But thought you'd appreciate this info I sussed out from "one of the major processors", after contacting them to find out about the possible MC halt of recurring billing, as of May 1 (which, once again your groovy newsletter alerted me to -- which allowed me to not pee MY pants, and get some facts from my processor). In essence "one of the major processors" told me:

Mastercard is not implementing the May 1 deadline on "one of the major processors". They are working closely with them to develop a plan that will keep things moving along as usual. In fact "one of the major processors" is meeting in NY on May 3 with MC to work out a new plan of action. I think MC just wants more info re: the merchant -- like Visa does. In other words: doing stuff like forwarding over the URL, ALONG WITH the transaction info -- to monitor and lock out the crooks and keep them from hiding inside of 3rd party processors.

"one of the major processors" assured me it would be business as usual on May 1st.

TESTING PART2 OF UNDERLINE AND STRIPPED
Since I got the answer at google answers (more on this story below), I was able to have two identical links on a page saying "click here for BIG BOOBS". Of the the links was underlined like normal and one was stripped or called text decoration = none. If you still don't believe, you could argue that the bottom slot is better than the top but I don't think this had to big on an influence in this case. I was too tired to flip them back and forth. Note, if you click them both, and then go back, the underline reappears since it is now a visited link. Let see what else....I am forgetting something...oh ya....the first few days of the week are in error since I tried methods with frames and these failed because the frame pushed the underlined link off the page....the key days are the last 3-4 since the test was functional on Friday onward. On a side note...I see that fun litte counter that I use...simple counter, is going under. I am sure things over whelmed them and they did not have a way to make money. Counters are always a tough business. I know KidSlick was working hard on a new counter service...I'll have to check in with him and see if he has completed it.

I honestly had the answer to question 1 in 30 minutes. Awesome. At the time of writing this paragraph, about 2 hours have past and I do not have the Japanese word ENTER yet. I would love to see this area of google grow. I applied to answer questions for fun...but heck!...I don't think there is one question there that I know the answer too :)

JAPANESE WEBMASTERS - HELP! =)
I was wondering if I might be able to ask a couple of questions regarding Japanese websites. I am trying to create a new banner for my asian traffic and wanted to try perhaps a banner with actual Japanese characters but I am not having much luck.

1. ENTER? On many english sites, there is the word ENTER or ENTER HERE. I was wondering what terms the Japanese entrance pages use most often? I heard it might be "YES I am over 18". Can anyone fill me in with the most common wording going into a Japanese site?

2. GIF
could you make a gif of those words for me to play with? I'll test and let people know how it does. I do not have a japanese character set so I cannot see the proper characters.

I have mainly been a free-site and banner exchange site guy that fiddles with traffic and therefore I don't have any designs of my personal paysites since I have only ever owned one. I personally did not enjoy the paysite model. I can however, talk about the sites where I send my traffic...since these are paysites. I enjoy the math of testing and let the results determine what the best front-end is. Here are the site design styles that I personally feel are working best at converting hits at this point in time. I have shown these examples before.

Notice how all these sites sort of have a similar feel...lots of small pics of the actual girls...no fancy flash code....very little java. They have a "home grown" feel but are clean and efficient and show the girls who are inside. Again, ANY front-end might be great or bad...the only way you can tell is to build additional entrances to your site and from time to time, TEST THEM for 2-3 days and see which one signs up the best. The best information comes from simple testing. I would try to make 3 designs...all different and then try them out. If one did really well, then I might go back next time and use that winning design but alter it 3 ways ...maybe colors...where I ask for the sale...size of fonts..etc and then test these 3 modifications of the winner.

I think this is the best way to create the front or entrance to paysites.

Just a few thoughts on this MC/Visa story. I don't know much about the CVV2
information but I'll call my merchant account guys today and see what I can
find out. I use my merchant account, as you know, for my lingerie biz so I
don't do a lot of recurring billing. I haven't come across the CVV2 stuff
yet and no one has mentioned it to us.

How will they know they are internet transactions? What about magazine
subscriptions, health club memberships, paying your bills online? They all
keep this info stored and use it recurring. Seems to me like that would put
a big hurt on a lot of people if you couldn't do recurring billing, right?
And definitely not just the porn industry. I understand their reasons for
trying to come up with something to stop people from rebilling cards when
they shouldn't be, but this seems a bit extreme don't you think?

In that Photoshop software box plug-in article by Allen the link to the plug-in is very long. There is a website you might have (or might not) heard of called smlnk.com, which can take a long URL and give you a smaller 26 char URL.

Heh this is old news to webdesigners...we go one step
further here and use a style sheet to make SURE the
underline shows up (you can turn off the option in
your browser). it just makes sense, everyone
associates the underline with a link...good test
though and i would certainly agree with those results.

She got royally screwed by the "marketers". I learned
long ago, the HARD way, never to put my self or my
sites into the hands of strangers who would market my
sites or move me to number one or some other mox nix
bullshit like that. When I first chose to become an
entrepreneur of adult content on the Internet, back in
1997 when there was less competition, I put myself on
every mainstream marketing newsletter that I could
find. within several months I had become an "expert" on
how to market my sites. Anything that was non-technical
I learned how to do myself. It was time consuming but
it paid off in that my outlay of cash to Internet
marketing "experts" amounted to zero. I also made an
amazing discovery, namely, that of every industry
around, my porn competitors were the most generous and

helpfull people in the world. I never heard of an
industry in my life before in which your competitors
try to help you. Its unheard of in mainstream. Quickly
I made friends with people in the industry that were
very hip when it came to technologies. If I needed
something technical done, I got help from my new found

porn meister friends, or else I offered to pay them.
But believe me, even when I paid trhem to do some job
for me, it was MINIMAL. I would rather not be first
place and not have anything to do with these blood
sucking bastards. Fortunately I fell into a niche that
uses somewhat different methods of getting traffic. The
nitch is transgender and the secret is networking.
What I want to say vis-a-vis Kendra's troubles is that
there is a lot of help out there in Internet land that
you can get from your porn buddies, and the chances
are that once you network you will usually find generous
people who will be glad to help you, for free or for a
little bit, and not screw you. It's alright Kendra. We
all pay our dues. Mine was back in the mid 90s when
I was naive. It amounted to $1000. I wrote it off as an
learning experience and as a tax loss. Like Rabbi

It is less than 100 bucks. I bought it and set it up with a new domain name I found at deleteddomains.com (buzzsearch.com) in a couple hours. What it does is force me to write ads to fill up the search results with my own affiliate codes and try to get webmaster/advertiser sign-ups. The other Pay-Per-Click scripts I found are $200 and a competitor at $190 so I think the smartcgis is a good value. I set my cc payment option for clickbank. If you set this script up with them you have to sign-up an account yourself and send the clickbank raise-limits team with the login URL, account and password. I could have saved some time if I would have done that to begin with instead of emailing back and forth.

I started sending all my mainstream traffic through my own engine and placed some search boxes on my adult sites.
Now I need to get code from every product on earth so I get the all .01 cent clicks. So if nothing else comes of it I will at least get my own keyword search data and what ever clicks I send that covert. But there is hope I got an advertiser sign-up the first day I set-up the site he didn't write any ads though. I guess I will have to send him an email explaining how easy it is manage listings.

I was explaining what I had read about VISA requiring CVV2 for online purchases and how they wouldn't allow processors to store the information. It makes logical sense that this would lead to the end of recurring billing so long as they require the CVV2 number for billing. However, this webmaster I was talking to is pretty sharp and he flat out said this doesn't make any sense. Asking for the CVV2 is fine because it helps to prove you have the card and not just a cardslip. But, he asks, why would they disallow storing the CVV2 number but allow storing the actual creditcard number? Wouldn't it be easier to simply disallow storing either number? There would certainly not be a need to wait for older VISA cards to expire before taking that step.

The MasterCard situation will probably not end up affecting many people. PayPal will work things out with MasterCard and processors like "one of the major processors" and iBill simply had a change in labeling. It may indeed turn out to be nothing mroe than a strongarm tactic on the part of MasterCard.

Well if the pre-sell works so well, why don't sponsors just have a pre-tour that you send the surfer

best pre-sell. Maybe their could be different pre-sell tours for TGP traffic, search engine traffic,
etc.

For one thing, I think that getting traffic and selling to traffic are two different sets
of skills. Some people may be good at getting traffic, but are not good at closing the sale.
I think it would be better for the sponsor to test and fine tune the pre-sell
because they get so much more traffic.

Here is my short version of the chapter about "Deep Throat":
For the younger generations we must point out the fact that "Deep Throat"
is not Fox Mulders shadowwy contact in "X-Files" - The original "Deep
Throat" is a classic porn movie released way back in the stone age (one
year after I was born, in 1972 ). Video is a decade away from being
invented and porn movies is something a depraved few go to see in adult
movie theatres in back alleys. "Deep Throat" is no worse and no better than
other movies running in these theatres at the time. The film cost $25-40k
to make and was cut together of new material and older porn movie loops
featuring the same actors. The plot is simple, Linda loves sex but is
unable to have an orgasm - a doctor discovers that her clitoris is located
at the back of her throat and teach her how to take a penis all the way
down there and in the rest of the movie she administeres this talent on a
variety of men.

"Deep Throat" isn't really that good a movie (not even for it's time). But
for some reason it was the right movie at the right time and it became THE
porn movie that broke out of the shades and into mainstream entertainment.
LOADS of buzz and hype and suddenly "Deep Throat" is the most talked about
movie of the year. Porn is chic and "Deep Throat" is the coolest thing.
Everyone have heard about it and some have even dared to see it - magazines
double their sales suggesting on the cover they have "something about
Throat" inside.

Throat cashes a reported $6 million that year (estimated $600 million by
1980) and Linda is the biggest celebrity in the world. But a bitter one -
she only made $1,200 from the movie. So she makes a smart move and "writes"
her first autobiography (in 1973) - a graphic description of her experience
making Throat - and cashes in on the the hype and curiosity - "Read the
book - you may never see the film". She is famous for being famous and
fails big time making it as a mainstream actress (she can't act). She
returns to porn to make another 20 or so hardcore movies but even here she
isn't a great succes and hits her lowest in "Linda Lovelace and a dog" - a
16 min home movie featuring just what the tittle suggest. Linda is fading
fast and in 1980 she makes a final attempt to juice her name in her 3rd
autobiograhy, "Ordeal". She has milked the book cow twice already and she
is bitter, so her "new shocking revelations" is how her (now ex)
husband/manager had forced her to make "Deep Throat" and just about every
other sexual act she performed while being with him ... she is a poor
abused woman who never wanted to what she did. This is mamma from heaven to
the feminists and anti-porn movement and Linda had a short afterlife as an
anti-porn icon. In later interviews she goes even futher overboard and
claimes she was acting in Throat with a gun pointed to her head. Now this
could of course be true ... BUT, anyone who have seen her convincing act of
true pleasure in that film (remember she couldn't act) will find it hard to
belive this was all done at gun point ... PLUS, no one else involved in the
production have ever backed any parts of her wild claims (even a 20 inch
dick / 60 IQ porn star would notice if the girl he was fucking had a gun yo
her head). ... and most importantly, these claims are complete
contradictions of her own statements 8 years earlier (when porn was chic)
about how she would never regret anything and she didn't make this movie
for the money or because she was forced to do it

My personal conclution: Lindas life and career is a sad story of starting
out with a huge accidental success that she didn't have the talent to
follow up on so she ends up sucking up any attention she can get ... this
attention happens come from feminists who took her unlikely stories at face
value so she plays along and make up even more juicy stories to get more
attention. And so the porn star by accident ends up becomming anti-pornstar
by accident in a life that in faiths irony ends with an accident.

Hi Andy, I am a beginning webmaster (general hardcore site, not yet online) and struggling to decide if I should have to go for implementing a trial membership (with monthly autorenewal) or offer directly a monthly membership with autorenewal on my site. Is there a difference in first time conversion between: conversion to trail (4.95 for three days) and conversion to monthly memberships? Are they the same? I have noticed that 99% of the market goes for trial memberships? What would be the strongest argument to opt for a trial membership? (Webmaster math) What about charge backs on trial sign-ups? How do you handle those? And at the end, don´t you earn the same with a trial period as with a monthly sign-up? Or is monthly sign-up only for those big sites? Thanks a lot! I would appreciate it very much!

this is a tough question. I do not have an exact answer, but if you want to make more money, my personal believe is that you will make more with the trials since you are then offering two things to buy. People can pick TRIAL or FULL and many people are nervous and like the idea of a cheaper price to see if they like it. I have always believed that paysites make most of their money on the laziness of human nature not to quit. If this is true, then the TRIAL route should make more income in the end. The trouble is you will also get higher chargeback rates and have more work to do since more people will be quitting.

All of this above paragraph is somewhat moot. The correct answer is that you should probably TEST =) The test would not be hard to set up...what would be hard is the timeframe since you might have to do it for 3-5 months before you really knew. Let me think about this a little more as I read more of your email....I think we can guesstimate some numbers to avoid long testing.

OK, very interesting that 90%+ go for trial. This again reinforced my guess that you will make more with trials. You AVERAGE STAY will be lower overall, but you GROSS INCOME I believe will be higher. Why? Since many people who take the trial will do one of the following 1) quit before the trial is up ...you still made a small amount of money 2) like the site and not quit ...this is a good customer and you will make great money from him 3) forget to quit...I think this is a lot of paysite income 4) too lazy to quit...same as number 3. Again, the people who select TRIAL will stay less time over all...but if you get 10:1 sign up rates...then the math is easy. With the trial, I will guess the average stay is 2 months. Without the trial, my guess is that the average stay is 4 months...to be more conservative...let's pretend it is an amazing 5 months. Well at 9:1 signs ups...you should add TRIAL as an option since the stay is 2.5:1. The point where it gets to be a close call seems to be around 70%. If you had 70% of less of sign-ups choosing TRIAL and 30%+ choosing FULL, then you might decide to offer only FULL.

In conclusion, if it was my site, I would offer both the TRIAL and FULL. This is again since I have the synical view than many people sign-up and stay at paysites for reasons other than adult entertainment value. If you agree with this, or in the numbers, than it makes sense to get MORE sign-ups and this can be done by offering trial memberships. You must always be careful and keep an eye on your chargeback rates....make it very easy for people to contact you and get out of the trial...othewise the chragebacks will hit the roof and the site will lose its billing accounts. The customer cannot be held hostage. Many will quit but it is all part of doing business with trials.
