It would of been a slick way to ftp files if it had worked. Instead I got to practive my unix tarball skills. A tar in unix was origially something like a tape archive. It is a handy way to glue a buch of files together since it is easier to move one file than 1000 from box to box. Here are some of the tarball commands I fiddled with. Nothing earth shattering

tar -cf foo.tar mydirectory/

this makes a big honking foo.tar file of everything in the damn mydirectory. If there is a lot of stuff, it can take minutes to hours. You can also add a v to see what is going on

tar -cfv foo.tar mydirectory/

ok, and then you ftp that file and melt all the tar off with a

tar -xvf foo.tar

this worked very well and I will do it again

here is a little program that I use occasionally. If you have a pile of webpages or email or any document, you can fire this bad boy at the folder and SUCK every damn html link right out of the pile. Its a little handy tool. I am sure most of the programmers could write this some other way, but for a few bucks, this is a great link extractor
