News Tips Trix
This is the almost weekly
SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2
and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains
information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for
the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of
nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends
to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to
it.

It has been an interesting
week. Do you think we are headed into the third oil crisis? I sure hope
not. I have some oil stop and would make out like a bandit but it would
hammer the rest of the ecomony and everything else would suffer. I hope
things stabilize in the middle east. Time will tell. Want a hot stock
tip? WARNING: rule # 1 of investing...never take hot stock tips =) That
being said, there is a sector that is on fire right now and that is
clothing. Do you ever go to the mall? I don't but once a year I am dragged
there for some ungodly reason and I have seen this like what I thought
was a 'head shop' as they used to be called when these are the clothing
stores of today's youth! I am talking about "Hot Topic". This
little stock is on fire.
bigcharts.marketwatch.com/quickchart/quickchart.asp?symb=hott
here are two others..again
clothing
bigcharts.marketwatch.com/quickchart/quickchart.asp?symb=chs
bigcharts.marketwatch.com/quickchart/quickchart.asp?symb=chbs
not sure why but these companies
are doing well and their bottom lines look nice

moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/results/hilite.asp?Symbol=chs
moneycentral.msn.com/investor/invsub/results/hilite.asp?Symbol=chbs
Right now I have a pocketfull
of chbs and can't complain. I hope the rest of the economy follows suit
and I think this shows that people are still shopping and spending coin.
Enough stock talk...let's see what's below...how about a Java redirect
based on referrer from Mortan. Here is a cool little script that people
were asking about a week or two ago. Very slick.
Lots of comments on how to
use more than one thrid party processor on a join form.
Some code for the programmers
or server admins...a slick and rare authentication patch for mod_auth_mysql.c
from young Craig.
I also have an interesting
story on the financials of an actual money making paysite. Normally
I turn away people wanting to sell a site since it is a plug...but Kurt
send me in a ton of info on his site that he is interested in selling.
What caught my eye was that he had tons of figures AND the site has
SUPER net margins. I thought it would be fun for folks to see what a
nicely run site is doing with stable and growing traffic. AND, if you
have every considered buying a site, this looks like a sweet package
and you might drop Kurt an email and try and cut a deal. He is asking
in the 250-300k range.

INTERNET HAMMERS PORN MAG
SALES from Richard and Greg and Steve
PENTHOUSE MAY GO UNDER
www.nytimes.com/2002/04/08/business/media/08PENT.html?todaysheadlines
www.thisislondon.com/dynamic/news/story.html?in_review_id=546190&in_rev

news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/business/newsid_1917000/1917688.stm
What has been continually
shocking about the porn mags and there attempts to go online is that
most of them have failed. What does this mean? Well these are my opinions
but
1. CONTENT does not automatically
make you a successful paysite
I have been arguing this until I am blue in the face. I am not saying
that I do not know some very successful content sellers. What I am saying
is that content is a very small portion of the online porn game. Nobody
has more content than Playboy and Penhouse and both are having a very
hard time online with paysites. What should they have done differently?
As funny as it seems, they should of LICNESED CONTENT and avoided trying
to start paysites. They could of done $50M+ a year with content licensing
but I am sure they were too proud and guarded of their pictures to even
conceive of such a business model.
2. BRICK AND MORTAR are not
as big of a competitive threat as once was thought
I hear so many people say "just wait until the vegas casinos go
online...they will kill all competition and have a monopoly". And
I say to that "bullshit". The exact same story would play
out. Online is a very different game than brick and mortar and these
old companies are not very net saavy...from the CEOs down to the janitors...most
are behind the times in terms of computer acceptance.
3. ONLINE is changing how
we interact, shop, and get entertained.
Television is very nervous, and they should be. They are in a ton of
trouble and it is going to get worse as we all watch less and less TV
from here on in. There will be major network bankrupcies. I also think
Radio will suffer as well. The written world is one of the fastest ways
for us to get info and we control what we read where with TV and radio,
we are fed data. The internet is going to get bigger, and other media
is goingto shrink. Books and magazine...all going to suffer as well
and not just porn. Porn leads the way...this is going to occur in every
niche.

GOOGLE NEWS
I always like keeping an eye on google and this week it was all over
the news. Google was sued by Overture. This should be a very interesting
case. Google launched a beta news search. I find it to be excellent.

WIRED MAG ARTICLE ON FUTURE
from guru-O-gif
www.wired.com
I don't subscribe but they seem to send me a copy free...maybe because
I have lied so much to get free mags that they think I really do run
that $2B a year Bio Tech firm =) hee hee hee. Well I read this month's
copy and it was really much better than I remembered it. I think they
are adapting to the times. It is more of a sci fi journal now. They
had this neat section of POSSIBLE future events and then two big wigs
would take the YES or NO side of the story. Here are some of the interesting
and provocative points and my votes and arguments. Please feel free
to send in your thoughts on any of these ideas if you wish. andy@lips.com
PILOTLESS PLANES BY 2020
YES - CTO Microsoft
NO - CEO Google
NO - Guru-O-Gif
there is no way this will
happen by 2020 if you ask me. Simple logic says...look at subways and
trains. Why do we still have drivers. It is just safer. If we don't
have pilotless trains and subways now, we will not be doing planes in
2020.
HALF OF BOOKS WILL BE PRINTED
ON DEMAND ON 2010
YES - Former Editor Randomhouse
NO - VP Worldcom
NO - Guru-O-Gif
it will happen, but not in
8 years. The machines are just hitting the market now and costs will
take time to go down. I think it will occur, but maybe 25% by 2010
COMPUTER PASSES TURING TEST
2029
cogsci.ucsd.edu/~asaygin/tt/ttest.html
www.turing.org.uk/turing/scrapbook/test.html
the Turing test seems to
be like the test in "BladeRunner" where they asked the cyborg
what he would do if a turtle was flipped on its shell in the middle
of a road. The test is basically a test to see if a scientest can tell
human responses from that of a computer.
YES - Entrepenuer
NO - Founder Lotus
NO - Guru-O-Gif
2029 is still too close.
I think the test will be passed but my guess is 2050
UNIVERSE WILL STOP EXPANDING
YES - CTO Applied Minds
NO - Cofounder Intellectual Ventures
YES - Guru-O-Gif
changed my vote after chatting
with Richard. Seems that at some point, the bang could run out fo steam
and than gravity works its relentless magic
RUSSIA WILL BE WORLD LEADER
OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT 2012
YES - ChairEDventure
NO - Chair Intuit
NO - Guru-O-Gif
In my opinion, Russia's problem
is that it currently is still in a "WILD WEST" phase, like
america was in the early 1900's when Chicago mob bosses ruled. You cannot
become a world software developer when there is such a strong mafia
presence.
WEBLOGS WILL OUTRANK NEW
YORK TIMES SITE BY 2007
(based on a Google search of five keywords or phrases reflecting top
five news stories)
YES - CEO Userland
NO - CEO New ork Times
YES - Guu-O-Gif
Easily. People search for
news and NY times does not have a monopoly on it. I would think this
is close to happening already.
US MEN'S SOCCER TEAM WILL
WIN WORLD CUP BEFORE REDSOX WIN WORLD SERIES
YES - Editor Time
NO - Ted Danson
I see this as a tie and the
weakest question in the poll
BIO TERROR WILL KILL 1MILLION
IN A SINGLE EVENT BY 2020
YES - Astrophysicist
NO - Guru-O-Gif
History has shown us time
and time again that it is very difficult to kill mass amounts of people
with bio terror. I don't think there has been a bio terror event of
10,000 and therefore I cannot see one of 1M in such a short time span.
Bombs are much more efficient as sad as that may be. Bio Terror just
makes great headlines.
Here is perhaps one of the
most interesting questions
AT LEAST ONE PERSON BORN
IN 2000 WILL BE ALIVE IN 2150
YES - Cofounder Gloabl Business Netowork
this is a tough call. I am
going to say
YES - Guru-O-Gif
In 1900, that average lifespan
was 45 and we are close to 85 as the cofounder argues. I also think
technology is growing at a explonential rate. I would also argue we
most likely have a cure for cancer by that time. I think one or two
people have lived to 110 in our world so I think we could see a 150
year old person in 2150....as completely shocking as that seems today.

RE: CCBILL AND IBILL ON SAME
JOIN FORM from Allen
Allen writes
To answer the questions:
1. Can you use the two programs
on one sign up form?
Yes, CCbill, Ibill, Epoch etc, etc.you can use them all if you wish.
2. What are some of the ways
of doing it?
The .htpasswd part is easy, just have their(or your) scripts point to
the same file. If you need to track affiliate sales as well, you either
need to buy an affiliate script, or do a little programming to track
variables through the forms.
3. What are the things you
need to watch out for?
Depends on how and what you're doing.

RE: RUNNING TWO FULFILLMENT
COMPANIES SIMULTANEOUSLY from Franz
Franz writes
Regarding the question as to how to deal with 2 fullfillment companies
using one .htaccess file.
In year 1999 I got a company
known as OCC as a fullfillment company for my website They were good
enough to set up a data file of members using my .htaccess file. In
year 2000 I also got a secondary company, Verotel, as a fullfillment
company because they offered payment options that OCC did not. Verotel
had to set up their own script for members joining thru them. I told
Verotel that I already had a members data base for the site set up by
OCC. Verotel told me that they would use the same data base for members
joining thru THEIR company. I don't know how they scripted it but they
used the .htaccess that I already had set up. Subsequently I stopped
using OCC and now only use Verotel but the same scripting is probably
still up there.
I took a look at the .htaccess
file in place on the server to see if there might be anything relevant
that would help your readers, but it just seems to be a straight forward
simple script that accepts members. There is no action that tells about
where the members come from.

I think it is possible to use both processors if you use the Ibill password
management system rather than pincodes. We are currently in the process
of setting up this very thing and I will know for sure by the end of
next week. Many people are going for secondary processors along with
Ibill because of the problems there.

SMALL FLASH BANNERS CAN WORK
WELL from Niggle
Niggle writes
re:468x60 is now to small and you have to HAMMER surfers in the head
to get them to click and porn folks know this.
It can be done in 468 * 80.
Below is the URL of a Flash banner slighty bigger in size - but still
a banner. I created this to promote my favorite sponsor and it's getting
massive click-through rates when used with music as a popup or without
sound on a TGP page.
www.xxxcompetitions.com/misc-articles/wasteland.html
But yes, it takes the hammering
approach! I think a well designed, high-impact Flash animation can still
make use of small amounts of page real estate and obtain good click-through
rates. It's all got to do with the design - and most new Flash Animators
are clueless as to how to maximize what little space they have or how
make an animation stream well enough to get people's attention right
from the start. It takes more than using Swish to create powerful ads.
Hee,hee, my other ad along
that line can be found at - Sorry for the long URL, but that's the raw
address.
www.xxxcompetitions.com/banner_farm/xxxcompetitions/flash-banners/come-home-generic.swf
As biased as I am, I rarely
see many good ads done in Flash still. Streamability and low-bandwidth,
but high impact elements are
the key to making it clickable.
All I know is that this particular
site has the highest clickthru of any of my sponsors and that the banner
has rated highly in focus-testing - everyone wanted to click it - so
it's doing something right is all I know... but yes, would prefer solid
stats...

ADULT SITE FOR SALE from
Kurt
Andy writes
Kurt sent me in this email asking on how he might be able to sell his
site. Now normally I don't publish such letters, but this one is kind
of interesting and I asked Kurt for permission to publish it. Normally
I would ask a seller to buy an add but Kurt has some very nice numbers
in here and I thought it would be more interesting to talk about this
and the art of selling an adult site. It is never easy to sell an online
entity (especially adult). Kurt has solid numbers and really nice NET
profits of $3000 a week! Here is a fine example of a successfull adult
site that is being run very well. If anyone is interesting in more info
on the sites..please email Kurt directly at webmaster@safebase.com
Kurt writes
I am in a situation where I need to get rid my 'on-line activities'
due to familiarly circumstances and I have several not important sites
and one very good one. The stuff in circulation from that site provide
all the publicity I need - have not used spam, tgp, etc. For more than
a
year and still there is a steady weekly income (less expenses) of
average more than 3000$ (documented) this have been so for the past
years. My problem is that I will not be able to keep the site updated.
My question is - where do
I go to get a fair price for the site ?
Have tried one day to go
to a webmasters discussion forum for advice,
only to get laughed of by the guys there (ok I have not spend a second
on the signup pages for two years, but they do ok, a potential buyer
should only be happy to know he/her can double or triple the income
by
making better signup pages)
The payouts received for
about the past year is included below, and you
can add to that a little more than 6000 for the past 3-4 months for
this
site also from pay pal signups.
My expenses for the service
is 1000$ month for colo bandwidth and 550$
for holio (stroke a good deal with them)
I will not give it away,
as I know the buyer is having a real money
machine, my only problem is that even a money machine have to be greased
from time to time :-)

here are some ideas Kurt and I tossed around on ways to sell an adult
site or perhaps keep it but make it less work
1. contact sponsors and affiliates
you have worked with in the past
I find it is a lot easier to cut a deal with people you know and trust
and have worked with in the past
2. could you hire young Johnny
to run the site
pay him a salary and thereby keep most of the profits.
3. run sites into ground
(not pretty but can work in some cases)
sometimes the math of certain paysites warrants running them into the
ground if you want out. In this case it does NOT work, but let me give
you a case that might just to entertain the idea. Let's say you run
a large pay site and have an affiliate program that is all "per
signup". You want to find a buyer but can't and you still want
to cash out and you are tired of buying content. Sometimes the math
is better running the site into the ground. Here is why.
a. stop buying content. your
content will be old and people will quit but you are trying maximize
NET as fast as possible
b. warn all webmasters you are stopping all signups on a given day.
This way they have time to pull links etc. The wierd thing is that if
you are big, there will still be tons of links floating around and you
will still get signup from these links and old cookies.
c. one rare thing that I have not talked about at the end of a paysites
life is that you tend to get all the lazy people that never read their
credit card bills and they are with you for a long time...so you get
very long average stays at the end of a Pay Sites life. I saw this experience
first hand when I sold my site SIXCHICKS.COM to Karl in 97. I was sure
Karl would close the site in 3 months and he would of made money. Well
Karl used to joke that he was still billing some people after 18 months!
He ran it into the ground and there were tons of people that just never
quit
so because of these wierd
things, you can sometimes make a case for cutting costs to a minimum,
stopping all payouts, cancelling all new content, cut staff to one,
and run a site into the ground and make bank in the last months of its
life...again this would only work in certain circumstances and when
you really wanted out and it is not pretty.
4. find a partner to run
50/50
this is always an option but I always say "I HATE PARTNERS".
The most common reason people take partners is insecurity. I have seen
it countless times. I ask people...why do you need him as a partner
"well he is good at A and I am good at B" ...well that is
bullshit...guess what...A can be bought and B can be bought so forget
that and go it alone and buy the thing they offer..it is always cheaper
in the end and partnerships are highly volatile always. If you do do
one...make sure you really know the person have have worked with them
in the past in regular business. Also try to make them so they have
a limited lifespan..so there is an end point within X years. I know
you don't believe me and I know you think you will loev each other...but
personalilties and human nature make it so everyone feels ripped off
and the partnership implodes 9 time out of 10.
5. just keep the site but
try to make your life happier
I sold a sign store to my employee a few years back and he comes and
chats with me every few weeks. It is hard work but the money is good.
A couple of week ago he hated getting up in the morning and going to
work. Why? The answer is always "Employees and Customers".
=) He was working himself to death and was hating life. I gave him three
simple ideas that could make the store a lot more fun. He was just too
busy to think of them on his own
a. raise the minimum order.
it was $20 and they bumped it to $25. They are already swamped...this
chases people away OR you make more money and do not hate things as
much
b. close saturdays. he had
worked 6 days a week for ten years and it was killing him. Some people
can do it and others need a brake. He closed saturdays for the first
time. he might make a touch less money but he will keep his sanity
c. say no. too often he was
saying yes to jobs he should not of been quoting.
he started these three simple
things and now he has that skip in his step once again and he loves
going back into work. How does this relate to selling an adult site?
Well many times we want out of a business when it becomes no fun. By
tweaking little things...we might have more fun and there there is no
need to sell. Here is an example. I HATE the sexswap HELP FORM emails
=) I want to scream when I get some of them. You would not believe some
of them. "when do you pay me a check?" "how do I paste
code" . Now I know we all were beginners once, but I am shocked
that people are starting sites and are so lost. I don't even know where
to begin with some of these folks...I want to send then a tutorial on
basic html or something. Well to keep my sanity, I get "Sanchy"
the wife to answer them now and just send me the hard ones. We sit right
beside each other so she can yell out anytime she is stuck. By giving
her that task, it makes my day tons more fun.
Kurt adds
It's a teenage sex site (off cause 100% legal) with everyday girls.
I have made 50% of the material myself and the rest I got from a good
friend (we swapped rights) All traffic is coming from people who have
stumbled over our videos by people sharing, kazaa, edonkey, Usenet etc.
(our site name is on all vids.) So it spreads like rings in the water
so to say.

AMAZONSCAN.COM ARTICLE ON
$70k MOST LIKELY A PUBLICITY STUNT from Anonymous
Anonymous writes
I don't want to "accuse" pud of anything, because I love his
site and he's a funny guy, but I would bet good money that those numbers
are total bullshit. He is a great publicity hound. When I read that
article on the Wired site a little while ago, the first thing I did
was to go check Goto's search tool to see how many people were searching
for "Amazon Scan" - the number of people searching for it,
the month I checked, was ZERO. Then I checked the Alexa traffic stats
for AmazonScan.com and FuckedCompany.com and there is no way in the
world he's doing what he says he's doing.
inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
(Down right now, so I can't confirm the search numbers, last time I
checked it was zero)
www.alexa.com/partners/site_stats_signup.html?url=www.amazonscan.com&second=true&c1=tn&c2=ua&c3=l
(one traffic star, ranked 152,555)
www.alexa.com/partners/site_stats_signup.html?url=www.fuckedcompany.com&second=true&c1=tn&c2=ua&c3=l
(three traffic stars, ranked number 3709)
Our site is Alexa ranked
in the top 1000 with 4 traffic stars, and I can tell you right now that
there is no way we could sell that many books. We have tried, with both
Amazon and BN, and there is no way. Alexa stats are squirrelly as hell,
and strange, but they give you a very very rough idea of what's going
on. Again, I don't have access to pud's Amazon stats, so a miracle is,
in theory, possible, but I say it's bull.
andy writes
I have to agree. When I saw the number $70k, I was shocked since I have
sold about $3k of amazon crud in 3 years and used to spam heavily for
it and it is so hard to sell and you make such low commissions that
$70k would take HUGE traffic. I don't think any amazon affiliate is
doing giant numbers like these in that story. If it was a publicity
stunt, it worked and fooled me :)

SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSIONS
REVISITED from Kevin
Kevin writes
Quick question for you regarding search engines... I have about 50 feeder
sites on 8 different domains, so about 400 sites total that have never
been submitted to search engines... Now, I was thinking of getting a
program such as
www.trafficbuilder.com/
to submit them for me...
Firs,t is that program any good?
Andy writes
it looks good and is well reviewed. I have not heard of it but I trust
two cows reviews
Kevin writes
If not, any others you suggest?
Andy writes
I haven't spammed engines in so long that the ones used to use are old.
Two that come to mind are
Submission Wizard
www.exploit.net/wizard/
AdWeb Pro
www.cyberspacehq.com/products/AddWeb/home.shtm
these both served me well
in the old days. At the end I used none of those and had a programmer
design me one that was completely custom. It was perl based and I could
schedule events to submit any amount of url to any amount of engine
at any time in the day. I called it Super Submitter by Randy The Unix
Robot. But it is long gone
Kevin writes
And second, How many sites per day can i submit per domain without getting
red flagged by the search engines?
Andy writes
this is a question I don't really know the answer to anymore. My guess
is one per domain. The key engine now is google and it usually finds
your pages anyways...most engines have a way to search them with something
like a link: to see if you are already in there...you might check that
before submitting.
example at google
link: www.foo.com
www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=link%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fwww.foo.com
Sometimes with google if
you submit one page that is linked to all the others...google will find
the otehr pages...you might try that...create a single page or two with
all your pages in html links and submit that one page and then see if
the spider finds all the pages within a month and this way you avoid
being red flagged.

AUTHENTICATION PATCH FOR
APACHE MOD_AUTH_MYSQL.C from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
I developed a tiny patch that your readers may be interested in. Like
myself many people use database authentication for their websites...basically
a nice and more efficient approach than using .htpasswd files. However
I noticed a slight race condition in the reigning MySQL/Apache authentication
module (named mod_auth_mysql). Basically if you have multiple sites
using this authentication method under the same apache server and mysql
daemon however each site uses a different database within the mysql
daemon...you run the risk of mod_auth_mysql not checking the correct
database for the username/password. The end result is potentially rejected
username/passwords and depending on the db architecture possible 500
errors. This was beginning to plague one of my clients who routinely
gets about 20-30 authentication requests a second.
--patch begin
457c457
< query = (char *) pstrcat(r->pool, "select ", auth_password_field,
"
from ", sec->db_name, ".", auth_table,
---
> query = (char *) pstrcat(r->pool, "select ", auth_password_field,
"
from ", auth_table,
523c523,524
< query = pstrcat(r->pool,"select count(*) from
",sec->db_name,".",auth_table,
---
>
> query = pstrcat(r->pool,"select count(*) from ",auth_table,
525a527
>
--patch end
if the above patch is applied
to the mod_auth_mysql.c file prior to
compiling it into apache, it should aleviate this race condition. A
simple
patch but effective =)

CRAIG-THE-PROGRAMMER AVAILABLE FOR SERVER ADMIN AND PROGRAMMING
Did you see that tip in the trix section called "authentication
path for apache mod_auth_mysql.c"? Well that is the fine work of
none other than Craig. I had a migraine looking at the patch...WOW...and
that is why I hire Craig since to him, this sort of thing is strawberry
short cake. He is the apache, mysql, and php machine. Craig-the-Prgammer
and I are old friends at this point and have worked on many adult and
mainstream projects together. Normally I try to horde all his time and
keep him hidden from public view since he often can get swamped with
code requests and server set up projects. Craig just sent me a note
and I thought would pass it along
Craig writes
I have a couple spots in my schedule to take on both emergency and flat
rate server administration as well as some website programming.
Andy writes
Craig is a master of php and mysql and excels in such projects. If you
need php4, mysql, apache, sendmail. firewalls and other programs loaded
on your linux and unix servers, he can generally do this sort of thing
blindfolded. He has worked for large porn operations in the past and
knows what it means to make both code and servers perform under heavy
load. Craig and I someday hope to release unto the world, the greatest
gamer portal ever! (all mysql and php based by the way)

for a custom project, or need server setup and administration, please

$99 BUYS YOU THIS SPOT IN
NEXT WEEKS NEWSLETTER
Well last week we have a pile of people email Dangerous Dan with "we
want that ad! Give me that ad! I need that ad!". Then they all
disappeared when we asked for the cash. Let me give you a little more
info to try and entice people about this lower spot. First, 150 webmasters
clicked the test ad I made a week ago. Now I would think that these
numbers are inflated since I was joking and having fun and asked people
to click so I would think a regular ad will not get as many clicks but
let's say for a minute that a regular ad gets 1/3 those clicks or 50
clicks. I would figure you would get once sale from 50 clicks. If you
sell content...it is not hard to sell $99 worth of content and that
buyer most likely will become a repeat buyer. If you have an affiliate
program, and get 2 signups...those webmasters need to send you approximately
4-6 signups ever to pay for that ad...this does not seem like a hefty
target.

world for $99. If you are interested in buying this spot and giving
it a try, please drop Dan or I am email. Dan's email is daniel@gammae.com
Dan and I certainly want to make money but we also want the people that
purchase ads to do well too and that is why we reduced this lower spot
to half price. We don't want 100 people to try the ad and say "that
ad sucked and burnt my coin"...instead we want a couple people
to try the ad and say "hey, this works for me, let me buy a month
or two". This way we enter into a longer term relationship where
it is WIN WIN.
