3 Busy Guy Plumbing, we're
busy busy busy...
If you have been living under the rock, you might of missed the news
on 3rd party billing and the shakeup. It has been chatted about from
here to Timbuktu. Visa is putting the clampdown on 3rd party. Huge fees...high
enough to make you just want to get a merchant account instead. Many
of you wrote in with comments and I have added them throughout the newsletter.
Feel free to email me if you want to add some comments too. Several
folks wrote in with new ideas on the visual confirmation to brute force
attacks. Craig the Programmer even buzzed in with a doctoral thesis
on the subject which is great reading.
There were a couple of side
stories that made news this week in this top section....one again on
the very odd world of non nude underage sites. This is a powder keg.
There is also the story on the web escort prostitution trial.
Let's start of with Craig
and Lar who broke the 3rd party billing story to me the day it hit the
airwaves...

LEGENDARY LARS AND I DEBATE
THE 3RD PARTY NEWS ON ICQ
lars
yeah lemme send you the message its huge news
A.D.
holy fucking fees! this seems evil by visa...they are milking porn...this
will hurt a lot of sites...that is $1000
lars
10/2/200 12:08 PM yeah a ton of the small guys just got wiped out !!!
A.D.
10/2/200 12:08 PM no MC logo on site...
A.D.
10/2/200 12:09 PM yep...the weaker newer small guy...these fees
are now as high as getting your own merchant
account
lars
10/2/200 12:10 PM yeah ya might as well get your own..since its basically
the same rules. each customer is in effect getting the once over by
visa...I am gonna drop all my 3rd party accounts..the small guys were
helping the big guys with chargeback softening..I think this might spell
death for 3rd party and I think big webmasters are gonna get stuck holing
the bag as they wont get paid their reserves
A.D.
lots of little guys aren't going to have the cash to pay these fees....this
will hurt 3rd party for sure
lars
I think it might kill 3rd party and from what we have seen before when
they go down they dont pay anyone..any of their reserves or any $'s
for the last few weeks of processing....I think all it will do is make
people get their own merchant accounts and drop the 3rd party guys....yup
tightens the ship a bit more industry is shrinking and consolidating..in
tgp and in paysites..The main thing that concerns me is that due to
the big ammounts of people who will bail. This could cause 3rd party
chargeback ratios to go way up. They are based on previous months chargebacks
vs this months take.. if the take goes way down but chargebacks stay
the same which they should 3rd party merchant accounts are in jepordy.
Legendary Lars adds
OK this billing shit is so fucking scary. Major fuckage. The story is
between the lines and Chargback ratios and getting blacklisted for 1
url on all your accounts. Mega big bummer..
www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=80347
lars
the biggest Issue I see is lets say visa takes offense at one of your
50 urls you own.. Just 1 out of 50 they shut the whole fucking company
down for thatone url. and there is no rules for what they deem appropriate
or not. So does everyone just have 1 url and drop the othe 49 sites
? or rick the bigger sites with urls that dont make as much money.
lars
Chargeback % is based on current months income. If the 3rd party guys
income drops due to tons of small players exiting the system then the
chargeback % for 3rd party guys will go up ! If it goes up too much
they could loose their accounts. I would not be surprised to see 1 of
the big 4 3rd party playes go under in the next 6 months
A.D.
why does it go up losing little guys...is their ratio lower?...or because
they are newer?
lars
if you loose the little guys and sales declines even say 10%. then your
chargebacks from previous months are compared to this months sales.
so the % is greater cuzz your doing less sales

RE: THIRD PARTY AND VISA
from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
For me personally this doesn't give me too much concern since I don't
do any
credit card billing myself. And assuming paypal doesn't stick it to
me I
should be fine. I've already heard though some billing companies are
willing to absorb the costs for users as a means of gaining webmasters
from
their competition. It will be really interesting how this all unfolds.
To
be honest my main concern isn't this change, but what will come in the
future? Whose to say $750 is enough now for Visa to set aside it's Morality
issuues? Although I think that although some good will come out of this,
I
think more problems will arise out of it. What if Johnny sponsor happens
to
have a bad month and still gets too many chargebacks...they get that
url
shutdown from accepting CCs? Now webmasters will not only need to worry
about conversions and if they'll get paid...but if the sites they're
promoting can still take memberships.

NEW THIRD PARTY BILLERS from
Peter
Peter writes
In the same week I got announcements of Cyberage and Adultcheck that
they
are going into the bussiness of third party creditcard processing. Direct
competition for Ibill and CCbill:
www.clearcard.com
www.acpay.com
I think this is great news
for smaller paysite owners. Why? because both
sites are going to list all the reseller programs. So the small paysite
will
get access to thousands of cyberage and adultcheck webmasters without
any
costs. Also a reseller does not want to sign up with 20 different smaller
sites. He does not want to receive 20+ $50-$100 checks every month .
He does
not want to check 20+ different stats pages. That is why the big boys
have
so many niche sites. With only one stats page and one or two big checks
a
month a small paysite is attractive for a reseller. That is what clearcard
and acpay seem to provide.

UNDERAGE AND SELLING THEIR
SEXUALITY ON THE WEB from sign_bldr
If there was ever a taboo topic, this has to be it. This is the bizarro
world of non nude, underage websites. You've seen pictures on TV of
Jon Bonet Ramsey. Sign_bldr sent in this great story that asks so many
questions. Does a 13 year old have the right to be sexy? Does a 50 year
old have the right to fantasize about that 13 year old? At what point
is the line crossed? Do bikinis cross the line of nudity? Are one families
baby pictures, another man's child porn?

RE: BRUTE FORCE ATTACK SOLUTION
FROM LAST WEEK from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
<snip>
Then I remembered something I had been seeing none adult sites doing,
such
as yahoo, ebay and others, on their login pages they display a picture
with
a word or a set of numbers. The person logging in has to enter what
they see
and if they don't they can't login even with the correct password.
</snip>
The problem most adult sites
have is not people getting access to the site
(everyone should be using some form of membership protection program
anyways). The big issue is the brute force attacks themselves.
Here's what normally will
happen:
Johnny finds a website he
wants to brute force
Johnny starts up his proxy using autologin thingamagig
Johnny hammers the site (sometimes 100+ simultaneous connections) trying
to
find a useable username/password
Johnny keeps hammering the site until he tires of it, the site stops
responding or he decides to start on another site.
Even if username/passwords
are collected, most people will keep using the
basher to get as many active combinations as they can.
While Stephen's idea would
pretty much remove the problem of submitters
finding a useable username password (which is just as easy to prevent
by
merely enforcing some strict username and password guidelines). It doesn't
stop the real problem of the submitter itself...as far as the submitter
is
concerned....that username/password combination was unsuccessful so
it tries
again.
People no longer have issues
with people who manage to get a working
username/password from these programs. Although it is annoying it's
not
half as damaging as the brute force attack itself. IIRC most network
cards
can only handle about 1024 simultaneous connections to the card itself,
regardless of the bandwidth usage (I could be off on this but I know
without
tweaking there is some form of hardware limit). And most sites I know
use a
lot less. For example without tweaking Apache at all, unix machines
can
only have 256 simultaneous connections on an Apache server. If Johnny
is
hitting you with 100+ login processes per second it not only consumes
much
more memory and cpu power (apache has to log all the errors as well
as
receive the connections, send response, check against the username/password
database etc) but it cripples how many legit people can be accessing
the
site at one time. And don't forget. 1 connection is not necessarily
just
one person. Most browsers open multiple connections to the site when
being
accessed (ex. 1 connection to get HTML, then a few more to get simultaneous
images the HTML needs, etc). So with only 156 available processes you're
limited to maybe about 30 people active on the server to have it still
run
at a decent speed and people not to get errors. And then what happens
if
there are multiple people hitting you with brute force programs. Unless
you
have a fairly beefed up machine capable of handling it...you can kiss
your
site's connectivity goodbye.
<snip>
This effectively blocks 100% of brute force methods because a human
can see
a word or a set of numbers in a picture that would be impossible (at
least
now) for a computer program to parse. The picture is generated randomly
on
the fly and is different for each login attempt.
</snip>
Once again this is the wrong
perspective to be looking at. What one needs
to do is come up with a way to have the brute force program give up
and go
to another site (besides having the user cancel it or the brute force
program runs out of combinations of username/passwords to use). The
username/password problem can be easily solved with a login protection
program like Pennywize. It's the DoS (denial of service) caused by brute
force programs and the strain on the server keeping up with all the
requests
that is the real concern.
There's a thread at adultwebmasterinfo.com
that just started up regarding
this. One of the webmasters there is trying out a new technique to try
to
discourage some brute force programs. It's not without flaws but it
may
deter the occasional bad guy, some programs will look right through
this but
it's crafty nonetheless

RE: BRUTE FORCE ATTACKS from
Stefan
To avoid a brute force DOS attack. A possible solution is to incorperate
a "brute force detection" on your system that's detects more
than - let's say 3 login pr/min - it executes a iptables that's limits
the access for the attackers ip adress.
Ex.: it executes:
iptables -A INPUT -m limit --limit 1/min -p tcp --destination-port 80
-j
accept -s 192.68.2.1
Where 192.68.2.1 is the attackers
IP address and 1/min says that IP address mus only get one connection
to your localport 80 (your webserver) per minute. This requeries that
your are running *nix with iptables and have root access. (btw: I havent
checked it out - but I should work in the theory - but check man iptables')

andy writes
I am a little out of the loop on engine spamming but here are some thoughts.
There are also some great sites like PlanetOcean that make it their
job to heavily research how to get into each engine.
No.1
I have said this before, and I will say it again...NEVER use an engine
marketing service. You will either get banned from the engines, or lose
money. Now once again I am exaggerating a little since there probably
has to exist some honest one out there. It just doesn't makes sense
to me economically. If I was a pro at spamming engines, why would I
take your money to promote you site when I can just get a zillion domains
and spam the engines with my own stuff? Well there can only be two reasons
a) I charger more than I make (just like traffic) and therefore, it
will be very hard for you to make what you pay and b) My service is
not that good but people don't know. I have never ever never ever received
an email in 5 years saying "boy, XYZ search engine submission service
is KICK ASS". Instead I get "boy, XYZ submission service got
be banned on all the engines and took my money and are charlatans."
If you are going to spam engines, do it yourself.
No.2
Every engine is different. What works for Alta Vista probably does not
work for Google.
No.3
Only the big engines count. At least in the beginning, focus on the
big engines since they account for 90% of traffic. Google is the big
game and hardest to spam.
No.4
Automation? I used to believe in submission scripts. Now they just don't
work that well since the big engines put caps on the amount of urls
you do each day OR they blacklist you when they see you hammering away
from one domain.
No.5
So how do you make a page that does well? Here is my old technique and
I believe it holds up today. Go to google and look up some words. I
tend to prefer double words since there is less competition. Here is
a triple word since it is easier to show
big big tits
www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&q=big+big+tits
most of those results are
spam pages. Spamming google is tough. You have to do it subversively
and it is expensive. Notice these peple have spammed one page on one
domain. That takes time and engergy and money. You might need 1000 domains....risky.
I take those pages and do
these things
1. count the page size
2. word count
3. key words count
4. picture count
5. length of keyword line and keyword count in subject line
I try to make a page just
like these ones mathematically. example
if it was 275k, 523 words, 4 keywords, and 3 pics, 10 word title with
one keyword, then that is how I would make my page. Some people believe
in meta tags, I have never put much faith in them. If I found them on
the page, I would probably try and duplicate their counts but don't
lose sleep on meta tags.
To summarize this apprach
1. find a high rank paged that you can copy the math of
2. buy several domains...maybe 10 to start
3. develope the mini site on that domain
4. submit it
--
Now you can try and make just pages from your one domain on google.
This is trickier and riskier. The pages better not look like "doors"
at all or you will be banner or heavily penalized. If you do make several
pages at google....every page should be very different. One thing we
have talked a lot about here is BLOGS. blogs are an interesting way
to spam a search engine since you babble in your blog each day, and
if you uses one that stores pages statically and not dynamically, your
pages get picked up by the engines and act as content doors.
--
Google also rewards sites that get linked to. If you can take all your
domains and link to each other, this helps ranking.
--
Some folks use spider traps. I am not sure how well these work. I thend
to think they work on google but I don't know. You can submit one page
to the url and then on that page, have links to all your other pages.
I used to try this on the old engines and it never seemed to work very
well.
--
If it were me, I think the bloggy content approach seems to work best
and keeps people out of trouble. I babble all day in sexswap news and
in my cobra site, and I find the oddest pages from my sites coming up
on google for odd words and funny business. If you could write I to
two pages a day...maybe a paragraph, with intteresting words, at the
end of the year you would have 400 pages in google, pulling to your
site. The other approach is lots of domains. I think some people are
still successfull at spamming engines, but the hay days are over and
it is more money and work now. Check out planet ocean for more detailed
advice.

BROWSER PLAIN WORD TYPE INS
from Jim
Jim writes
Do you remember Real Names?
www.realnames.com/
They were the ones who had a deal with M$ to sell plain words that would
work in the address window of M$IE.
Anyway I have been cold called by a few people from different companies
I have never heard of selling these key words.
www.igetnet.com
www.miraitx.com
The big difference is that they will sell generic words where realnames.com
would not - making real names somewhat useless unless you already have
good branding and name recognition.
One of these companies actually told me that I needed to download a
M$ plug in to make it work. They had a place right on their site where
you could download the special "M$" plug in. They even used
the M$ logo on the d/l link but when you started the download it popped
up the warning window asking if you wanted to download and run software,
etc. but it was not digitally signed by M$. That made me suspicious
so I told the sales geek that if he could show me where I could d/l
this plug-in from the M$ site I would gladly buy some generic key words,
otherwise I told him that I did not believe him.
Another company, www.miraitx.com, told me that their special
.dll file was loaded onto people's computers with other types of programs
without them even knowing. That does not sound very ethical to me -
in fact it sounds like some form of scum-ware or spy-ware. They tell
me that there are many million people with this .dll and that they estimate
that by Jan 1-03 there will be some ungodly millions more. I was surprised
to find that I already had the special .dll on my computer, which is
strange considering I do not install just any crappy free software on
my computer.
See if you have it... type
the word "books" into the address window of your msie browser.
where did it go?
Now try "sports"
Mine goes to barns and noble and yahoo sports. This makes them appear
to have some big name clients but they could make these words go anywhere
just to make them look big.
Have you heard of this stuff before? Do you know of anyone who has bought
any of these words before. I smell a rat but would not want to miss
out on buying some generic key words if this shit is real!

In my opinion, this is just one of the many forms of browser hyjacking.

Some WM's have found the truth about this VISA shit: And that is that

the US, now, the 3 stooges have grown comfortably not developing banking
relationships with other parts of the world, in other words, they only
have US accounts, while other IPSP's do, they didn't do their homework,
this is overconfidence. In other words: The visa shit only applies to
USA not the world, other IPSP's have bank relations in other countries
and are not affected, read this:
<GloBill quote>
"The new Visa rules in particular are directed against "aggregators"
which specifically means companies such as ours in the third-party industry.
The new rules are slated to come into effect very shortly within the
US. These rules would make the third-party model prohibitively expensive
for the industry. It would essentially be rendered impractical. Some
billing companies such as Lancelot have decided to shut down rather
than continue under the Visa/Mastercard regime. However, not all regions
of the world come under the new rules. The merchant banking industry
is broken up into different regions such as North America, Europe, Asia
etc. Each region can decide to opt in or opt out. While the US region
has opted in, other regions have opted out. GloBill has decided to run
its business with reputable banks in the opt-out regions. Not all billing
companies have the capital, know how or foresight to set up merchant
accounts with these particular banks and that is why I foresee some
of these companies going under over the next few months. With this move,
GloBill feels it will emerge as one of the most stable companies in
the industry.
</GloBill quote>
It sounds to me like the
big 3 are trying to make us believe that this is a Visa International
decision that all regions must follow, when in fact it is actually just
a Visa USA decision.

sounds like the perfect ticket. No BS feature, just bare bones. I have
to try it soon.

I ate my Hat for Ken from Hustler (webquest/cashquest) cause they sent
$5k to my favorite charity. Hustler (cashquest/webquest) deserves a
little exposure/credit for that donation.

UPDATE ON GRAIG THE PROGRAMMER'S
'TGPWIZARDS'
Craig's TGP posting site is really smoking along. The days of alpha
testing are long gone and I think he's well into the betas. Currently
the site posts to 123 TGPs and 18 TGP2s. It is one slick system. It
takes a few tries to get used to all the advanced features, but once
you get the hang, it is a real TGP posting time saver. The entire site
is all php and mysql and hella slick. Check it out
