This is the almost weekly SexSwap News-Tips-Trix and it goes to all members of SexSwap and SexSwap2 and AsianSwap and GaySexSwap and SexSwap2000 Banner Exchanges. It contains information on SexSwap, Porn, Tips'n'Trix, and software reviews for the adult webmaster. I perform all literary stunts without the use of nets, safety-cables, spell checkers, or grammar fixers, and this tends to leave the reader in a state of bewilderment...you will get used to it.

I want to get something out of the way here that is important. Lately I have been getting continuous complaints regarding an old sexswap contributor named "Asher". You old time readers will remember him as "Asher the Java Master". I have added a warning to the 15 sexswap newletters in which he contributed. Here is what that warning says:

WARNING
MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING ASHER AND TRIXSCRIPT.COM

Sexswap is not associated with TRIXSCRIPTS.COM . Trixscripts is a site owned by Asher aka Asher the Java Master. Asher was once a frequent contributor to SexSwap news from 1999-2001. He donated 10-15 scripts over a 2 year period. In return he got plugs for his site 'trixscripts'. In mid 2001, I started receiving complaints from friends and colleagues with regards to Asher's scripts and his business practices. Asher then sent in a script for the newsletter that a sexswap member decompiled, and inside was a type of trojan virus that advertised his sites. He argued that the script was an honest mistake. This was the beginning of the end. Since june of 2001, I have received numorous complaints regarding Asher and trixscripts. I have asked Asher to remove all links and references to sexswap on his site but he has refused to do so. I felt compelled to add this warning on the 10-15 issues in which he is mentioned. It seems that Asher has followed the path of Anakin Skywalker and turned to the dark side. I find this very disappointing since he had personally written me some excellent scripts in the early years.

Now that I got that warning out of the way, back to the hella stories. =) I'd say the biggest thing happening this week is the huge amount of good economy stories. GDP up, record Xmas sales, huge drop in dot com Feb layoffs, Consumer confidence good, and venture capital flying once again. In california, home sales are fierce...it is not rare to hear of 1 and 2 day home sales and multiple offers. Prices are on fire. Just one great story after another and I think this is finally the end of the low stock bottom. Time will tell. I am expecting a solid summer in the market and a great fall. It really seems to be a week full of news and the MORE NEWS section is overflowing today =)

This week seems to be the week that everyone and his dog figured out how to beat Google. Lots of links to these stories. Google will have to re write some of its code now and play the spy vs spy game that we all play every day :) They gotta write a few more filters and get up a little earlier in the morning.

Jill and I were babbling on ICQ this week and I thought for sure we had hit Texas T...black gold. Jill told me about a way to buy browser hits for a low yearly fee. We pursued the idea as far as we could and it ended up being fools golds....more on this below.

A few webmasters wrote in with great comments on paysite math and granting access to multiple sites. This is a curious concept. I don't have any hard data on it but pretend for a moment that you have bought a paysite membership and you can either have a) a giant vat of pics in every niche in one great site or b) a smaller site BUT you have the secret password to now enter the other 7 sites that the umbrella company owns. When I get tired of blonde babes, I can go after lesbo lover, and then naught house wives. I personally tend to think that I would like b). Even though the content is exactly the same! It just feels like you are getting a better deal. Am I right or wrong on this? And therefore this might be one way to keep people longer.

One more interesting thing just came up. Please email me if you have ideas on this issue. Greg wrote in asking about java and cookies on sites. There seem to be a few people posting that these are money robbers...I have to agree and have always felt that the plainest and simplest code wins in the end. I have no exact testing proof on this but I have just have always felt that way. More on this below.

The other story that keeps catching my eye this week is the "We Hate PayPal". PayPal is doing like NS and locking accounts if there is a dispute. People are losing their revenue streams and there is a classaction lawsuit quickly building huge steam.

get out the India Pale Ale Albert...its time for the show :D

REAL WORLD NUMBERS ON RECURRING BILLING from Joe
Joe writes
Noticed you've been working the numbers when it comes to recurring billing. We've been running Swing Connection in one form or another, under a couple of different domains, basically in the same format for about 5 years now. It would have to fall under the niche category I suppose (swingers personal ads + adult content). We started recurring billing about 2 years ago. It was strictly one-time payments before then. Here are the actual recurring billing percentages over 2 years...

44% of memberships are cancelled after the intial purchase.
56% are rebilled at least 1 time

Of the 56% who are rebilled, 73% are rebilled 2 or more times total.

The average member pays for an initial signup and then is rebilled 2.5 times before cancelling for a total of 3.5 sales. In our case the monthly membership is $9.95 and the average total amount spent by each member before cancelling is $35.27. Just our personal experience. Hope it provides some insight for you.

FINDING 3RD PARTY CREDIT CARD PROCESSORS by Joel

I've been having a great deal of difficulty finding a credit card processor that suits my needs. I was wondering if you'd be able to assist me in finding one that might be better suited than iBill. I'm currently using iBill for my Content site, using a different
subaccount for each item. This unfortunately doesn't allow me to use a shopping cart, it also requires me to have static pricing (I'm not able to offer discounts for bulk purchases).

GIVING ACCESS TO MULTIPLE PAYSITES from Bill
Bill writes
When I first went multiple, all of my sites were different. There was the first one that had a touch of everything, the second was gay, the third was teen, and the fourth was for women (actually another members area in my gay keeping hardcore out). I had it setup so that you could join one site for 29.99 or all 4 for 49.99. I would have to say about 25% went for the all 4. What I got mostly was couples joining all four. Something for him and something for her. I would market the Elite site to couples, bi-curious males, and guys looking to sign up for a site, and, if they got caught, could use the old well I got you one too honey.

As far as giving them away with a sign up to one site, I say don't do it. In my members section I would try and sell them my other sites or resell them an elite upgrade. I would say 50% of my members were eventually members of elite or of more than one site.

I would really like to hear the views of other webmasters on their experieces with paypal. I have been using paypal for 2 years+, never had a real problem. Only once when i got a chargeback, they asked me to verify the transaction by sending them shipping evidences. I was selling intangible products so obviously they don't accept my explaination. I admit i'm at fault too for selling to an unverified member although i must say their customer support suck ass. They give you slow BS emails most notably, refer to our Terms & Agreement blah blah. I'm still using them for selling though i'm considering if i should continue after i saw all the BS in the link above. Will really like to hear everyone's views on this.

CALYPSO EMAIL SAVE TO ARCHIVE from Big Steve
Big Steve writes
I found another really great feature of Calypso by accident. I manage an ezine with 1 million subscribers and I get a LOT of email. I use the filters to sort mail into different folders just like many programs can do, but here's the cool part. You can just right click on the whole folder and choose "save to archive". It will then write all the messages in that folder to a text file of your choice, including the header information and everything. Then you take any one of the little programs that are out there to extract email addresses from a text file and bingo, you've got a nice little list of email addresses that you can set up a bulk mail for, so you can answer 30 people who just asked you the same question individually but at the same time.

This has been a lifesaver for handling remove requests as well. I am using emext32.exe to extract the addresses and it works well. You will also get the addresses from the headers like blahblah@localhost or machine names or whatever but not that many and they are easily edited out.

DEBATING PAYSITE MATH - RECURRING VS PER SIGNUP from Michael
Michael send in this great email with another point of view on paysite math and why he feels that a recurring program is better from both a traffic sending , and affiliate running point of view. I agree with some of what Michael says and disagree on some and put my comments after his at the end.

Michael writes
I don't think you can ignore trials in your calculations - nearly every paysite offers a trial and most sales come through trials. Trials convert very poorly. I think 30% conversion is considered very good by most but is obviously very poor. There is no way in hell that your typical, generic paysite can afford to payout $35 per trial signup.

Which certainly goes a long way towards explaining why the conversion rate is so crappy for most $35 per signup programs - they are forced to shave to survive and profit. I'm not alone in believing this to be the state of things. I mean, how many per-signup programs don't use their own merchant account and custom affiliate program? I can't think of any off the top of my head because if they exist they are a rare animal. CCBill has been proven recently to be happy to look the other way but you can't control the shave the way you can with a proprietary affiliate script.

The percentage programs are simpler and are less likely to cheat because it's a simple split. A sale is made and everyone knows how much they make. There's no projecting how much you think you are going to earn per membership, no risk at all because each actual transaction is split. So the paysite has less incentive or need to cheat.

Recently Bangbus said their best day was 1,000 trials, so I did a little math to see if they could make money off a $35 per signup (mostly trials). Figure 1,000 trials equals $35,000 paid out up front and that is the amount they are in the hole to start. Now they pick up the trial purchase immediately. Let's say that's $5 or $5,000 total and now they are in the hole $30k. I think they convert trials at $40 and that is pretty common so if 30% of the trials convert (ambitious numbers really) they make $12k per month and times 2.5 average stay (your number and again pretty generous most of these crappy, generic paysites) they would in fact clear $3,000 at the end. Wow, a whole $3 profit per trial. Of course, that'd still be $3k. one day and I wouldn't mind that but look at how thin that profit is and easily it disappears if the average stay is closer to 2 months or even less or if the number of trials to convert is less than 30%. Razor thin path to profitability...

But one of the main points I want to make is that I think that your theory covers up the basic truth that webmasters don't trust many - if any - affiliate programs. Everyone suspects strongly or just plain -knows- they are being cheated (but what can you do?). I think it is safer and probably more profitable to go percentage over per signup simply because the program is more likely to be on the level, your conversions are going to be stronger. That's all for now...gotta get some real work done : )

Guru-O-Gif replies:
RE: Ignoring free trials
I don't ignore free trials in my calculations...some sites don't offer them and that is why I have two formulas.

Re: Conversion of free trials
I would have to agree that the majority of free trials drop out. A site just needs to decide what they are "free trial or not" and then calculate what they are making on average. A site might further try and do math and offer two payment a) one for any sign up, and perhaps a second program for only trials that become full montly memmbers. A site could even go as far as making 2 tiers and pay out X amount for the free trial and Y for the conversion to full monthly. I have not seen any sites doing this although they may exist in the per sign-up world. The key is that a site MUST know its math

Re Percent Recurring programs are less likely to cheat
This just means very little to me since we have been worrying about this same fact since day one. With click thru programs, we worried about this "all the time". In the end, all I have to do is test to see where I am making the most money. Again...if a paysite is shaving my per sign-up totals, but I still like the numbers, I will take that over a 50% recurring that is not shaving me. The only way to tell who to send my traffic to is to TEST TEST RE-TEST

Re: Math of bangbus and 1000 signups in a day
I would do the math differently. Let's say the average customer stay with "free trials" included is 2 months. I think this is probably close to the truth since it used to be 3.5, then 3, then 2.5 and is now probably somewhere around 2. Again this is average stay and all sign-ups are put into a vat and added together. One thing I always used to say and still believe is that pay site profitability comes a LOT from laziness of customers to cancel billing. I have said this for years and seen it in sites when they are closed down or left to rot. People are lazy and you often make money on "laziness to not cancel". A 2 months now at $25 a month = $50 gross (this even ignores the extra $5 from trial so I am being conservative). If a site then paid $35 per sign-up ...leaves $15 for the paysite owners = $15,000 (if they did 1000 sing-ups in a day). If we then pretend that bandwidth and administration costs are 2/3 of that, this still leaves $5000 in one day! Ethel, sell the Chevy, we are moving to Beverly Hills! That's $1.8M a year net...sweet numbers if you ask me. Yes the margins are tight and yes it takes a good bankroll to float it.

One problem with per sign up that I am not sure that I have stated lately is that FRAUD for the site owner is very dangerous. If Jimmy the Hacker steals a credit card database, then send 500 sign-ups to you under his account #, you then pay out and he skips town. You then in 2-4 weeks find out all the CCs were stolen and just lost a huge chunk of change. There are a few ways to fight this:

1. allow only members from what country you live in so you can persue legal remedies. If you are an american site owner, sad as it is, only allow US based webmasters to join. If you are a European based site, allow only europeans to join. etc. This is why so many sites already do this

2. watch your stats every day and see who is getting all the sign-ups. If it is someone new that you don't know. Check out his/her site and do some foot work. Does his site get a lot of traffic? Does anyone know him? What other banners does he have on the site? email other sponsors and ask his history etc.

Re: Main points Michael makes is that my math theory covers up the basic truth that webmasters don't trust many - if any - affiliate programs

Again, this is where we disagree. All I have to do is send traffic for 2 days to 2 programs and TEST. Let's assume everyone cheats. I only care about my math results at the end of the day. Where am I making the biggest check from. I have said this same thing same thing 100 times over the years. I don't care if a program pays 4 cents a raw click, 15 cents a filtered click, $20 per free trial, $50 per active member, or $35 per sign up.....none of this means ANYTHING at the end of the day because it is all smoke and mirrors due to the facts that affiliate programs use:

1. different filters
2. different CC processors
3. different site front ends
4. different levels of honestly
5. different ways of counting sign-ups
6. different cookie times

Therefore, I only care about my testing AND I since I want to insure getting paid since I am as paranoid as the next guy, I much prefer to be paid EARLY aka "per sign up". When you go to shared recurring, you are gambling with 1-2 months income if the affiliate program bites the dust.

Michael raises some great points above and I have tried to provide some counter arguements. I like to present all viewpoints on an issue so you can determine where you stand and it might be a third viewpoint or somewhere in the middle. Got something to add? email andy@lips.com and I will put it in next weeks letter.

SALES LOST TO JAVA AND COOKIES from Greg
Greg writes
www.tgswupdates.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=3&topic=75

Ran across the above thread regarding lost sales due to 'cookies' and 'java' disabled with IE6. It's quite the startling thread with stats and a resolution to handle the problem to boot! Scotty from Star Trek couldn't have done better. Just wonderin' if you or the SexSwap crew ever ran into this issue.

guur-O-gif writes
I haven't done any testing lately on this but my personal believe is that simpel sites make more money. I try not to use java on money sites. Anything that adds to the complexity of the site has a greater and greater chance at failing with 5 verions of IE, several versions of Netscape, 3 OSes...you are bound to run into compatability issues. If I had to guess the hurt, I would guess 5%-10% in lost sales but this is all speculation. I may do a test on lips in the future to show a click rate drop on links.

I consider cookies the lesser of the two evils. I know craig the programmer does everything in his power not to design sites with cookies. At sexswap we track the overall cookie error rate and currently it is running from 31% to 72% on the various swaps. This number is HUGE! :) I take it back...I know think cookies are worse. The error rate used to be around 10% but I fidn it again rises as people paste more and more and more code onto a page and you have java, mixed with cookies, mixed with everything else. Again I say "simpler makes more money". Google is simple. DO you use google? I do.

You got to read the introduction to half a dozen of these...real kick ass style. Of course, they went through many editors, so some are worse than others. If I remember correctly, the mid issues were the best ;-) Well...the technical issues goes over my head. But I enjoy the style of the mag.

THOUGHT WE FOUND A POT OF GOLD
Juicy Jill and I were ready to pee our panties last week when we went down a mine shaft and thought we had struck the next MOTHERLOAD. It turns out that in the end, all we got was FOOLS gold. I thought you would enjoy the story. Jill saw a link on the right hand side of directnic. On the right you will see an icon called "shrink that url with keywords"
www.directnic.com
www.directnic.com/features/keywords.php

They use a sales pitch like "type Mickey Mouse in the IE browser and end up at Disney's website". This was all too fun and my mind was spinning. For $49 a year, this would be browser type in craziness. Jill and I began frantically typing in key words. They were all gone! Jill got on the horn and called tech support while I continued to try and find any word. I used the GOTO search tool to come up with ideas
inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Jill then learnt that they are just a front end for REAL NAMES. I checked and I had written about them a long time ago. I think I read in Wired that they were selling names in browsers to businesses and had actually rejected Amazon since it was too generic. Well it looks like they were now going for volume at $49 a year.
www.realnames.com

Jill and I were drooling. If this worked...it would be amazing. Then all the trouble started. We could find some words for $49 and others they asked $199 AND $299 review fee. After a while it looks clear to me that they make money reviewing sites and turning them down. Just try typing all the words that are gone in your browser and you will see almost nothing comes up the way you would expect. I still might try the $49 test but I don't give it much chance of success. If the site worked more like they say...it would be wild. Here are their policies that better explain things
www.realnames.com/Virtual.asp?page=Eng_Policy_Landing

Here is a FAQ but seems like it still does not work like as stated
www.directnic.com/help/faq/index.php?topic_id=15

RealNames says they just started this new service Feb 12 but that was 2 weeks ago and I am not seeing anything like they say in an IE window...maybe in 6?

If we test more I will try to have some result data :)

MOVE OVER SURVIVOR - HERE COMES ULTIMATE FIGHTING from Bruce
www.msnbc.com/news/713677.asp

Bruce sent in that link and I had also read about this on the fight forums. This could be great for no holds barred! :) I worry that they will taint it and pick fighters who are charismatic rather than the best. It will be interesting to see if they are able to pull this off.

Did you see Survivor last week? Like Mr Bowling alley was just a little too into yoga and whackines =]

FREECLICKSTATS ->DYNAMIC REDIRECT AND COUNTER
www.freeclickstats.com

The lads at Nasty Dollars have done it again with their latest sites aimed at adult webmasters. Let me steal the explanation from their FAQ "What exactly is Freeclickstats.com? "
Freeclickstats.com is a service that enables you to count outgoing uniques on your websites links. You will no longer be left in the dark about the TRUE number of uniques you are sending to someone!

I was ICQing with "Ernesto" on Friday and here is some of the info he had to add:
Ernesto writes:
freeclickstats is the shit. especially for webmasters that get their galleries on tgp's. for instance, ur pushing scoreland with your own content for the last 2 years, and using freeclickstats, so instead of sending to scoreland.com?yourid you send through freeclickstats.com?bigtit (sends to bigtitsponsor) then you want to try bignaturals, all you have to do is edit where your bigtit traffic goes in freeclickstats, and all your traffic from the last 2 years will go there. it's also great to check what programs are shaving you etc. it's the ultimate test tool! instead of hard coding links, on all the pages u make, you can use a re-direct link, which can then be changed to a different re-direct location in seconds. allowing you to permanently have control of all your traffic, and manage it much better.

I signed up and had code in my hot little hands in less than 2 minutes. Here is the rest of the FAQ

I LIKE BIG TITS AND I CANNOT LIE - THESE REASONS I'LL TELL YOU WHY
a plug and a story ...

For years I spammed the engines under the term "big tits". I just had always felt that this was the term. Sure "sex" and "porn" at the two KINGS but they were impossible to target. Last week, Juicy Jill and I were on a hunt for internet gold. During our ICQ chat search, I stumbled onto the truth behind BIG TITS and why they are the greatest niche of all time. First you need to go to the overature suggestion tool
inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Now try any adult niche you can think of. You will get the result hit count from last month on goto
231052 teen steam
200269 teen sex
56338 black ass
46128 free fuck picture
50743 free blow job
251951 free pussy
228570 asian pleasure

and the winner is
323772 big tit

UPDATE -> DID I SPEAK TOO SOON?
Ernesto just ICQd me...it turns out there are other big words. I stand corrected.

579820 lesbian sex
330072 lesbian
350082 group sex

What happened to my TITS??? I am not about to give up that easily. Try just the word 'tit' and I will be back on top
636642 tit

Oh Ya! I am the king!

UPDATE -> ONE WORD BEATS TIT
1,033,889 pussy

ya, but that is almost same as porn and sex. There are some pussy niche sites but not as many as tit niche I don't think. Interestingly enough, at Nasty they do have
www.topshelfpussy.com/main.htm?id=

but I still find that babes with jugs seems to take the cake.

Well Tits are #2 in the world of niche searches..And I think this is why I have the best luck sending my traffic to big tit style sites. If you are looking for a big tit site to send traffic to, then I highly suggest giving NastyDollars a try
www.nastydollars.com

With Nasty I send ALL my traffic to BIG NATURALS and I am only pleased with the conversions.
www.bignaturals.com/main.htm?id=

I dig Nasty for 3 reasons
1. Great site FRONT ENDS - which convert
2. Pay Per Sign Up - which I love
3. BIG TITS which are the #2 niche of all time (behind pussy) but tits still kick pussy's ass! =)
