News Tips Trix
This is the almost weekly
SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2
and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains
information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for
the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of
nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends
to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to
it.

Hello out there, we're on
the air. This has to be called the WEEK OF GOOD NEWS. Man, finally those
Wall Street types have been reading SexSwap news and see clearly now
...hee hee haaa. I am almost worried that there is a good news craze
occuring! Today in IBD, at leat 3 positive economy headlines...check
em out
www.investors.com/editorial/
1. Optimism Soars In IBD/TIPP
Poll
2. Q2 Business Profits Seen Rising
3. PC Sales Outlook Gets Brighter
give me my news like this
any day of the week! This sort of news lights the small fire that keeps
the stock market burning. Let me check in on the indexes here
bigcharts.marketwatch.com/
DOW 10,500 and NAS 1,860.
We are very close to Dow 11 grand and NAS 2 large. These are very big
mental hurdles and I think if we can hit them in the next 3 months,
then the year will be a great one. If we hit them in 2 weeks, well then
we are back to irrational exuberance.
I think this year we are
going to see mainstream internet advertising continue to rebound and
prices rise. We are also seeing the evolution of pricing models as Google
joins Goto in the per click business. I am still MAD that those Harvard
MBA's at Overture destroyed the brand name GOTO. I will go to my deathbed
calling it GOTO. Overature. Do you know I even spelled it wrong and
could not find it for a half hour the other day. I spelled it
www.overature.com
I could of even spelled it
like
www.oviture.com/
no how freaking hard is it
to spell GOTO ? WHY WHY WHY. AND try this with me. See if this make
flames shoot out of your adult webmaster nose
www.goto.com/
a DEAD link. My Word! How
many hits are being tossed into the TRASH each and every day! Very sad.
At least do a DNS redirect. At least do an apache redirect. At least
use a meta refresh. At least have a java refresh! Aaaaaaaaaauuuggghh!
You wizards are buring traffic! =) Am I the only one that thinks this
is foolish? email me to join the rant if you so desire.
This week there are many
a story...let me see if I can touch on a few points. Steve must of emailed
me 685 times thjis week :) as he researched cross referencing top search
words with prices paid at goto. What is very slick is that he came up
with a couple of awesome perl scripts that do this automatically. I
have the simple one in this weeks and then I think I will add his pro
master perl script to next weeks. Damn fine researching script tools
if you ask me.
This week there are also
some rumblings about merchant accounts hammering on adult webmasters
which seems rather unfair since I believe the default rates are similar
in both industries. There is also news of a new interenet just for kids.
It still has a pile of hurdles but so far I am liking the idea.
Huge news this week as AOL
will drop IE browser and might even buy redhat! This is some radical
bad ass cool thinking on their part. Also some very interesting stories
on new credit cards that are actually debit cards at available at drug
stores now from Greg and how they do not work in adult sites that rebill.
I find these cards to be very interesting and a great way to buy stuff
online when you are not sure. Greg has lots of interesing testing about
them.

POSSIBLE ADULT MERCHANT ACCOUNT
SHAKEDOWN from Tom
Tom writes
I was wondering if you had read my previous e-mail and it's attachment
that I sent to you about a week ago concerning the Mastercard or rather
Cardservice Intl extortion letter I received? Seems they are claiming
Mastercard is now requiring all adult merchants to "register"
with them, and pay a non-refundable registration fee of $1000, or lose
their merchant account.
Anyone else you know get
one of these demand letters? I realize that they can pretty much do
anything they want but this very much feels like a gun to the head extortion
to me.
guru-O-gif writes:
this sure does sound like extortion to me. The singling out of adult
sites to make extra money. Perhaps there are higher costs in monitoring
the activity of an adult site but I tend to doubt that and maybe it
is the % chargebacks but from other articles, I think adult is inline
with mainstream. If anyone has additional comment son this, please email

HOUSE APPROVES WEB FOR KIDS
from Greg
This looks like some very good news from Greg. Rather that try and make
the adult side of the net go to a certain domain, instead, make a web
suffix that is just for children's sites. I think this looks like a
pretty good idea and I hope it flies.
www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/internet/03/08/children.internet.ap/index.html
Greg writes
The story on the new domains for kids only content is gonna be a hot
one. I work in animation/comic books/toys. It's a dirty business and
this is the opportunity these bums will want to divert parent's dollars
to targeted properties. It's a bs scam. They're about as interested
in protecting kids as Osama Bin Laden is about attending the next Martha
Stewart show. With the sex predators out there they'll jump on this
new web faster than Anna Nicole Smith on a rich decrepit old man.

BLOCKED CC'S AND DEBIT CARDS NOW AVAILABLE from Greg
Greg writes
Here's another matter of concern I ran into: Blocked CCs! Here's the
story. Lotsa webmasters were complaining about losing rebills. My rebills
are strong yet I decided to find out what the dilly was yo! By sheer
accident (actually part of my evil plan) I stumbled onto 'Instant Master
Cards' that anyone can by at Rite Aid. You put some money on the card
with a $9activation fee and call the activation number and they actually
let you put whatever name and address on the card! How fuckin' stupid
is this! They 'trust' you're 18 and over. Buwahahahahaaaaa! (still part
of my evil
plan).
Lo and behold I test it out
and (again part of my evil plan) I find out that the cards are blocking
'any' recurring services! Especially IBill. I run around trying to find
out what's up and yep, that's what's goin' on. If your site has recurring,
the card will be declined. You gotta go through hoops to to get access
to a site for a one time fee (no rebills!) so guys are using their cards
anyway they can. Beware! There's more to this than meets the eye!
this thing is getting funnier
and funnier! I think I've found the big loophole on how kids are getting
into porn sites with CC cards. This entire scenario of me trying to
get this cc to work on an IBill site is worthy of a cartoon in itself.
I've answered your questions below. I'll fill you in on how it all turns
out.

WHAT ARE TOP SPONSORS MAKING?
from james
James writes
I have one comment regarding the comment made by one of your submitters.."Recently
Bangbus said their best day was 1,000 trials" If the above statement
is true I will eat my hat... The only sponsors doing that volume is
the likes of MaxCash, CEN, and maybe CE...
Andy writes
I just had this exact math debate a week ago and I see it a little differently.
I conservtively estimate that the average user is spending 2 months
on BangBus. This means that the life of that customer is worth $5 +
$25 + $25 = $55. Now to get what that is in a year I do a $55 per cusomte
X 1000 a day X 365 days in a year = $20M. Now this number is high. Remember
that in the story they said that "they just had their biggest day
ever". This means the site has had on fire growth rates. I would
then chop that number in half because of growth and you get $10M. Do
I think BangBus is doing $10M gross a year? I think there is a very
good chance. There are probably 20 or more adult sites doing $10M a
year gross or more. I would easily rank BangBus in the TOP20 of all
adult sites...mainly do to their current popularity. I can't sure a
TGP without stumbling onto their site at every turn. Either they or
their affiliates dominate TGPs.
James writes
I make this statement by going by expose... Everyday we spend hours
on adult sites or various reasons, be it checking affiliate links, fraud
checking, research etc, etc.. Now we are always seeing maxcash , ce,
cen banners all over the place, however only within the last 4 months
have bangbus and their other sites started appearing more frequently...
I am not saying they are running a bad program, far from it, we send
them traffic, and would send more if they paid per sign-up :( What do
you think the top sponsors get in sign-ups per day... I think the top
ones do 1000-2000 a day in trials... Shit this is 2002 not 1998-99 :)
Andy writes
A few years ago, I was fairly sure there were 3 or more sponsors doing
$40M a year or more. There were magazine articles and other statements
that lead me to believe this. Most of the three I thought have gone
under or evolved into something new. The adult market continues to shrink.
I would bet there are still 3 or more sites doing $25M a year or more
and this is 2500 signups a day

NAME YOUR UNIQUE ! from James

Drum Roll Please.....

Far We Have..
Qualified Unique
2nd Page Unique
Per-Qualified Unique
Hosts
When asked by someone "What
is a unique" I feel like saying, whatever I fucking want it to
be... :)
Andy writes
I used to have sponsors a year or two back...who offer "per sign
up" or "per click"...you know I took the signups =) and
they track my clicks too...I would send them 9000 hits a day...I know
these are unique....their count? 450 unique hits....HOLY SHAVE FEST
BATMAN =) And this is why the numbers mean nothing and testing is everything...there
are so many smoke and mirror games.

The company that puts em out is IGEN. They give you an IGEN Master Card,
you call the # on the card and then they activate it. They SAY you can
purchase online with it BUT they DON'T tell you they have restrictions
to purchases from places like IBill. I called IBill and told them what
happened and they sent me to their analysts who gave me two comical
answers! None of them know what the heck they're doing but I'll wait
24 hours just to see what happens. With cc card options like this, people
have an easier way to shop online BUT if the cc companies have restrictions
like no rebills and block certain companies like IBill it may be good
for security but they're misleading consumers who think they can shop
anywhere for anything and we may be losing sales. READ THE FINE PRINT

COOKIE ERROR EXPLANATION
from Ben
Ben writes
Just thought about it..... Is those stats come from sexswap then the
reason the nocookie rate is so high is because it's classified as a
"3rd party cookie" by IE6... This means it gets blocked. So
overall the normal cookie rate is still around 10 but 3rd party cookies
are dead. So that means the 71% number doesn't affect places like CCBill,
only cookies on images or iframes.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
MORE ON NO COOKIES from Ben
I'm still tracking 10% nocookies. However I do expect there to be a
problem when so many webmasters are promoting cache/history/cookie "evidence"
removing programs. These programs remove cookies. Seeing as CCBill and
other processors track with cookies it means we are all losing sales
because people are cashing in on quick bucks from the program sales.

I agree with you about simple is better and not to use Java and Cookies
on your site. However I don't think that is the jist if that thread.
They are saying that the
sponsors use Java and Cookies to track signups and webmasters are loosing
signups because cookies are disabled by default on newer browsers.
A webmaster can make the
simplest site possible but has no control over how things work on the
sponsor's end. Maybe the sponsors even like it if signup tracking doesn't
work so great.

Also, any thoughts on the best fonts for display work? And how about
best fonts printed vs. computer? Here's a pretty good site for type
news, although I never look at it:

guru-O-gif writes
well here are my opinions...but they are just opinions from playing
on the web and formerly owning a sign shop. For reading...like a paper
or magazine, I think fonts with small serifs like 'times' are easiest
to read and I am not positive, but we might be able to read them faster...I
will have to check. This is how most paperbacks are written. On the
internet, the whipsy tails are useless and get blurry and are harder
to read so I find arial and helvetica and those straight thin fonts
are best and easiest to read...maybe due to screen limitations. For
signs..you need big and bold. The favorite classic sign store font is
Antique Olive Black. It is such an awesome font because you can stretch
the crap out of it in any direction. It is very easy to read at any
distance. My other favorite for signs is Helvetica Inserat. This is
a bold and narrow version of helvetica and used on lots of road signs.

setup the network and firewall rules... They don't have DHCP support
for cable modems yet, but I emailed the author... and he stated they
would have DHCP built in within a few weeks.
I have seen other similiar

up'.That'll put the fear of Vader in their asses I assure you. We have
to do this exactly right with the right references. The copy is small,
smaller than most average disclaimers but at least we'll have it at
the ready. Nobody wants their harddrives or homes raided cause some
shitheel has been using their computers/facilities to rip us off. The
rest of the web lives on the troubleshooting of the pornmeisters and
if we handle this, coin will explode for all of us.
Lotta webmasters bitched
and complained but I had to let em' know to pursue that crook. In one
day I nailed a group of the crooks and gave a reward to the surfer who
turned em' in. I netted $15k from that bust. Fastest money I ever made.
Can't go into more details cause the case is settled but I can tell
you how we did it. It PAYS to go after the hoodlum and it PAYS to reward
your customers and surfers who pinch em'.

ANY TIPS ON STARTING A PAYSITE?

I'ld really like to know what you and the SexSwap experts have to say
about starting one's own paysite nowadays. With technology and tactics
changing so often, it's good to keep on top of things. What pros and
cons do you and the guys have to say?

GOTO BIDS AND SCRIPT from
Steve
Steve writes
Here's a list of bids on goto terms...I used the 7search terms and fed
it through the goto bid tool. Well, it is much more what I would expect.
The xls file is just the top price for each term, the zip file has all
the bids (it did pick up some junk, since I was matching on "$"
and if it was anywhere else on the page...)
trix.sexswap.com/goto_bids.zip
Since I fed the 7search terms
into it, it might be skewed, depending on if the 7search terms were
skewed. I would imagine not, but just thought I would mention it. You
could run a dictionary through it, or any list of words to see what
the results are. But I agree...a ton of casinos on top. Probably the
more interesting results are in the middle. Pretty wild what people
are paying for a click, I wonder if anyone is making money on it. I
checked a webmaster board and they suggested starting from the 10 place
on a term and working up while checking your profit as you went, so
that might be a good approach.

DISAGREEMENT WITH YOUR PAYSITE
MATH from Eric
Eric writes
Someone from GFY introduced me to the newsletter so I'm a new reader,
and I like everything so far but I have a point of contention with the
latest letter discussing BangBus.
When debating Michael, you
forgot to consider the trial-to-conversion ratio (DOH!). You "assumed"
that 1000 trials would convert to 1000 recurring members, when we all
know that's not the case. Michael's numbers were spot-on.
Important ratios (especially
for 50/50 partners to consider):
-Initial conversion
-Trial-to-recurring
-Length of retention
And to Michael who complains
of $3 returns on trials that's an 8.5% return on money. I know many
webmasters who plug that return in as desirable. And if you just decrease
the costs a little, increase the conversion, increase the retention,
etc there's money to be made.
Guru-Of-Gif write:
Eric, yes I understand what you are saying, but there are many ways
to skin a human. I do NOT ignore the trial to conversion number =) it
is already built into the equation automatically. My formula averages
the entire group of signups and does not split them into "trials"
and "converts". You certainly could create other formulas
based on splitting the signups into two group, but I don't know if that
formula exists...I will have to think about it. You might then offer
webmasters a two tier pay system. I have not seen a two tier pay per
sign up system yet (but they probably exist and would be new). Since
many programs pay PER SIGN-UP (no separation of convertions from trials),
then you have to find the AVERAGE stay of both groups and this is what
my numbers reveal. If you did have a two tier payout system, the numbers
might be impressive for advertising. I am pulling numbers out of my
butt..perhaps $5 per trial and $45 per conversion.
Eric responds:
I'm not sure I understand this - perhaps you could explain this formula
in your next newsletter (or at least allude to it via a reference if
you've already previously described it). This is the way I figure things
on a $2.95 trial recurring to $29.95, with a conversion rate of 1:375
and a trial to conversion ration of 66% (incidently these are the rates
at Wild Web Amateurs):
10,000 hits @ 1:375 = 26.6
sales
26.6 sales x $2.57 ($2.95
* .87) = $68.36
26.6 x 66% (converting) =
17.56 sales * $26.06 ($29.95 x .87) = $457.55
So total revenue for first
billing period is $525.91, and then you begin figuring in retention.
But my point is that if you're only converting 40% (average?) from trial
to recurring, your revenue will only be $345.64 for the same numbers.
How can your formula take into account the different rates? Actually,
Elite Cash has a two-tier payment system - you get a small fee upfront
for the initial signup, plus a fixed fee for the life of the customer.
Guru-Of-Gif responds:
I only look at two numbers... new or fresh JOINS for a given day and
then RECURRING bills for a certain day. I do not seperate the recurring
into "recurring from the join" or "recurring from the
recurring". Therefore you get an overall average stay. Yes some
people quit at the end of the trial, and yes some people quit after
a month and yes some people quit after 9 months. I want to know that
whenever I get a single NEW signup, what is the average stay of that
signup. Now I certainly would enjoy knowing the "how long"
a person who converts from trial to recurring stays. I think this would
be of benefit for two tier systems as I stated above.
I think that many of the
math formulas are "old school" since the 90% of new webmasters
just offer the simple 50% split. This allows them the luxury of not
worrying about "what a sign up is worth". They have also done
a good job in convincing Johnny Q Webmaster that he will make more money
on a 50% split system than a per sign up, when you know I believe this
is not the case =) Because of this, more newer programs track the percent
of signups going from trial to rebilling, where I find this number not
to be of that much value. It is interesting, but I am not sure what
it tells me. Perhaps it tells me the quality of my pay site internals...the
better I entertain a person, the more likely he is to stay...YES...this
is definitely a very good use for that number and why to track it.

LEGALITY OF BROWSER HYJACKING
from Mel
Mel asks
My question is about a java script that can be placed on a web page
that automatically changes Internet Explorer's home page setting to
what ever url that's specified in this script. The question is: are
there any legal ramifications or liabilities by using this script?
Andy writes:
well I will tell you right now what I think. I think these are at least
immoral and most likely will be considered illegal by the FTC in the
near future. This is the altering of people's computers without their
permission...there is no way on earth this can be legal and I personally
would never even think about doing it since it is just a matter of time
before a person is sued blind or faces FTC charges. This is a great
question and I don't think US based sites will get away with this much
longer.
