This months Wired mag came (again I am not sure why I am getting it...I think because some old mag I had died). I will admit I am enjoying many of the articles and may even renew :) The issue for June
page 098-06/2002 had an article titled "New Rules for the New Advertising Economy" by Chris Anderson, editor and Chief

I read this article and Chris's 5 points and was screaming at the top of my lungs "I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR 5 YEARS!" =) Once again, the mainstream world is 5 years behind porn. Let's talk about the interesting points Chris raises...and see how SHOCKED you are with these earth SHATTERING REVELATIONS.

1. shallow is good.
holy fuck. I have only made all my free sites "ONE" page for the last 5 years. I even called the old lips.com "the longest page on the net". It was so damn shallow (one page) and 30 feet of scrolling. WHY? Because I made far more money with shallow than I ever did with deep. DEEP = CONFUSING. I always believe that shallow sites are easier to use than deep. What's a search engine? Generally it is 2 pages...search box...results. That is shallow. The days of the deep site are gone....in fact...they never existed! Simplicity WINS if you ask me and SHALLOW = SIMPLER.

2. forget stickiness
my goodness gracious me. holy shockfest batman...I better clean my underwear after that one. NO GUFF. The only time that STICKINESS meant shit was when mainstream ads were $5CPM - $40CP and everyone was fleecing the shit out of ad buyers and really fleecing the stock market...which we all know became a ponzi scheme and crashed. With CPM ads, every time you show a banner, you get paid...so that was the only time ever that stickiness meant anything. In porn, stickiness never meant anything since the start of porn was PER CLICK. Porn never touched CPM ads...wisely. Now no one will touch CPM ads..they are simply foolish.

What are the stickiest sites in the world? Bulletin Boards...like UBB and VBB etc. I go to tons of these. They are notorious for brutal click rates...beyond brutal. What does sticky get you? Well you can build a community with sticky, but you can burn a shitpile of bandwidth as well.

TRAFFIC is what we all want....but let me clarify one step further UNIQUE TRAFFIC is the PURE GOLD that has the highest potential for maximum profit. UNIQUE is the OPPOSITE of STICKY.

3. real time is risky
Here Mr Anderson refers to sites such as game scores and stock quotes. In my opinion, this is no different than sticky. People come back 100 times to update stock prices. Such people are hard to make money on since you need a slew of different ads and advertisers to show them something each time to try and tempt them into buying something. Real time again, might build a community, but it is hard to sell to. This is the exact same as sticky.

4. communities are over rated
slap myself on top of the Jean Luke style hair cut head. Give me the smelling salts....I am going to faint. NO FREAKING GUFF! This is the same 1000 people reading 20 messages a day, making 20,000 raw hits and burning bandwidth. This again related to everything above. RAW HITS are DOO DOO and UNIQUE HITS ARE GOLD and COMMUNITIES are RAW ...logic follows that COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARDS ARE DOO DOO. Now once again I am exaggerating to make a point =) Communities are cool...they are just very difficult to make a buck off of and I think porn folks have been aware of this since UBB hit the streets. If this is news...I am going to plop my panties.

5. chase dilettantes, not obsessives
I tend to agree with this but again they are all the same issue. RAW HITS = OBSESSIVES and DILATTANTES = UNIQUES

Is it me or are these ideas 3 years+ old! =) If mainstream is just waking up to this, they should be hiring successful adult site operators as consultants.

GURU-O-GIF'S PRO-LEVEL NEW RULES OF ADVERTISING =)
you heard the "NEW" ideas from Wired....now here are the PRO LEVEL trix that find the GOLD in the mine.

1. TEXT LINK ADS KICK-ASS
banners work, but text links work better. They take up no space, are unobtrusive, and get HIGER CLICK RATES. The internet is about reading. Reading is text. If you have not dabbled with text ads, give them a try...you may be shocked how well they work. In my testing of google and goto ads, I always got 1%-1.5% click rates which is now unheard of in banners.

2. HAMMER PEOPLE WITH ADS
hammer them with a fry pan in the head. If you goal is to make money, then your site can have a lot of ads. I am not saying to console people to death...I am saying...have lots of text link ads and lots of banner ads. The more you ask for the sale, the higher the chance you will get a sale. Porn people already do this 99% of the time...but there are many mainstream sites that are too clean and could use WAY MORE ads and make way more money.

3. TEST TEST TEST (BANNERS - LAYOUTS - FROND-ENDS - BACK ENDS - ETC)
Please TEST... You basically need to test two things
a) click thru rate
b) buy rate

if you have a banner that is getting 0.5% or half a percent click rate, and you test and find a banner getting 0.75% click rate...you most likely have improved sales 33%! This is HUGE. After you find an ad with a higher click rate...also test it to make sure the purchases are higher. Lately I am finding a lot of banners that get me more clicks, but make me less money. Testing is this two step process. No where on earth is marketing research more at our fingertips than online. David Ogilvy would freak out if he was alive today and saw the advertising power we have. It is almost impossible to get this kind of data in TV and Radio. With internet, you get incredibly accurate answers in minimal time. Testing should be part of all commerce sites.

4. FANCY NEVER PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE
Cookies, Java, Flash and fun tricks cost money at the end of the day. Simple gifs and jpgs generally test better (especially if the size of the ads is the same). Yes some flash banners can get great click rates..try some tests. My results always lead me to believe in simplicity. If someone is silly enough to grab the hammer and try to hit the monkey in the flash banner...then that same person will click on an animated gif saying the same goofy stuff. Sure he won't get to whack the monkey but he will be transported to your site. Know what I mean Vern?

5. SIZE CAN HELP
Here is a simple test for you. Let's say you have a 468x60 old school banner of an affiliate site and it is getting a 0.5% click rate....try this...take that same banner and repeat it 9 times...so it is like 9 verticle or 3x3 so it now takes up way more space and looks like a groovy pattern....you WILL get more CLICKS. I often use this trick on sites. There is not bandiwidth hit since it is the same damn gif 9 times.

Also, if you control the site and make money on ads...try large gifs. Try full page or 400x400 pixels...this will generally get clicked more. I prefer the first method more since the k size and bandwidth is lower...but you may test some mega large banners occasionally.

For the content question, you need:

A full adult release
A clear clean copy of a federal Id ( drivers license, passport, etc... )

That is all you NEED, I recommend the following to back you up:

A video of the girl agreeing to what you are about to do, showing her id to the cam and a video of her signing the release. Also, if he/she is gonna get paid cash a receipt signed by the model. On my release I have a clause that says that she was not under any kind of drug before, while and after the shoot, only because you want to make sure that if she feels she fucked up, she doesn't say that she was drunk or high so therefore the release is void.

read 5 years of old newsletters :) trix.sexswap.com There just is not easy answer. the question is so broad....here is a general answer that may she ligh. Try 5-10 ways of getting traffic. Then pick the one method (two at the most) that worked best for you, and become a complete expert (totally proficient) in that ONE way. It is so competitive now that you must be a complete expert in one for of traffic generation to get anywhere.

see above. there is no easy way to advertise since you wil not be able to buy traffic at a low enough rate since big sites can pay more for it.

When you are chasing crooks, you can only rely on scripts and filters for part of the solution...the real key is that you much ACTIVELY monitor your servers each day. This is try for all types on internet business. Pay sites, game servers, banner exchanges, gambling sites, affiliate programs....there is nothing like human eyeballs and knowledge to detect and catch CROOKS. If you do not take an active part, you risk being robbed blind. Yes it is dull and boring, but it is key. D. I'm a tedious bitch. You know it. I know it. That's why I watch my logfiles.

In a telnet session, use this command (substituting your directory path)
tail -f /var/log/httpd/access-log.latexfetish.com

I keep that telnet window open in the background. Since I keep an eye on
it, I notice both brute force attacks and the nasty little thieves who
get user/pass to my site.

As I said the last time I e-mailed you, I use BigNoseBird's script,
Birdtrap, to redirect 401, 404, 400 and 500 errors to good pages. 403s,
though, I send straight to Hell via di.html.

Folks who don't get familiar with their servers -- like through the
logfiles -- deserve what they get. Relying 90%-100% on automation scripts
to catch thieves and errors is what opens you up to thieves and errors.

It doesn't have to be a telnet window, but that's my favorite. Low
bandwidth, not a lot of energy for either the server or the PC/Mac that
you're using to telnet in with.

Yesterday, I upgraded a server from twin, mirrored 20-gig drives to twin,
mirrored 120-gig drives. Since I was upgrading, I had the latest Apache,
Postfix, Perl, Php and MSQL installed. I knew problems were coming, and I
prepared for the worst of them by downloading all of my cgi databases
before the switch.

When the new server came online -- with nearly all of my data -- all I had
to do was watch the error logs to see what had slipped by.

I'm running about 15 sites (7 porn, four adult fetish and 3 non-porn), so
the windows were spitting out all kinds of errors -- forgotten .htaccess
files, images/files I'd forgotten to move from the old to the new server,
bad cgi calls because of the Perl upgrade ... all kinds of crap.

But as the errors came through, I decided which was most important and
dealt with them first. Since I had a backup on my PC, I was able to sort
out most of the problems within a few hours. A day later, I've still got a
few glitches, but the error log is telling me where to look.

Nothing -- and I mean nothing -- beats knowing something about your own
server.
