I don't know about you, but I have a skip in my step this week. I feel so good that flames are shooting out of my ass! (I stold that line from Japanese fighter Kazushi Sakuraba) =) I just think the future looks bright. The elections are over, the sniper ha been caught, iraq is page 2, and christmas shopping is already at a fevered pace! More on my Christmas shopping thoughts below. I have a couple stories on the stove for next week. One is the yearly "beat box build". I am putting together a small, budget oriented XP box to do some testing on (yep, mpeg url popper testing) :) I'll take a few pics and give an inventory list with prices. Its about a $500 box. To make it a full server I would spend $900 on a few different parts. Now the second story is going to be a funny one but I don't know if it is going to come true so I don't want to let the human out of the bag just yet. I will say that you old old readers will pee your panties on this one since I think you will remember the story. Back in late 1997 and early 1998, there was an IA2000 convention in vegas and I stayed at the Monte Carlo and wrote about the adventure. A large financial newpaper found this story on google and found it both humorous and interesting. The paper interviewed me last week. My fingers are crossed that the story makes it to print. More on this if ot comes true.....I think everyone will get a good big belly laugh out of it. =)

Thank you to everyone who sent in more thoughts on the VISA 3rd party billing saga. Your thoughts are below.

Do you know I fried another monitor this week? And I fried my big one 3 weeks ago. I had this big dusty old 21" Viewsonic that I have blown up 3 times now. Fortunately the first two times were under warranty. Prices are so low now that it would most likely cost me $400 to repair with the high cost of shipping these heavy beasts...and so I decided to belly up to the bar and order a new 21" for $450
www.viewsonic.com/products/crt_p225fb.htm

I like Viewsonic since they get solid reviews and their factory is 30 minutes from my house, near Cal Poly Pomona. With the new 3 year warranty, I am fortunate that I can run down there if anything goes wrong.

enough banter, on with the show

STRONG SHOPPING CHRISTMAS PREDICTIONS
The wife went shopping in the so cal mall last week and at 4:30PM there was a line to eat. The foks went shopping in canada last weekend and it was packed. My half-life buddy "smell-my-fingers said that redmond WA shopping was on fire after the microsoft decision.

What am I saying? I am saying that this years christmas season is going to be BIG and I predict the stock market for the forth quarter will also be BIG.

here is a positive article for online christmas shopping

and one predicting strong online sales
www.forbes.com/markets/newswire/2002/10/23/rtr763356.html

every few months I like to give a few hot stock tips =)

LEGAL DISCLAIMER - take these tips with a bag of salt. I own these stocks. I cannot predict the future. Please consult with you attorney, tax advisor, broker, and pet psychic before dabbling in the high risk world of online trading.

With that out of the way, here are some stocks I like right now. The "women's clothing" sector has had a very nice year. Most of the time I don't like to wear women's clothing, but I still appreciate the profit numbers and stock growth =)

RE: VISA $750 from Dixie
Dixie writes
one of the big problems I had with the new Visa thing is that they want
your personal information directly. I used to have a merchant account and I
don't want that invasion of privacy again, ever. I was a single woman then
and having to provide my address, phone number, etc. to people subscribing to
the websites I ran was very uncomfortable. I did have some scary episodes
with horny guys tracking me down and I never want to feel that vulnerable
again. Visa wants all my information to be given to them directly, right
down the the URLs of my sites. No thanks. A huge reason for the switch I
made to a third-party biller is that I provide my information to the biller
and the biller handles the customers. I want some insulation from the
process, I want to just be able to run my sites and let someone else handle
billing, passwords, customer questions, etc. I don't want Visa getting my
information because then they are just one step away from giving it out. I
don't care what I lose in money, what I'm afraid of losing in privacy means
more to me. So, on my sites, I'll have a "click here for MasterCard" that
goes to my current third-party biller and another one for "click here for
Visa". It's not that hard.

It's odd, the fuss everyone is making about the 750.00 fee to
VISA...jesus christ, if you're business plan is that weak (for sudden

Too, though, you might have mentioned that CCBill is doing the cool
thing (for holding their customers -- and being competitive) by
repaying their webmasters the 750.00 reg. fee. Neat-o. Eh?

OVERTURE AND GOOGLE from Dan
Dan asks
I have a non porn site I am putting in the ppc search engines. Do you recommend google over goto? Would you use both or just stick with google? Let me know your feelings.

Andy writes
I just really like google...but let me give you some pros and cons. I think goto might have better overall traffic on some words...they seem to have higher counts in some of the porn words but I consider that a small advantage.

google has this

1. instant account creation
you can be up and running in minutes

2. daily budget
control the top amount you want to spend each day

3. excellent click rate
last week I was getting 1-2% and higher on some words in a test for porn

4. easy to repair when you break the terms of service
I broke a few rules that I was not clear on and some of my ads were frozen. They wrote me exactly what was wrong and I corrected it in minutes and was up and running again.

overature has

1. superb word suggestion tool
inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

I see it like this...google assumes that we are honest and then corrects violators later. I feel like overture assumes we are all crooks and makes everything be human reviewed before allowing it, and so things take a day to three days to get into the system. Each change has a long delay. There is nothing like buying adwords right now...and be off to the races.

both are good systems. I would say to try both and decide on your own. You might decide you like the features of overture better. I give both a thumb up but personally like the account creation and alteration speed of google adwords.

BUILDING MY FIRST PC from Allen
Allen writes
I want to buy, piece by piece (when i have the cash), parts to a pc. at
the end of of the parts being purchased, i'll have some local geek show
me how to put it together (i know there are sites that show this, but i
prefer seeing it done rather than reading about it...decreases the
chances of my hurling things out the apt window in fits of rage :)
anyhoo....keeping in mind that i'm hardware illiterate, here's my
question: how do i know that i'm buying parts that are compatible? i
mean...if i buy the top of the line motherboard, how do i know which top
of the line graphic card is going to play well with others? or
soundcard...or cd burner...etc? when i finally get all the components,
i'm going to be very anxious for everything to be put together and work,
so i'd like to minimize conflicts now when i'm buying.

Andy writes
BUILDER BUDDY
hee hee. It always helps on your first one having a builder buddy with you. There are a few snags and this helps make it all smooth :)

COMPATIBILITY
this is really one of the big keys to building your own computer. You want to make sure all the parts fit together and work together. Now video cards, and CDburners and things like that...those are hard to mess up and almost anyone works in anybox...just becareful of IDE vs SCSI drives...for your first box I would stick to IDE and avoid scsi for now. IDE is a little slower but is a lot cheaper and simpler. The real trick for compatibility is getting the motherboard, CPU and ram correct. Now it is easy to get the ram correct if you repeat after me "I promise to only buy my ram from Cruicial". Crucial kicks ass and their shopping cart is so great that you just put in your motherboard and then you will see all he choices that would work with it.
www.crucial.com

This leaves motherboard and CPU. One way you can be sure all the parts work together is to make up a big list and then call tech support or sales from the site you want to buy parts from and just ask them "do these aprts work together". The other thing is to check the motherboards website....it will list the mobo and then all the stuff that works with it and the CPU it is made for.

Let me make up and example with ASUS since I am most familiar with them. I will have to say that I still find it confusing with all the new CPU chips that are out these days! Now please note that some motherboards have sound, video, and LAN all built right in....that is a great choice for a 1U style box, but less fun if you want to pick lots of cool parts.

P4B
usa.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4b/overview.htm

they state right off the bat
supports the latest Intel® Pentium 4 478 Willamette / Northwood Processor, also known as P4, via a 478-pin surface mount ZIF socket.

some of the keys are max speed and pin count and name...keep those in mind. Here is one
smlnk.com/?42FA2HQQ

here is an example of the P4 ram page at crucial
smlnk.com/?45APW7MI

RECAP
Focus on compatibility of the Motherboard, CPU and ram. These are the most important parts and the least interexchangeable since there is AMD and Intel, and then both CPU makes have many different style of chips. Ram is not bad if you use Crucial. CDs, Floppies, Video Cards, Sounds Cards, and LAN cards almost all work with most system.

TO BE EXTRA SAFE
1. check out your shopping list with your buddy before you buy
2. save all receipts in case you have to return anything
3. you might post to the usenet group for the mobo manufacturer and ask readers if the parts are ok
4. you might call the store you are buying from and get them to double check
6. you might get a mag like MaximumPC and copy one of the systems that they design, word for word

PS
here are some great tips from Maximum PC on building a box

UPDATE - QUICKY XP BOX BUILD from AndyI decided I wanted to put together a cheap XP box since I need to do some testing on that OS and have no spare servers right now to run it on. I had a hard time decided on 1-2 year old motherboards and CPUs and probably could of done it for $350, but decided to spend a little more and get newer crud. I did not buy a HD or CD or floopy since I have them here. You can get a floppy for $15, CD $23, HD $80

board these first items at MWAVE
www.mwave.com
CPU......ASUS P4BGL-VM INTEL 478 PIN with VGA, LAN & AUDIO on board
CASE...IN-WIN S500/300 MID TOWER W/300W (PENTIUM 4 READY)
CPU.....INTEL CELERON 1.7 GHZ
OS.......XP PRO OEM

RAM..512MB CT6464Z265 512MB, 184-pin DIMM. for a ASUS P4BGL-VM
$165 ship tax shebang

this is not a high power system but not a bad little one. If it was to be a real server, I would of done the following

1U CASE and COOL JAG 1U FAN $225 + $25
1000 mb RAM ..another $153
INTEL 509b LAN card $50
P4 CPU a few more bucks

interesting site. I think they have just written some kind of a spider that spiders a lot of popular adult sites. I downloaded some of the files and they open in excel and then list all the jpgs that were spidered on that site. I am not sure what CSV stands for but it is a comma delimited file. I would not be too concermed about the site. Hey! I just found it...CSV stands for comma-separated value

VPN - VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORKS from Dan
Dan writes
I tried a product today that I thought I'd let
you know about... I don't know whether you'd want to publish this, but it
sure solved a big problem I had!

I am opening a new office for my company in Louisiana, and am keeping my
office in Nevada open as well. I was looking for information on how to set
up a VPN to keep the offices in communication. I need to be able to access
my Nevada network in Louisiana. I kept running into brick walls. Nobody
seemed to have a turn-key solution and setting up my own VPN seemed to be
prohibitively expensive and complicated.

Well, today I got a spam email advertising "Access your PC from anywhere!"
It reminded me of the old PC Anywhere software that used to let you dial up
other PCs via modem and control their desktops... it worked but was
ssssssslllllllooooooowwwwww...

Anyway, I went to the website being advertised
www.gotomypc.com

I didn't use the link in the email because I
hate spam and didn't want the sender to get any affiliate sale -- and
checked them out.

Basically, you install a "service" on the host PC (the one you want to
remotely access) that listens for a remote request... You log on to
gotomypc.com in order to access your remote computer. All this is done with
128 bit encryption. On the client PC (the PC you are using to access the
host PC), you also have to install a client application. It's supposed to
work with firewalls, etc. and my ZoneAlarm (running on client and host) has
no problems with it.

Once you're connected, you can see the desktop of the host computer and
control it completely. You can print stuff from the host computer to the
client PC's printer, transfer files, etc. You can run applications, check
email, do whatever you want exactly as if you were sitting in front of the
host PC. If both host and client have decent internet connections, like DSL
or cable, the speed is pretty good.

There is a monthly fee (or annual fee) to do this, based on the number of
computers you have set up as hosts. I have three host PCs set up for about
$400 per year.

This is way cheaper than setting up your own VPN and also has a lot more
functionality. Definitely worth the $400/year to me... it's actually a
lifesaver!
