This is the almost weekly
SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2
and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains
information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for
the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of
nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends
to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to
it.

It seems to be a week full
of reader's comments. The new merchant account fees have readers mad
as a hive of bees. It seems a little unfair to single out "adult"
companies with an "extra fee". I can see that if it was shown
that such sites have higher chargebacks etc, then perhaps it is just...but
even if this is true...why not charge that extra fee for sites with
"high chargebacks". I think adult is just an easy target.
Lots more comments on this below. This week I have the second pro-level
version of Steve's bid.pl. A fine piece of code for all you coders out
there. I start off today with banter on the 3 key stat numbers that
all webmasters should have when driving a big paysite down the road.
These three numbers are like your speedometer, water temp, and RPM and
keep you optimally cruising. There was a very large child porn bust
yesterday and we have several links to the stories. I am glad the FBI
is able to infiltrate and shut down these net based groups. Mel writes
in with a scoop on why he believe goto changed its name...interesting
reading. Jill writes in about a new search engine that is indexing on
the fly...add your url and you are instanly in! The bad news is that
they are using a blacklist and most adult sites are on it. I had flames
out my nostrils this week when I read a slanted article on wired.com
regarding Users not willing to pay for content...my scathing rebuttal
below.
better than a poke in the
eye with a sharp twig...let's roll
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3 "PRO-LEVEL" PAYSITE
MATH NUMBERS
after the last month of paysite talk, I started thinking a little more
about the numbers I would want to steer a paysite. I always was in love
with "avg stay" but there are two other numbers that I think
are also very important and I want to thank Eric for writing in with
these 3 items last week. I don't call them but the same names, but agree
with their importance.
1. SIGN-UP RATIO
a simple number that tells you "how good is my front end".
You take your total unique hits to the site, and divide that by your
sign-ups for a day or longer. If you get 10,000 unique hits a day, and
you get about 10 sign-ups a day, you then have a 1/1000 sign-up ratio.
This number by itself is not that useful because it is difficult to
compare apples to apples. I can't count how many times a person has
said to me "join my site and you will see a 1:200 sign-up ratio"..so
I join and hammer it with my blind traffic. Low and behold, 1:5000.
There are so many factors at work. Type of traffic, type of banners,
type of niche. Therefore I don't hold much value in one webmaster saying
his sign-up ratio is better than anothers since they are apples and
oranges. What the SIGN-UP number is GREAT for, is to TEST TEST and RE
TEST that site FRONT END. You have a 3 or 5 pages on your sites that
are your sales force...these get people to JOIN. Every 3-6 months, you
might want to change them and TEST a new front end...for 2-3 days, and
see if you can improve on the 1:1000 ratio. If you improve, continue
with the new front end. If you decline, go back to the original. I personally
believe that there is no better way to make more money on a pay site
than by working on this. If you can improve your front end 10%, you
have just added 10% to your income. AND, just like banners, it is shocking
how various banner have different click rates.
2. AVG STAY
you know I love to babble about this until everyone is blue in the face.
This number helps you decide if the BACK END of your site is good. The
number takes time to calculate. It is also a little harder to change
the look and feel of a back-end to a site. If you do test a new back-end,
the trouble is that testing would take 2-3 months. I still think it
is a god number to know since you can use it to gauge what you can pay
for ads and you can use it to determine your payouts etc. You can also
track it to see if people are staying longer and less long over time
and plan accordingly. I have no proof, but I tend to think the new concept
of letting people sign-up for one of your paysites, and then give them
access to 5 of your paysites, adds to avg stay. This might be something
that could be tested in the long run.
3. JOINS TO RECURRING CONVERSION
RATIO
I really never gave this number much thought until Eric mentioned in
last week. This is an excellent number. If you have 20 people sign-up
for your paysite today, and in 5 days, 5 of those become recurring members,
you have a 25% CONVERSION ratio. Now this is a terrific tool to give
you some of the info that #2 would take months to give you. This is
your guide to your BACK END. If people like your members area, they
will go from TRIAL to MONTHLY...it is that simple. I think again it
would be very wise to test BACK ENDS every 3-6 months. I am not saying
altering content....content is constant. I am saying alter the way you
present the content. Maybe you test a java down left hand side menu
one month. Then maybe test a frames menu. Then maybe test a dark and
gloomy backend with white words...then test a fresh and clean white
backend with black text. How you preset your pictures, video, streams,
newsgroups will influence the percent of people who convert to full
customers.

COMMENTS ON GOTO from Darren
Darren writes
I actually went to goto yesterday and thought the same thing. Its just
easier to type in goto. What morons! Actually the name change reminded
me of the Simpons episode when Homer was designing a car for his brothers
automobile company and the marketing execs picked a greek mythology
name for the vehicle...that the average joe would know nothing about.
OH THE GOTO HUMANITY from
Brien
you think that all the idiots would have been vanquished from the net
business long ago...but as you can see with the goto redirect, they
are not. I'd give my left arm, nut and hand to get the goto traffic
that they are losing. Why build up a name and idea and then change it
just for fucks sake?? Oh the humanity....
RUMORED SCOOP ON WHY GOTO'S
NAME CHANGED from Mel
Mel writes
I see alot of references made to GoTo.com and their new name. Well I
have the scoop on why they had to drop their name. I am good friends
with one of the big boys at the other Big pay-per-click search engine
and he tells me that GoTo.com had to change their name because of trademark
issues that Disney brought against GoTo. So at the end Disney got their
way. I do not have all the details but this is the summery. So I guess
you can share this info with all the inquiring minds.
COMMENTS ON GOTO from Guru-O-Gif
These are very interesting threads. I have no way to prove or disprove
Mel's rumor...it does sound logical to me. Let's pretend that it is
true and Disney's lawyers forced GOTO to change names. If this is true,
why the hell would you pick a name like "OVERTURE"! It is
8 characters and hard to spell and means nothing to Joe Guy. There has
to be 1000 four letter domains available for $50k or less that would
of been much more cool. Maybe GOTO was about to IPO and got scared this
would hold things up by rangling with lawyers.
And another thing...even
if you give up on a name, I doubt they would legally be forced to drop
a redirect since there used to be one on those pages for some time.
How many times have we seen great internet sites DESTROYED by acquisitions
of Fortune 500 companies. Let's names a couple

You can't tell me users will

I pay for content and wish there was more. One other note before I forget...I
think many mainstream pay models are still a year or two behind adult.
I find many do not know how to ask for the sale. Porn asks for the sale
6 ways from sunday =) Two sites above that I really like are Wallstreet
Journal and FordMuscle. They use a great teaser system and I personally
feel this works well...just like sample adult pics. Wallstreet journal
gives you the first paragraph of every story and then when you click
to read, you get asked for the sale. FordMuscle is very similar. They
write 6-8 page reviews on an automotive topic and give the first page
away free..when you click to read the next page, you are immidiately
asked for the sale. Here is a great example...AND they even offer the
classic adult "30 day free trial" ...Well Done!

MORE COMMENTS ON BILLING
MATH from Eric
eric writes
regarding: per sign up...I agree - there's piece of mind in not having
to worry about someone "scamming" you, and I don't necessarily
disagree with you that per-signup will make you more money in the long
run, but I think it's dependent on the website in question.
andy writes:
certainly. I agree. Perhaps per sign up will go the way of clicks and
they will be linked to quality of traffic. I hope I have not lead people
to believe that per sign up makes more...I don't think it does...I think
they are even. I prefer getting my money up front. Per sign up accelerates
payment to the traffic sender.
eric writes
If a website's converted sale retains at anything greater than 2.75
months (at $29.95), you're going to make more money with 50/50 than
you are with the $35 flat rate, though you're taking a bigger risk (money
upfront vs money over a period of time). Anything less than that [which
is probably the case 85% of the time], and the revshare webmaster loses
money.
andy writes:
I have to agree
eric writes
I think another issue is webmasters sometimes will take less money just
to know that they aren't getting "screwed" (i.e. taking $25
over a period of time knowing they aren't getting taken advantage of
vs getting $30 upfront but never knowing how bad they're getting shaved).
andy writes:
I have said this in previous letter many a time. I will ALWAYS take
less to be paid early. This is a risky business and I doubt I know anyone
who has never been ripped off. Because of this, I will always take a
lower accelerated payment over a later, but larger payment.
eric writes
As a paysite owner, I find that it's vital information to tell me the

month rebills), as well as subsequent months (2,3,4,5,6,etc) for both

decreasing, maintaining members.

COMMENTS ON NEW MERCHANT
FEES AIMED AT ADULT from Steve
I used to have a dirt world business in a mall. No adult stuff. They
first made me buy a credit card terminal that was supposed to be the
greatest but I later found out it was not compatible with any other
terminal. This means that you can't switch to another bank. Very sneaky,
and a waste of a lot of money.
Then I wanted to process
on line and they had me do a rent to own of the software, and when I
had done paying it for years, even though I had paid it all off, because
I couldn't find the origional disk, I had to pay them like $300. I figured
out these guys were a total ripoff after about 3 months, but what I
had to do to keep my credit was keep paying them even though I found
another much much better bank and merchant account. It took me 3 years
to get rid of them totally.
They also advertise a lot
and do very well in targeting the market of "newbie" business
owners who are just the kind of people that don't know what they are
really offering. It takes a little while to learn the ropes with credit
card processing, and they take advantage of that. Altogether I lost
about $3000 from their "services".
There are many banks out
there that want your business and are fair. You just have to shop around
a little bit and negotiate. I processed 1.5 million dollars in credit
card sales one year so I know what I am talking about here.

COMMENTS ON ADULT MERCHANT
EXTORTION FEES from Kendra
Kendra writes
This months statment from IPayment they announced that in addition to
the extra fee, and the $500 a year renewal fee, they are increasing
their take .02-.05%
When i joined CC services
and got my merchant account, doesnt the contract we signed with them
protect us? Would the fact that they are targeting one specific market
and forcing unexceptable fees with intentions of driving them out of
business be considered a form of discrimination? This is not being imposed
to other industires, and yet we are expected to pay $1000 2 weeks
prior to taxes being due, done by Automatic Transfer. I spoke to my
sales rep with EZIC who said that when he contacted CC services they
are infact weeding out the fly by nights and blah blah blah.. it was
simply too easy for people to get a merchant account.
I dont know but this sounds
like discrimination and im wondering if there is a way to fight this?
Whos to say that next year we wont have another fee on top of this?
That our annual fee becomes $700 or $1000? If CC services is passing
along the extra fees and are so concerned, then it should be imposed
upon ALL MERCHANTS not just a single group.

ASCII AND HTML EMAIL from
Josh
Josh asks
i've been asked to try to find a way that I can send out our co's mailings
in both HTML & ASCII forms, so that clients that support HTML will
get HTML, and clients that only support ASCII will get the ASCII version.
Is that Possible??
Andy writes
Not that I know of. I do not think there is a way for the letter to
determine this. You have to determine it manually and break the list
in two. This is we try and do it. The way I prefer it done is to send
everyone the text based version ASCII and then ask somewhere in the
email "click here if you prefer to get the HTML version of this
email" and then gather the names and alter them in the file to
send the HTML fancy version. My experience has been that ASCII letters
get read more...sure they are not as pretty...but more people can open
them...they are smaller, and people tend to read them more.
So the best way I know is
to somehow split the list in two. Everyone can read ascii so I would
send that as the default. Then ask people to click to join the second
group who wants the fancy prancy version.
