News Tips Trix
This is the almost weekly
SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2
and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains
information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for
the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of
nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends
to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to
it.

Give me some coffee. Wakey
Wakey...eggs and bakey. Did they ever say that goofy chant to you at
summer camp while Marge rang the triangle bell. Man, I hated summer
camp. :) I need to wake up today since I almost forgot that today is
SexSwap NEWS day! This week seems to be a week where porn is in the
news with the library filtering trials. Librarian's and others are asked
to testify. What is interesting is that people are finding out how silly
some of these laws are and how "being offended" is highly
subjected. One librarian said something like "we have these same
photos in books on sex education". --And then this begs the question...is
one photo ok, yet another bad, when they are of the same event....the
only difference is that one is in an educational manual while the other
is for masturbatory practices =) The internet is forcing Johnny Q Politician
and public to wake up and become educated.
In other news, it is becoming
more and more scary as ISPs are being required by some states to filter
illegal material. This is an imossible task and lawmakers are clearly
not understanding the internet. It is also very disappointing that they
are trying to force this task onto ISPs. If this trend continues, it
could unravel the internet since it is IMPOSSIBLE to block all illegal
materials...something can always get through. Why not just go after
the freaking crooks and leave the ISPs alone.
There are a few more stories
and rumors on why GOTO changed its name this week. Interesting reading
and none of them really make sense to me.
Jerry and I go HEAD TO HEAD
in paysite math. We actually wrote novels to each other but I decided
the arguments were becoming circular and so I have only included the
initial emails. Jerry's basic premise is that "everyone knows "per
sign up" programs are being shaved. Well this makes absolutely
no sense to me. Why would a crooked affiliate program shave "per
sign up" but not "re curring"? Yuo could argue that many
recurring programs use 3rd party billers and therefore are less likely
to have monkey business and I would have to agree....but comparing apples
to apples...I am pretty sure that scrubbing, massaging, or other illegal
accounting practices are consistant accross all programs. I alos believe
that they are a lot less rampant than many people believe. AND...at
the end of the damn day...all you have to do is TEST. You try a program
for 3 days and you pretty well know what you are going to make. Just
freaking test and you will find the site that best matches your traffic.
Jerry wants me to believe PERCENT RECURRING is the Bees Knees....well
I just don't buy that...I think all programs are pretty close. I really
just think that again "PER CLICK" "PER SIGN UP"
and "PERCENT RECURRING" are all the same thing! It is just
smoke and mirrors and different ways to sell the product. Business is
business and the laws of dupply and demand hold true. Well more on this
below. =)
I was wrong last week on
ASCII and HTML email. Several people wrote in that it is easy to do
and how to do it in the trix section. Great stuff.
on with the show!

INTERVIEW ON CNBC REVEALS
GOTO NAME CHANGE from Stephen
Stephen writes
In an interview I remember on CNBC the CEO of Overture/GoTo was asked
why they changed the name and he stated something along the lines of
that their partners (AOL, Yahoo, etc...) didn't like the name because
it sounded "to competitive" and that's why they decided to
change it.
As for Disney, GoTo won the
logo dispute with Go.com so I don't see where Disney would have any
power to force GoTo to change their name. If they thought they did they
would have done something back in 99.

HEAD TO HEAD ON PAYSITE MATH
from Jerry
Jerry sent me and email and it looks like he and I agree on almost nothing
=) Let the chips fall where they may
Jerry writes
Almost everyone getting pay-per sign-up is getting shaved like crazy
Fact recurring is the best
Andy writes
that's bullshit =) the reason is...because all I have to do is test.
A sign up is a signup, and they are worth almost the same in the long
run...so if you TEST and get 5 signups here and 5 there...then you can
pick. I go with the per sign-ups where I get the get the most daily
signups. I have tested recurring many times as well. There is no conspiracy
that I can see but I am sure there is a percentage fraud on both systems.
Jerry writes
I know several companys work off margins they set and they will make
sure they meet there number and shave members. A small % of members
that have been with me for over a year some 7,8,9 months.
Andy writes
YES. but just as many of your members that have also onlybeen with you
for 3 days. You have to know the average!
Jerry writes
You really can't do math on recurring billing. the avg is impossible
to many varibles. Now add trails memberships in the mix.
Andy writes
It is not impossible. I have already showed the formula 6,347 times
in past issue :) I do not differentiate trial from regular..it is much
simpler to consider them as one when calculating the average since most
signups are for the trial anyway. It is very easy to calculate.
Jerry writes
The Best thing you said is to change up the splash and members layout.Untill
it works the best. That will really increase your %
Jerry writes
I have read your paysite math. the recurring end of it is not 100% .Saying
2.5 avg stay? I do not agree.
Andy writes
I said "I am guessing it is 2.5" but I am not sure and every
site is different...that is just an example.
Jerry writes
Our net sales avg is higher then 2.5 x $34.95.net before webmaster
Andy writes
so are you saying that you pay 50%, and that the average customer is
staying at least 5 months since you pay out half and you are netting
2.5 x $35....am I correct? Or am I confused?
Jerry writes
I have seen the shaving with my own eyes. Third partys suck 15% but
you will get the sign-up. I know scrubbbing its the same with everyone.
Andy writes
The point is....I DON'T CARE IF THEY SCRUB...it is all MATH
If I get 7 sign-ups a day from a 'scrubber' and 4 from a 'non-scrubber',
then I go with the scrubber! I seriously doubt that as many sites scrub
as you feel do.
Jerry writes
Why do companys want the quick payoff they reap the recurring? they
make more money period.. If you on a recurring plan you own 50-65% of
the site. great site like www.karupspc.com recurring 4+ month avg. 40%
stay longer. pay-per is for the owner of the site. recurring is a real
buisness model that works and is better for the webmaster promoter..
the math only works after a certain test peroid. if you basis every
site with those avgs. they wont be the same, some way off.
Andy writes
I think you are way off on how long people are staying at karupspc.
It is $30 a month. If the average stay is 4 months....this means they
are making $120 per sign-up. Why in fred's green earth would this company
NOT pay $60 a sign-up and CORNER the webmaster market. I would be signed
up in a heart beat. Why not pay $50? or even $70 because they are making
$120. They would have 20,000 webmasters sending them traffic if they
paid $60 a sign-up and they MUST have good enough margins to pay 50%.
I'll tell you why they are not paying $60 a sign-up...because their
customers ARE NOT STAYING an average of 4 months. There is nothing wrong
with recurring billing. Many people love it and it is a much simpler
system for a webmaster on a budget to start. It is no more a real billing
model that "per sign up" or "per click". They are
all good models when fraud is kept to a minimum and the site know's
its numbers. The real benefit of recurring is that a webmaster does
not have to know his numbers since he just pays a flat percent and does
not have to worry if his math is correct or not.
Jerry writes
Shaving...I have seen the shaving with my own eyes.
Andy writes
the other problem with your arguement is....WHY would only evil webmasters
with PER SIGN UP programs turn to scrubbing and not with RECURRING?
It makes no sense that a crooked webmaster would not be crooked with
any program since they could hide the signup either way if they had
the power to.
Jerry writes
I said our average is higer then 2.5months x 34.95 (the cost of my site.)
then average the 6,7,8,9 .months members that is a small percent 3-4
months stays equal on the low end 52.42 for one sign-up after 3 months.
lets say the average payout is $50 more for the webmaster. 34.95 /2=17.47
x 3 months avg=52.42 avg paid for one sign-up
Andy writes
well let's say it is 3 months...we are splitting hairs. I believe you
that it is three. I gave an example of 2.5 and 3 is damn close to 2.5
=) My point when I say "2.5" is to shock webmasters that believe
it is 7 months. I totally think a sites average can be 3 months.
Jerry writes
you generate 10 sign-ups a month per sign-up you get 30x10x30=9k recurring
10 sign-ups avg 3- 4 months over a year you will have more. i'm 100%
positive about karups. they have a shit load of webmasters making $60
a signup
Andy writes
I just don't think they do, especially since they program is recurring
and very few people who play the recurring game know the math. The problem
is that EVERY webmaster needs to make $60 there to prove that is the
AVERAGE. I strongly, seriously, highly doubt that their average stay
is 4 months. :)
Jerry writes
all smart webmaster should join karups. there members stay at the site
because its value. they dont put up the same feeds as everyone thats
where the 2.5 avg. comes to play every site is the same . people wait
for there exclusive updatesits a real site people enjoy and webmasters
love to great content, and 1/500 conversions. try and see. why would
they cut there profit margin to make the same coin?$70 sign-ups? $120
PER sign-up. look there referal page almost ever tgp promotes them and
for a good reason $60 per sign-up
Andy writes
hee hee heee. This is what I constantly argue! In my opinion, it is
naive to think that Karup's is SO DIFFERENT that other porn sites. Tits
are tits. Every site I have ever spoken to has told me "our site
is way different, and our site has our own content". There must
be 5000 sites that match that description.
1. people join adults sites
as a spontaneous buy
2. people don't quit adult sites due to a laziness
3. there is very little difference in "avg stay" from site
to site.
Are their flames shooting
from your nose after reading this? Do you argee, disagree or in the
barrel? Send in your two cents and I most likely will add you to next
weeks letter. andy@lips.com

MORE INFO ON NEW GIGABLAST
SEARCH ENGINE from Dan
Dan writes
I first discovered gigablast when they started spidering my site and
the sites of some of the users of my cloaking software. There are very
active discussions going on about gigablast over on WebmasterWorld.com.
www.webmasterworld.com/forum6/857.htm and
www.webmasterworld.com/forum11/1070.htm
Here are some points:
1) Instant addition to spidering
que. You can submit your website and have
it added to the que for spidering. This doesn't necessarily mean it
will be
spidered instantly, but it does get spidered pretty quickly.
2) Instant addition to index.
Once your site is spidered, it will be in the
index.
3) Gigablast caches. If you
are cloaking, leave the Gigablast spider, IP
address 208.254.87.133 out of your spider list or you will be decloaked.
To
see a cached page in Gigablast, do a search and click on the "mirror"
link.
I believe the spider has no User Agent at present, but in the future
it will
be "gigabot".
4) Gigablast is not a commercial
engine. It is somebody's project. The
owner posts on Webmasterworld.com under the user name "mattdwells".
Here's
what he says about Gigablast:
"1) as most know this
is pre-beta
2) no i do not plan on "selling out". i'm not accepting any
venture capital,
but i may take out loans. i have a passion for information retrieval
and
there's a lot of projects i want to do once i have a large corpus of
documents.
3) i plan on having a decent beta in a couple of months
4) the current hardware i have should hold somewhere between 200-250
million
web page at about 80 queries per second.
5) i'm running off a T1 now (a major bottleneck), which, because it's
being
hammered by the spider, makes the website seem sluggish"
The above was quoted from
WebmasterWorld.com at
www.webmasterworld.com/forum6/857.htm
5) Gigablast's policy on
cloaking is not to bann it unless it's used to
mislead or abuse searchers. Good policy in my opinion.
6) Gigablast indexes the
meta keyword/description tags.

SECRETS OF ASCII AND HTML EMAILS from Stephen

You can send one email with both ASCII and HTML and if you format it
the right way email clients that can display HTML will show the HTML
and clients that can't will show the ASCII. I use MS Outlook and it
will allow you to have some ASCII and then you can start the HTML with
"<html>" and "<head>" tags. I have also
seen people use "Content-Type: multipart/alternative", "Content-Type:
text/plain", and "Content-Type: text/html" together.

Is what you need to look for is a mime multipart email. This allows

I'd answer this question.. If it's already been answered ignore me :)
(If anyone wants, I can write a Perl app to parse your logs looking
for redirects -- just email me ajhaines@jactstudios.com) This is merely
true if they're running Apache with combined logs..
Here's a redirected log entry:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [21/Mar/2002:00:04:18
-0500] "GET /error/404.html
HTTP/1.1" 302 301 "--CENSORED--" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows;
U; Win98; en-US;
rv:0.9.2)Gecko/20010726 Netscape6/6.1"
You'll see after the request
("GET /error/404.html HTTP/1.1") the status code is reported,
302 is a redirect, it's followed by the size of the data passed from
the server (in this case, our redirected URL is 301 bytes long). Hope
this helps.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
EVEN MORE SECRETS OF ASCII
AND HTML EMAILS from Craig the Programmer
Craig the Programmer writes
Actually it is possible to have a multipart message, one part with the
ASCII
text and one part with the HTML however it's actually kind of redundant
to
provide emails containing both HTML and plain text (ASCII). The main
reason
being readers that don't support HTML in the first place more often
than not
do not understand the concepts behind multi-part mime messages. So when
that message arrives in a non-compatible reader you get all the formatting
text, the ascii message and the HTML message (well the HTML source)
all
spewed out in one long plaintext email that looks rather ugly and confusing.
So you're better off picking
either one or the other, or giving your
subscribers a choice. I guess it would be hard to say whether ascii
or HTML
is a better route to go however if I had to look at this objectively
ascii
is the best route....
Reasons:
1 - Significantly faster
transmission time
2 - Unless it's from a known source, HTML messages are almost instantly
classified as spam by most people (I know I do)
3 - HTML based messages can be incredibly annoying to those who don't
have a
permaconnection. Assume you're on a 56k dialup...you download your messages
and disconnect. Now you're going through your mail and you come across
an
HTML advertisement that contains 5 or 6 photos, whether it be backgrounds,
borders, teasers whatever....now these images aren't transmitted with
the
message, they're obtained via the net when the message is read...so
what
happens? One of two things can happen...both of which can drive you
nuts
a) The images all show up
as broken, so you wind up with a very ugly
looking HTML page
b) Your email program tries to reconnect you to the net to download
these
images, so now you have this dialup box appearing on your screen, and
some
programs are horrible in that even if you select don't connect, you
get to
see the dialup box for every single potential image the HTML is trying
to
display.
At the same time though HTML
based mails provide you with the ability to
advertise to a reader visually rather than forcing them to have read
through
the entire sales pitch. Also when done properly you can have HTML based
emails do a variety of functions not normally available in a plaintext
message.

U.S. GOV AS A SOURCE OF CONTENT
from Steve
Steve writes
Here's something interesting, if you can work it: government data and
reports are not covered under copy rights. Basically, go to any government
website and you will find the following:
"All information presented
on these pages is considered public domain
and may be distributed or copied unless otherwise specified. Use of
appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested."
Example sites
navy
ad.usno.navy.mil/privacy.shtml
sec
www.sel.noaa.gov/privacy.html
hazmat
hazmat.dot.gov/warning.htm
nasa
lisar.larc.nasa.gov/
lisar.larc.nasa.gov/UTILS/copyright.cgi
Pretty cool, huh? Could be
a great resource...for instance, getting cool photos off of NASA's site,
etc. Lot's of other things you could do, like repackaging reports, etc.
The government is crazy and produces like crazy! I think all the companies
that make mapping software use Census' data, for example. Well, just
a thought...
Only thing is when they have
an outside contractor working on the data, then there might be issues
(that might happen with something like satellite mapping data that is
highly sensitive and they use that as an arguement to keep the public
away). You can always just send the agency an email. Or on a site like
the library of congress' American Memory where they have a ton of things
from all over the place. But...the idea is that a government employee
is a public servant, so what they produce should be in the public domain.

I took my cobra down to the
track...as the song goes...and then I was riddled once again with mechanical
problems as I attempt to sort out a new car. 1. lost radiator hose in
first ten minutes. 2. distributor locked at full advance constantly
and made it impossible to have dun. 3. distributor actucally shifted
without me knowing and made the car run like crap and oil was 240F.
Fixing all these small things as we speak.

DANGEROUS DAN AND GURU-O-GIF
SLASHING THIS SPOTS PRICE
yep. We originally had or three text based ads in the newsletter priced
at
TOP ad - $200
MID ad - $125
END ad - $175 (too high!) Slash that price!
It seems clear that the lower
ad is over priced since no one wants to buy it. And therefore
WE ARE SLASHING PRICES!
buy this ad spot for NOT $175, NOT EVEN $150. In any other day and age
you might even expect to pay $125.
HA we are cutting the price
of this bottom ad to...not even $100.
I am talking about $99 buys
you this ad that reaches 5000 webmasters each and every week as we discuss
tips, tricks and a bunch of BS. 4089 webmaster read the newsletter in
their email box each week and 854 read the newsletter online ...over
5000 a week.
BUT THATS NOT ALL
act now, and you can buy 4 ads and get ad number 5 FREE. A little less
than $400 and you have 5 weeks of ads running in classic SexSwap news.
DO YOU SELL CONTENT? HOSTING?
SERVERS? then this spot might work well for you.
DO YOU SELL FERARRI'S? well
then you probably only need to sell one to make some good coin...hee
hee haaaa. How do you spell Ferarri by the way?
We have cut prices since
we want people to do well and the ad was shown to be over priced. At
$99, I think it should work much better. We are fairly lenient on size
of add and amount of links etc. If you are interested in getting more
info on this spot or others, please email "Dangerous Dan"
daniel@gammae.com Dan can let you know current availability and payment
options. I think we can take just about anything (paypal, CC, check,
gold bullion)...maybe even food stamps :)
THIS SPOT AVAILABLE NOW ONLY

HOW MANY PEOPLE CLICK THE
BOTTOM AD IN SEXSWAP NEWS?
I have often wondered this myself. As you know, I am a strong believer
in testing. How can one find these things out? I woudl suggest testing.
Click here to see some of the rather interesting results. =)
