Hello out there, we're on the air. I need some damn coffee. My head hurts and I am not even hung over. Hey, do you remember that classis song by "The Cramps". Were they considered punk? The songs were sort of Ramonish. I always enjoy singing "Let's get f*cked up" =) Here it is! From the "FlameJob" album..a college obscure classic smlnk.com/?XBV41UR1and here is the groovy cover smlnk.com/?LCEL5YOD My favorite like is "in the morning we'll feel like we got hit by a truck!...let's get f*cked up" ..because I think most mornings I feel like that truck did hit me...at least until I have inhaled that pot O starbucks.

Let me see what's in store today. Again, tons of newslinks...which one catches my eye.....oh ya! I love the story this week on the scientific mind that cracked the zillion dollar uncrackable Sony CDs. This guy use all his super power skill to show the corporation that there engineers could be beat. Did he use laser beams? NO! Did he use a scientific algorythm with pi to root 17? NO! He use a black sharpie marks-a-lot and scribbled around the edge of the CD ...hee hee haaa.

Some fun trix this week: link popularity revisited, thoughts on stickiness, text links and banner links, pre paid adult cars hit the scene, comments on brute force tools, and more. I also have a banner test I did a couple days a go, and show the results.

enough banter, on with the show

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

JUST DID A WEIRD BANNER TEST
I took a banner for one of my sponsors and I distorted it 3 additional ways. The banner was a simple banner with a picture and some words...non animated. I had 4 banners at the end. I made one greyscale, one bright glowing colors, one dim colors, and left the original alone. I thought the bright articficially bright one would win. I am not concerned with percents in such a test but more the relative strength of the results to each other.

trix.sexswap.com/banner_testing/nocheat/

Dim banner
Number of times ad was shown: 3307 Clicked: 6 Ratio: 0.18%
Default banner
Number of times ad was shown: 3270 Clicked: 12 Ratio: 0.37%
Bright banner
Number of times ad was shown: 3265 Clicked: 3 Ratio: 0.09%
Black and White banner
Number of times ad was shown: 3274 Clicked: 7 Ratio: 0.21%

The banner I thought would win, came last!...and this is why I test =) I was a little disappointed I could not improve on the default and was suprised at the results.

From here I took the banner I was already using (a banner not tested) and wanted to see how it did against the group...this was a different banner with different picture

Old banner
Number of times ad was shown: 2592 Clicked: 2 Ratio: 0.08%

holy smokes batman...time to swap in test banner number 2. I love the internet for just this type of testing and it is easy to do once a week or more. The subtlest things affect banner click rates.

Here is a tip to PAY SITE COMPANIES that run affiliate programs. Why don't you TEST your banners...at least once a month and then PUBLISH THE RESULTS ...so your affiliates can see what banners are working best and then...they will USE the best banners and you BOTH will make moer money.

I don't think I have ever going to any affiliate site and seen this type of thing. This is like money in the bank for everyone! Some banners just fucking suck! I suggest you test them and tell your affiliates which ones work. It is not that hard if you get a lot of traffic and you can then see.

This gives me a new idea for revenuw :) The wheels are spinning in Shylock's head....I need to talk to Dangerous Dan ...could this be a possible SexSwap future service? $200 for 5 banners tested at 5000 showings each and we aim the traffic at your site and then issue a report which you can use to show your affilaites which could be huge since you can see above that you can TRIPLE your income by using the proper best banner....yes yes. Let me sleep on this idea :)

GURU-O-GIF IS A CPM HYPOCRIT from Kris
Kris sent me and email and tore a strip off my hyde =) He says that on one side of my mouth I am saying that CPM rates were all way too high, and out of the other side of my lips I am secretly asking for $56cpm!!!! He may be right...you tell me. Here is the story

Kris writes
Whoa there Andy. Are you serious? After five paragraphs talking about how
sticky is worthless because CPM sucks and porn guys have never and will
never touch it, you go on to say that you are selling banner space on a
page that gets about 3200-4000 hits a month for $225!? And then you say
you think that's fair? Even if you get 4000 hits per month, that is still
selling banner space at a whopping $56.25 CPM!

Andy writes
hee hee hee. What a hypocrit I am! =) Now hold onto your panties their Kris

1. Trix gets 4000 UNIQUES a month
let's do the math governor...most people who go to the archives, see the main page at least 3 times since it is the launch point to th archives and people constantly search the archives.

3 x 4000 = 12,000 ram

$225 / 12000 = $18.75 CPM not $56 but $19 is still high

2. CPM has no controls
the game quickly became....how can I show this banner a zillion times. This is why CPM dies. bulletin boards and pop ups and every trick under the sun was used to show the banners endlessly.

3. Our pricing is inline with adult webmaster portals. It is even a BETTER deal since we sell 2 and only 2 spots
We based our pricing on what other portals are charging. AND ...there are no other ads on this page...there will only be 2 ads. Home many banners do you see here...I see about 10 and I bet placement is also sold
www.ynotmasters.com

how about here...10 mini banners
chat.amateurmasters.com/public/ThreadList.cgi

and how about 6 banners
www.gofuckyourself.com/

and how about 14 banners...all shapes and sizes
www.theadultwebmaster.com/

we have NO MINI BANNERS
we have NO TEN SPOTS
we have ONLY TWO SLOTS

and so your chances of getting traffic are significatnly higher.

4. What does a program need to make money at this?
$225 ...how many sign-ups does a program need? It all depends on what the average webmaster brings them over the life of a program. If the average adult webmaster who joins, brings an affiliate one sign-up a week, and a sign-up nets $20, then the program would need
$225 (cost) / (4 weeks X $20 net) = 2.81 or 3

If these estimates are close, then someone buying that ad needs about 3 webmaster signups from it to break even. I have no idea if these numbers are accurate. Perhaps the average webmaster signup is weaker....perhaps the average webmaster is worth more over his lifespan. We basically based our initial pricing on what other boards are charging. This is not a CPM model. This is a monthly ad rate. The two are different. With an CPM model, the goal is to show the banner to infinity in order to milk the sponsor...this is why CPM is bullshit.

Do I know if our prices are fair? Nope. I won't know for a few months. Perhaps they are too high...maybe too low. We will know in time by working with buyers and adjusting prices accordingly.

>I know you said you would adjust for your market but I think you should
>start now because I would be shocked if anyone in porn were dumb enough
>not to put 2 and 2 together and realize they are getting ripped off. Maybe
>you can sell the space to Yahoo.

heee hee hee. this may be true =)

Kris writes
Also, I understand that if you make more than you spend its a deal but I
someone has got to spend that amount first. Anyway, I would love to see
the market you surveyed that said that would be a fair price. I will sell
them all sorts of advertising for only half that =)
Well, I just had to say something about that. Good luck in your sales

Dangerous Dan writes
hehehe .... $200 is not that much .... that type of advertising is not one where you absolutely need to make your money back ... we buy a lot of that ... one HUGE factoris the ''exposure'' and how you make new people realize who your are by seeing your banner everywhere ... that's also worth something .... (I know this because we buy a lot of ads where we don't make our money back, but we believe that, in the end, it's worthed because people end up knowing Gamma .... of, course, we have to make sure not to lose too much ...:)

Andy writes
let me know what you think the market will bear....got an adult portal? What do you charge for ad space? Email me and I will publish your comments...AND think of it as an easy free plug for you ads =) Let people know what spots are selling for.

Sleazy Dream writes
edditing error in the last sexswap - you go on about how shitty banners are and then in the next paragraph try to sell banners on sexswap. I almost fell off my chair laughing....hehehehehehehehehehe. bitch early in the letter - sell later... not RIGHT AFTER one another....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

HELLA HYPOCRIT DECIDES TO RETRACT BANNER SALES
After reading Kris's email and thinking more about it...I decided that for $400 a month...selling those two banner might be more hastle than its worth =) I have decided not to sell those slots. Instead, I plan to promote the Nasty lads yet another time with their $100 per active webmaster sign-up program. I think this approach is simpler, less work, less hypocritcal, and less headaches. I apologize to those folks who wrote in and asked about buying the ads. I hope to use long copy and text links. I hope you don't mind me backtracking a little...I was starting to feel like a used car salesman and had to de-grease for selling too hard. One thing I try to minimize in life..is hypocracy...and clearly, last week I was looking HELLA HIPPOCRATIC =) after bitching about Yahoo and then saying "by the way, let me sell some banners". I apologize for my foolishness and hope to regain your trust :) Please feel free to blast me....it is funny as Sleazy pointed out 8^)

ah...the lessons of life.

STICKINESS IS GOOD ON PAYSITES from Kal
Kal writes
Andy I know you just expounded that stickyness is overrated in the last
newsletter, but I am very close to getting done a paysite I have worked
hard on, and have thought hard and long on how in hell can I get people to
let their credit card get rebilled month after month.

Andy writes
this is very true...and I agree...with my stickiness banter, I am referring more to free sites and sites that make money on advertising clicks....paysites certainly want to be sticky.

Kal writes
Would it be possible to do a piece in the next news letter on your theories of designing the inside of a site?

Andy writes
My only theory again would be TEST...I don't think anyone knows what banners work best, or what front ends work best or what back-ends work best. I always believe it building sites several different ways and then see WHAT layout gets the better retention. I used to think it might be hard to test a paysite backend since it would take months. This was actually faulty logic. Really, if you run a 3 day trial....you can test a back-end (the inside of a paysite), in 3-7 days. Simply track the conversion of you 3 day customers to monthly. If BACK-END A is getting 23% of people to go from trial to monthly, and BACK-END B gets 27% of trial buyers to go from trial to monthly, I tend to think B is a better back-end and will make more money in the long run. This is not a perfect test, but is better than nothing.

IS THE INTERNET ECONOMY DEAD? from Mom
Here is an interesting article from a canadian newspaper. I am not sure the author's point, but clearly at the start of the article, his head is so far up his ass he can't see. Flames immidiately shot from my nose when I read " It turns out that consumers actually liked the old-fashioned way of doing things: of looking the seller in the eye as you haggled over terms; of kicking the tires; of squeezing the Charmin. And now those cracks seem to be beyond repair."

This shows that he is clueless and does not even use the internet. One thing I find after talking with Bruce and Jock, my canadian friends who visited, is that there is a big lag between canada and usa. RIght now they are still seeing bi compaines fail for internet. There seems to be a 1-2 year lag. Everything we went through 1-2 years ago they are experiencing now. They were also behind in the boom. I think this is where the author's perspective is and I remember such BS stories when the bubble burst.

RE: LINK POPULARITY CHECKER ODDITIES from Kris
marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm

Kris writes
I just thought this was interesting and I wanted to see if you knew anything about it. I just went to the page you wrote about below and I checked up on a couple websites and I just wanted to give youa report on my experience. I am developing a lotto website so the first thing I checked were three descently popular lotto sites.

Then I decided to add a forth site to the list. The forth site is one that I am still developing but I wanted to see if it had somehow leaked out as there are live pages up on the web ibehind secret URLs. The first thing I noticed is that the first three sites I looked up the first time had changed their rankings in accordance with each other. THe site that was on bottom the first time I checked it had now moved to the top.

THen I noticed that there were anywhere from 1 to 3 links back to my site so I checked on the first search engine to display where they were coming from. THe search engine was alltheweb.com. When I got there I found something really interesting. One of the links was a post on geekvillage.com that I replied to a few weeks ago. The weird thing is that I didn't make any reference to my website at all. Its not in my signiture and geekvillage knows nothing about the website. I checked everyone elses posts and no one else had mentioned it either.

Somehow though, Alltheweb has found a link on that page. THis would not be quite as weird if I had not replied to that post personally. Its like they somehow linked me with my website. I have 15 other posts on that website though and it didn't find any of those. Do you have any idea how or why this happened? I'd certainly be interested in any theories.

Andy writes
my only guess would be that alltheweb search whois? Does anyone have any other ideas on this? email andy@lips.com

Kris writes
However, a few months ago I was expecting it to open soon so I placed a
link to it on one of my old websites that gets about 15 visits per day. I
wanted to have it listed with the major search engines when the site
opened instead of having to wait so I placed it there expecting it to be
spidered. It was and now almost every search engine has a record of the
site.

SITES WHERE STICKINESS IS IMPORTANT from Jerry
Jerry writes
Just read your latest news letter and thought I'd comment on stickiness.
One kind a site where stickiness is good are paysites. Paysites want to
keep their members coming back month after month. But last time I checked
most paysites averaged 2-3 month retention. Bad stickiness... Preimum
AVSes seem to do better at 4-8 months.

Another kind of sticky site which is making bank are the big tgps like The
Hun and AL4A. The Hun sells ads and links and probably does $1k-$2k/day
from webmasters who want access to his traffic.

BANNERS AND TEXT LINKS from Ken
Ken writes
I have found that it is much easer to get other sites to place banners than
it is to get them to do text links so I tried develop banners that resemble
text links and have had a great response

This month I have had a banner up with 165,530 banner displays and have
received a 4% click though rate which I'm sure you will agree that is
OUTSTANDING. And I have found that has been a great way to improve banner
displays.

I tried to get banners to work for months with no luck when I started making
banners with 3 to 10 words and a transparent background I struck it big.
I am not a veteran in the biz and have only been trying to generating
traffic for about 6 months now but I am sure this is good advise for anyone
that has a large inventory of banners ads and is trying to utilize them to
there best potential

THOUGHTS ON STICKINESS from Gerry
Gerry writes
In the real world, stickiness is a good thing. If you have a store
you want to get repeat customers that come back again and again
to spend money and buy something.

In the upside down world of internet, stickiness is a bad thing because
everything is given away for free. Every repeat visit, instead of
making you money, costs you money.

Free works OK for television because the cost of transmitting a signal
is fixed and each additional viewer doesn't add to you cost. On the
internet, each additional viewer adds an incremental cost to you.

Now I have been using Yahoo for years, checking stock quotes 80 times
a day, with 27 free email accounts, getting directions from maps.yahoo.com
everyday. Yahoo has have never made one cent off of me. Their advertisers
have never made one cent off me. In about seven years I have never clicked
on a single banner on Yahoo, not even once.

However, I think over time the internet may get more like the real world
where everyone knows that if you go into a store for some service, you
got to pay. Some day I expect to be paying for stock quotes and email
accounts and maybe then stickiness will be good.

COMMENTS ON LAST WEEK'S BRUTE FORCE TOOL from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
I noticed a little plug last week mentioned an anti brute force tool...there
were no demonstrations of it or any URLs where I could see this in action
however taking a look at the screenshots

Shot #1: www.paysitepowertools.com/images/ss-memlogin-login.jpg

The example here was a basic authentication page...you know the typical
popup box requesting a username and password. They said this method was
adored by brute force hackers since they knew what the member's url was.

Shot $2: www.paysitepowertools.com/images/ss-memlogin-newlogin.jpg

The *new* loging method is via a cgi script it seems. They said this method
hides the member url making it impossible for bruteforce hackers to hack
into the site.

All I have to say is how is this more secure?

Not knowing exactly how this works I anticipate it works the following way.

Person enters username/password and submits it to a cgi script
CGI script verifies user/pass combination, and if valid redirects user to
the member's url.

From Kaz mentioning that there's no way around it short of faking the
referring url, so I assume the script also takes the referring URL into
consideration when the form is submitted.

Although this may prevent a few potential force hacking programs the
majority of them would already get around this....first off the referring
url is incredibly easy to fake, when using CGI script hacking, most programs
do this already....plus there is a URL that can be used to hack, as all the
information is posted to a CGI script you would send the user/name password
forces into this script until you got a working combination.

I could code a brute force hacking script for this method of security in a
matter of minutes, and I know of at least two underground hacking programs
that can handle CGI based logins already(and I'm sure since this is becoming
more popular, more of the programs support this now too).

Your thoughts? email andy@lips.com for next weeks letter

DIGITAL MILLENIUM COPYRIGHT NOTICE HORROR STORY from Stel
Stel writes
Hows this for a story? Anyone else get Digitial Millenium Copyright Act
take down notice? Read my bitch about the whole process below.

Wow what an amazingly app email from your gripe line. TAMPABAYADULT.NET
which has been the ISP I have owned and operated as an independent for the
last 8 years recently had its first encounter with the Digital Millenium
Copyright Act (DMCA) for the 1st time ever. One of our web-hosted
customers, a website that indulges in parody's of other websites, parodied
a another website that took exception. The other website rather than first
contact our customer or as a fallback contact us conerning the issue
instead invoked the DMCA against both my customer, our company and our
upstream Tier 1 Provider of our bandwidth. The DMCA clause invoked was for
copyright infringement against the parody website.

www.loc.gov/copyright/legislation/dmca.pdf

The DMCA requires NO lawyers initially, no police, no courts and if parties
wish to protect themselves from litigation then they must act preciptiously
and with no care for 1st Amendment Rights or whether the charge is right or
wrong.

www.ala.org/washoff/osp.html

Unfortunately for us all our staff were in the field last Thursday May 9th
until around 11:15pm EST servicing customers including myself. Since our
upstream Tier 1 Provider follows a the course of actionn allowed by the
DMCA to protect ones legal liability the attempted to reach us for a "take
down" order against the website. After 6 hours with non communication with
us their only option was a null route of the website but since we use
Virtual Hosting as opposed to individual IP Hosting (very deprecated now
considering ICANN's very harsh IP verification rules) they had to null
route the particular IP Address of the Web Server that the site was hosted
on. The result not only did the site go off the air but 30 other inncocent
web hosted customers of hours for 7 hours until I personally got in touch
with our Tier 1 Upstream Provider.

I was flabbergasted. What happened to probable cause? A warrant? A court
injunction? It was like living in the old Soviet Union or Nazi Germany.
They basically busted my door down, shot everyone on site, left, and then
left a note "Hey sorry if this was the wrong house but the law is the law."

I had to form my own DMCA response in the correct Venacular to reinstate
our connection and I was forced to shut down our customers site till they
sent me a DMCA response. They spent 24 hours off the air.

I have never been the recipient of a DMCA take down order before in 7
years. It was a shocking abuse of the 1st Amendment without any legal
recourse to a fiat termination. According to my Tier 1 Provider they do it
all the time the last few years. I had followed the Electronic Frontier
Foundations (EFF) www.eff.org/IP/DMCA/ fight against various DMCA
abuses in the encyrption area and against 2600 Magazine but I had never
realized its impact on myself an ISP till now.

Welcome to the New World, Hail Hitler.

Absolutely scary. And you're right. With the one story you had in this
weeks about the law to force accurate data to appear in one's whois record
that opens the door for a DMCA event where person A claims copyright
infringement against person B in the use of a domain name. Now currently
it would have to go to arbitration at ICANN at the cost of $2500 per 3
domain event. Under DMCA is would cost nothing to get the site sacked off
the net in 6 hours without ANY kind of validation from the claimant about
the veracity of their claim.

www.netcraft.com/survey/

ratio of ALL of the platforms at there. Thank gawd all my servers run FreeBSD.

Franz writes
Folks can subscribe to a really nifty newsletter that
will give them a really great handle on getting
traffic. Some of the ideas are so outrageous that they
make you laugh and say, Hey, how cum I didn't think of
that myself?. There are 2 versions of the newsletter
that folks can subscribe to, a free version and a pay
version. The pay version is like $20 a month.

THE JOYS OF SCIENTIFIC YOUTH
The brother-in-laws and I were reminiscing this weekend when we got to talking about three subjects from when we were the young lads. The talk was all about Estes Rockets, 049 Baby Bees, and tennis ball/potato cannons! Check these sites I found

Here was my favorite rocket...the Estes MEAN MACHINE. 6' of massive power...it didn't go that high...but it sure could draw a crowd. Check out leif garret in the brochure

The work horse U control airplane engine known throughout the land. The Cox 049 Baby Bee. Damn near cut my fingers off a few times with this bad boy
www.hobbiesr.com/cox/cox350.htm

They also had the Pee Wee, Tee Dee, Texaco, and you quickly rose to the head of the posse if you showed up at the playground with a new 049 Black Widow.

One of the first planes I built was a red dope "swordsman"

Here is the whole CG line. My favorite and last build was the Li'l Satan :)

I thought this site was tennis ball cannons, but it is actually potato cannons! The most advanced cannons I have ever seen. CNC machined billet aluminum with barrels the US military would be proud of.
