A couple of neat scripts
were just sent in this week by Spanno. One is java and
the other apache mod. What these scripts do is filter users for non-english
speaking, then redirect the this hit. I think this is a very interesting
concept. Spanno uses the script to send non EN browsers to dialers.
I think
this is a very good approach to traffic management. Lots of news this
week on
both GOOGLE and PAYPAL. Google continues to offer excellent products.
Paypal
continues to sink deeper into quicksand as they try to get out the door
with an
IPO. Paypal's biggest problem is that Ebay is trying to run them out
of Dodge
by creating their own in house easy billing system. One very wild thing
at
google this week is that they have the usenet posts now back to 1981....sends
shivers up my spine..WOW! I palyed with the advanced search for hours
trying to
find my earliest posts. I can't remember my earliest emails so if was
a
treasure hunt. Check this out below.
A couple of "make me
sleep with one eye open" stories in the news this week.
The first obsenity trial since 1993 is going to court. The high profile
Symore
Butts has choosen to fight. This is one for personal freedom. I am disappointed
that the federal government still wants to interfere with what people
do in
their bedrooms as concenting adults. Is this not 2002? Are we still
burning
witches? One additional scary story is that some goofy firm has the
patent on
clicking an internet link. Holy fuck batman! I don't give a rat's ass
if you
have the patent on hyper linking...get over it! How about doing one
for
humanity and the internet. We have only been clicking links for 10 years
now
and all of a sudden this firm wants to get paid. What kind of cockamainy
bullshit is that?
I promised to do a tutorial
on banner making in photoshop essentials this week
but 'd rather write it tonight and tomorrow and use it for next week
since the
letter has gotten so big this week once again. I will also do the crook
filter
tips I wanted to add as well. Since I did promise the photshop this
week,
anyone who had their hearts sent on it, please email me andy@lips.com
and I
will email it to you tomorrow, ahead of schedule.
A few folks wrote in abuot
paysite math. It was a little spooky how quiet
people were. I was thinking more folks would blast me into the woods
with
disagreement or perhaps blast with agreement. Daniel writes in with
his opinion
that my average stay figure may even be optimistic! I think Daniel is
right and
you can read his reasoning. I think I am more concerned with how to
calculate
the figure than the actual number. And secondarily, I think many newer
webmasters tend to over estimate stay rates. James writes in with his
opinion
that "content" can effect average stay. He provides some interesting
examples.
I agree that people are staying on some of his sites longer than others,
but I
disagree a little with the reasoning. I think it is his excellent customer
service and frequent content updates, as opposed to type or quantity
of
content, that is making several of his sites better than others. Read
the
article and don't be shy to tell us what you think andy@lips.com
and then there is a little
more talk on email sucker programs and how they
work. this and a few trix more
on with the really big shoe

PROSECUTING PORN
Dave writes
Did you see the PBS Frontline program on porn?
www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/porn/
Couple of interesting points
your newsletter readers might find interesting.
1. The U.S. republican administration
and the Attorney General were gearing up
to go after Internet porn sites when the 9/11 tragedy pushed those plans
aside.
2. An attorney for Larry
Flint provides a list of the sort of images to avoid
to prevent attracting the attention of prosecutors.
Guru-O-Gif writes
I just found this case on those page. Seymore Butts is the first obsenity
trial
since 1993 and is being singled out mainly for fisting in his videos.
He was
offered a plea bargain but has decided to fight it as a matter of principal.

GOOGLE IN THE NEWS AND SEARCH
ENGINE BANTER
There are so many stories on Google this week that I had to make a seperate
section. On a side note, after an ICQ from Juicy Jill, I think the only
way to
spam google, is with content. I think the key to being listed high is
to try
and develop sites with a lot of pages written a lot of ways. If you
have a
site, maybe do it like Proctor and Gamble and re-do it 10 more ways,
all a
little different. The more content and words you have, the more chance
you have
to be high. Door pages just don't work but large content pages seems
to place
well. I can usually find a few of my pages floating around over there
on very
odd seaches. Here are some classics for Google searches..#1 spots =)
Dayne "Baron Of Bandwidth"
Butcher Of Baghdad 427
Guru-O-Gif (odd that this is 5th because of others linking to site)
sexswap
cobra lads
"chow mein wayne"
"see you in hell Mel" (haa haa. I don't even remember that)
stunts without the use of nets, safety-cables, spell checkers
"keep the lipstick off your dipstick"
and they say it's hard to
get #1 on a search engine...it cake. Hee hee haaaa.
Just Jokes. I bet those words get searches get one hit a year. It is
interesting that they are number one and I have often felt, and when
I used to
spam, always found it easier to get number one on many rare words rather
than a
few popular words. For example, even in the beginning, it was impossible
to get
listed on the words "sex" or "porn", competition
was fierce and I think the
engines even subtly sold those spots to bidders. Even other single words
like "tits" and "ass" would be tough. I always preferred
to go after lesser
know words since #1 on any word is better than #35 on a great word.
I would
create software that would take 3 lists and blend them. If you have
the
following 3 lists, you would have instantly, 27 doors
a)
really
super
amazingly
b)
big
floppy
round
c)
tits
jugs
boobs
those 3 combos give you 27
outcomes. It is much easier to be #1 on combos. It
has always been a numbers game so 2000 combo doors work as well as 100
single
word doors where combination words were always too tough and changed
daily.
Alright, I am way off topic, back to Google. =)

I'M SENDING TRAFFIC TO NASTYDOLLARS
AND MAKING BANK by Guru-O-Gif
Currently I am sending my traffic to Robert and Ernesto and Nasty Dollars.
There are 2 reasons why.
1. CONVERSION RATIO
I love to test, test, and re-test adult affiliate programs. Right now,
Nasty
Dollars is one of the best programs for converting my traffic. I love
the way
they design their front-ends. They show tons of pics of the actual girls.
They
have 4-5 pages deep of the girls (all asking for the sale). I love this
style
of site since this is how I used to build my paysite front-end. Here
is an
example with Big Naturals
www.bignaturals.com/main.htm?id=
2. PAY PER SIGN-UP
As you know, I love being paid PER SIGN UP. I like to "make the
sale" and get
that cash in my hot little hand as fast as possible...then I can run
out and
buy more Jim Beam and Flaming Hot Cheetos =) Nasty Dollars pays an excellent
$35 per signup. If you can move 15 sign-ups a day, they bump you to
the awesome
$40 a sign up. This is great pay.
If you are looking for a
new sponsor
If you are looking to test a pay program that can make you MORE CASH
If you want to try pay PER SIGN UP because you have always been percent
recurring
then I recommend you join
Nasty Cash with me. Robert and Ernesto will take good
care of you

RECURRING VS PER SIGN UP from Jason
Jason writes
Just a little comment about recurring vs. per-signup. There's 2 reasons
that I
stick with recurring programs:
1 - Security
When someone is paying you $40 for a $2.99 trial, you have no idea if
they're
actually making any money off of you until they shut down. I really
hate it
when I'm expecting a $5k check in the mail and all of a sudden it's
GONE
because of "low conversions". That's happened to me many times.
Even if they
say they wont kick you for bad conversions, they'll FIND a reason to
kick you
if they're not making money. Who wouldnt? With a recurring program it's
a true
partnership, so there's no reason for them to kick you.
2 - Vacations
When you're promoting a pay-per-signup program you can never take a
vacation. ...if you're traffic dies or your server crashes, your income
is
history. I've had instances where I've had to take a month off of work.
It's
really nice to check my stats from my laptop and see that my income
hasnt died
even though I have done a lick of work in weeks.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
CUSTOM GREETING CARD SCRIPT
TO DRIVE TRAFFIC from D. Trees
Here's some good information for the Swap news readers: Are you using
Big Nosed
Bird's Greeting Card script to help drive traffic to your site?
www.bignosebird.com
It's an awesome script, lots
of fun, and -- if you build them right -- folks
will love to send cards to your friends. *With* your site URL on every
piece of
mail sent.
www.latexfetish.com/card.html
CAUTIONARY NOTE! I was using
an earlier version of this script, one that didn't
have this important line:
@okaydomains=("latexfetish.com",
"www.latexfetish.com");
@okaydomains is critical
to stopping people from sending spam through your
script. I learned it the hard way when some e-mail spammer picked up
on my
inattention, and managed to bulk mail quite a bit of stuff before I
tracked
down the problem and upgraded the script. Of course, I also tracked
him down,
got his phone number and made his life miserable.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF A BROKEN
TERMINAL WINDOW from Craig the Programmer
Guru-O-gif writes
I got stuck on one of my terminal windows with that. I wrote a single
line with
a ps ax if statment and I am stuck at > how do I get out of that?
Criag the Programmer writes
Three potential methods
1: If you're in an IF statement...try
the line ENDIF (might need to be
lowercase).
2: Hit ctrl-z to pause the
process. That'll knock you back to your
shell...then you can KILL the rogue process.
3. Have you tried CTRL-C
or CTRL-X as well?
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
THE SETTERM COMMAND from
Guru-O-Gif
I was asking in the newsgroups on how to dismantle a terminal window
screen
saver and learnt some fun new commands for linux unix. If you are in
a box in
non x windows mode, try typing this
/bin/setterm
you will see many slick commands
you can do to customize that terminal. The one
I was looking for was
/bin.setterm -blank 0
this I believe, turn off
the dumb power saving screen saver. Another neat one is
/bin/smartterm -inversescreen
and then you get black on
white! to cancel a command add 'off' to the end of it
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
ROUGH TRAFFIC ESTIMATION
TRICK from Wyatt
Wyatt writes
Ever want a rough estimation of how much traffic a site gets? It's pretty
easy
to see how much traffic big sex sites get with the likes of sextracker.com
and
all, but its get a bit more difficult for nonadult sites. The browser
plugin
company alexa.com keeps track of this sort of. The only problem is that
their
browser plugin sucks. I simply have this URL bookmarked.
xslt.alexa.com/data?cli=100&url=DOMAIN
I click on the bookmark,
replace the variable DOMAIN with which sites traffic I
want to look at, refresh the page, and WHoHah. Now it doesn't actually
give
you exact #s, but it does give you a ranking. If you know how much traffic
a
porn site gets, and you know their ranking, you can easily get an idea
of the
traffic of the non adult site... I would love to know if any other people
have
tricks on how to look up other sites traffic.

COMMENTS ON PAY SITE MATH
from Steve
Steve writes
OK...here is my idea...look at Playboy and Penthouse...long term subscriptions
cause you are getting a weekly/monthly fix of something you know is
quality...very different from just having everything you can download
right
here and now. Plus...advertisting revenue...
Well...I know what you are
talking about with paysites...I joined a few and
mostly canned them in the first week or two...just got boring..including
the
amateur sites...after you see a chick too much, it gets kind of old.
Ahhhh...I
guess it goes back to "tease" .... maybe a paysite should
be as much about
tease as a free site....Plus....at $39 a month, who the f#!%@ will renew
month
after month? Tease them and charge them $5 - 10 and maybe you will get
them for
a year or two....hehe
Guru-O-Gif writes
Hey Steve, those are great comments. One thing that I haev never tested
and
really wonder about is the elasticity of paysite pricing. Where is the
point
where you maximize profit? I would love to hear what other webmasters
have to
say on this issue. There are some sites charging $39 a month as you
stated, and
there are others at $5 a month. Then there are some that Richard wrote
me about
with 700,000 members at $20 a year recurring. Have any of you tried
sites with
various pricing models? Is it better to price high and fast and get
a short
amount of months? Or price low and fly under the radar on that persons
bill? At
what price point are the chargebacks the lowest or highest? If anyone
would
like to comment, please email me -> andy@lips.com

CONTENT DOES IMPACT PAYSITE
RETENTION from James
James writes
You said something along the lines that you beleive that content does
not have
a direct impact on paysite retention...(I hope you are wrong).. reason
being.....We have 6 black paysites. 4 of them are like Sub black niche,
like
mature blacks, fat blacks, black amateurs and black thick girls..
Now these four sites have
stronger retention that our two more general black
porn sites.. This was not so apparant back in 97, 98 when we were like
one of
the only large black paysites around until Ebony Fantasy was relaeased
by Max
Cash..
Now most mayor sponsor programs
have at least 1 black sites, with ars having
like 4.. I will be honest and say that our two genreal black pay sites
have
exactly the same black content as the other companies do, and we may
get
slightly better retention because we update 3 times a week and give
good
customer support.. However the good side is that these two sites cost
much less
to operate than the for sub niche black sites...
With these we have to use
over 80% of our own content that we shoot in house,
or use a contracted photographer to shoot and the cost of much more..
We do of
course own all the content and can do with it what we please at a later
date,
so it makes the sites more valuable if we decide to sell....
Back to the point, we see
slightly better retention of the sub-niche sites and
they make us more money.. More sales, better retention and fewer chargeblacks
and credits.. With this said however we do not own or wish to own the
best
black site from a surfer view point, they would love to see daily updates
and
shit loads of content..
What I do wish to operate
is the most profitable paysite, and that is what we
have decided to aim for in 2002.. To find a balance between increasing
member
retention yet mentaining a healthy marget... (easier said than done..)
With our
industry moving away from a Customer Acquisition model to a mature model,
(like
where the pc market is at..) it is no longer good business to have a
high
custoemr acquisition cost when you back end (retention) is not optimized....
Guru-O-Gif writes
I think James has raised some very good points and I agree with him
overall.
Let me clarify a few statements I have made. I don't believe content
has
nothing to do with retention, but I do believe it has a minimal impact
on
retention. I think James makes a key statement when he says "we
update 3 times
a week". I think this is the correct approach. I think that constant
updating
of content is far superior to a stagnent $3M database of 10,000,000
pictures.
You will keep a customer much longer if you give them 25 - 100 new pics
as
often as possible, rather than dumping him into a giant database of
never
changing pics. Once again I believe it is not the content of the pictures
that
is keeping the customer...but the freshness of the updates and him believing
that he is involved in an ever changing and exciting site. This does
not have
to be costly. I also think customer service goes a long way in avoiding
chargebacks. Treat customers as you want to be treated. Respond quickly
and
fairly. I think James is doing all the right things. He also mentions
that it
is a balancing act between what the customer wants and what leads to
profitability. Terrific stuff.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
PAYSITE MATH from Daniel
Daniel writes
I strongly believe that the retention rate of most paysite is down from
3
months on average to 1.5 - 2 month per member, maximum .... that explains
why
the signup programs are more popular these days ...how can companies
still
make money if the payouts didn't drop? by raising the fee to join the
website .... most website are at $29.95 up to $49.95 per month .....
and
by adding payment methods that doesn't necessarily credit sales to webmasters
this way, even if the members
stays lets say 1 month and 1 trial, the company
billed them $35 (on a model where the trial is $4.95 and the monthly
membership
is $29.95) ... take out the processing fees, the reserve and the website
maintenance fees, you are left with $25 per signup ..... oupsss ...
how
are companies able to pay $40 on a membership that generates $20 ?!?
....
yes, there is the ''not credited'' signup using other payment methods,
the exit
traffic revenues and upsells revenues, but that will probably not make
it .....
then comes the bad word nobody
wants to be associated with: SHAVING ...... a
lot of companies do it ... it's hard to understand when you are a
beginner ... everybody will want to go with the company that offers
to pay
you $40 and ditch the company that wants to pay you $25 per signup .....
understandable ... sad, but understandable .....!
how to know if a company
is shaving you or not .... only one way ... (you
will like this one) ... TEST, TEST, TEST ... and know your traffic and
the
income it can generate ... the bottom line money a webmaster makes is
the
only things that should matter to him .... screw the number of signups,
the
conversion ratio and the number of hits counted .... look at the column
where
the GREEN stuff is indicated .... :)
Companies simply have stats
that show a nice conversion ratio with a high
payout and webmasters are fooled .... mix that with hard to understand
stats
and you just won! Here is an example:
COMPANY A:
Hits: 800 (probably 2nd, 3rd or join page hits)
Signups: 4
Conversion ratio: 1:200
$ per signup: $40
Total Payout: $160
COMPANY B:
Hits: 3500 (probably counts first page clicks)
Signups: 7
Conversion ratios: 1:500
$ per signup: $25
Total Payout: $175
Most people will think that
they are making a lot more money with Company A
than company B .... but the bottom line is that Company B put more money
on
the check .... you NEED to know your traffic!

COMMENTS ON FRONT ENDS AND
BANGBUS from Geoff
Geoff writes
Great article on paysite math. I too am finding it more difficult to
squeeze
money out of my adult sites. You are totally right about redesigning
the front
ends. You are especially right about bangbus.com When you go to that
site you
think you are going to get something free, it doesn't look like a paysite.

about 12 internet success stories, it shows the behind the scenes stuff
about
some low profile mom and pop sites. I found out about it in the
associateprograms.com newsletter. I joined the site as soon as I went
to it and
it's got some great info about what banner ads work, what to not waste
money
on, all the secrets. It costs $17 a month and they have a new site every
month.
Totally worth it. yeah that's an affiltiate link :)

ABTI SPAM CGI SCRIPT from
Ryan
Ryan writes
I have a great little .cgi on my site that allows me to create any number
of BS
e-mail addresses. Everytime a spammers robot comes knockin on my sites
door it
will find a link to the BS addresses and record every one of them...
heh heh
heh... Now the spammer sends out a ba-gillion e-mails that he/she got
off my
site and they all get returned undeliverable. HA~! They just spammed
themselves
a ba-gillion times! Even if the spammer is smart enough not to use a
return
address that works, they send out a ba-gillion e-mails and get _nothing_
for
their efforts. If every webmaster would use a .cgi like this spammers
would
give up because spamming just wouldn't work. At the least it would make
it more
difficult for them... Let me know if you want the script and I'll send
it
over...
If you go to and scroll all
the way to the bottom of the page there is an
invisible link that when clicked on will take you to the page with the
bogus e-
mail addys...In between my webmasters and refer-it button...

If you want to add it to
your newsletter, I could make it more obvious? = D

MORE ON EMAIL SUCKERS from
Darren
Darren asks
In your spam discussion, you spoke of the email suckers. I have yet
to use one
and would love some background on them. Such as where you would be using
them
and where not to etc...
Guru-O-Gif writes
Most email suckers work by two methods and this is where you would use
them. I
have also added a 3rd opt in method below and 4th how to find some by
hand.
1. Newsgroup Email Sucking
Basically you enter a newsgroup name, maybe
alt.www.webmaster
and you say "go find
me all the emails in that group". You generally need a
usenet account maybe with you dial up ISP. A faster connection is better.
This
is why many hardcore usenet posters use names like nospam-Johnny@foo.com.
People know to remove that to email the person. If you are crafty, you
could
write code to strip that out as well. One problem with usenet sucking,
especially for people who are in porn or for people who are adult webmasters,
porn groups are filled with spam posts and fake emails so expect a huge
amount
of bounces.
aome groups I would look
in are
alt.www.webmaster
alt.www.webmaster.xxx
alt.www.webmaster.ads
Here is an example I just
found..no idea if it is any good.
www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,66865,00.html
2. Search Engine Sucking
You generally load the client software with some keywords. If you were
looking
for people who love "Jim Beam" you might search for "burbon"
"whiskey", "Jim
Beam" "bourbon". You tell the software what engine and
what words and it starts
searching on those sites for email links. You can see how you could
easily get
a lot of off topic email addresses this way. An example I found that
does both
news and engines
www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,101187,00.html
3. Opt In Interest Lists
I am not positive, but I think software like Extractor
www.extractor.com
now get their lists created
by seaching for words of common
interest...say "cars" and "automobiles". I think
this works for Johnny Q Public
style lists, but you might find it hard in finding people with the common
interest of "adult webmastering". So it depends on your needs.
4. By Hand with Scripts
One way that can be useful is to go hunting for emails by hand. I would
try to
do this in two stages. The first stage is to locate BBS or chat software
where
the chat topic is the people you want. If you want adult webmasters,
I would
look for UBBs etc with adult webmasters chatting. I would then try to
find
older model boards that had emails in the profiles or some sites have
a "member
list" with all the emails and addresses on a page. If you luck
out and find
such a list, just save the html file and continue hunting. When you
are done,
aim a piece of software that is an email sucker at those text files
and suck
all the email from the large files into a single file. I like to use
Email
Address Pro but you can code this by hand or maybe find other ones.
In old
sexswap news letters a few people wrote in with regular expressions
and perl to
grab emails from lists but I tend to find this little piece of software
very
good
www.a1soft.com/emext.htm
Hey! I just found a free
one from the same company above. Can't beat that
www.a1soft.com/emextcom.htm
Darren writes:
I actually downloaded the Email Address Pro one, as you suggested. And
"sucked"
(kind of ironic isn't it) a big list. The list was filled with addresses
such as
gpl63a.obc.ln@0.0.0.0
Xns91A74E76C587Domaleyomalcocom@209.155.56.81
AV5.246203@rwcrnsc51.ops.asp.att.net
Have you found a way to filter
these out automatically, or do you delete them
by hand or just send them and deal with them bouncing back?? If nothing
else,
you can add this to questions...
Guru-O-Gif writes
I had that happen to me recently when editing the bounced emails for
this
newsletter. I created the list and had a pile of those. I don't have
a magic
way to remove them but there is a fairly easy way just by sorting to
get the
majority of them. I opened the list in UltraEdit (probably would work
in excel
or other list sorting program)
www.ultraedit.com
and then did a SORT and REMOVE
DUPLICATES. It is under the file and then sort
command. I found that these types of emals were all bunched together.
The
majority were all numbers so I removed all of them...you might lose
a few good
emails but not many. Then I found that they were bunched at the start
of each
letter. So at A's there were a bunch and removed them, and B's etc.
There were
approximately ten spots where they were grouped and it took me 5 minutes
or
less to clean them out.

NON ENGLISH LANGUAGE BROWSER
REDIRECT SCRIPT from Spanno
Spano writes
do you want a trick I can't think of any really good ones but here is
a
javascript I wrote that will do traffic filterring, this one just redirects
anything non "EN" / english language browsers - good from
sending foreign
traffic to a dialer or something and its javascript so all the processing
is
client side and you don't need cgi / php you can just paste it in any
page
<script language="JavaScript"
type="text/javascript"><!--
if (!navigator.language.indexOf("en"))
{
top.window.location=('dialer.com/');
}

I just
send it all to profit plantation and let them do the targetting

RJ45 Y T ADAPTER TO SHARE NET CONNECTION
I was over at Corvette Ansel's pad, and he showed me that on his DSL,
with
fixed IP, he was not running computer sharing, he was not running a
hub, all he
had was a female to female coupler and a RJ45 Y or T adapter. He had
two
computes working just fine on the net. So simple and effective and I
had always
thought this would not work? Any comments on this? Anyone else do it?
Any
drawbacks or limitations? Seem like a cheap and slick way to have two
computers
share a line

NO WINXP FROM RUSSIAN SITE
update on that order I placed a few weeks ago. Remember that site emailed
me
with incredible going out of business sales on software
www.e-buycd.com/
I see their site is gone.
I never got the product. No charges on the CC account
yet but time will tell. I don't know if they were legit or crooks or
credit
card gatherers. If they were crooks, it was quite an elaborate site
and
shopping cart. Seems odd to go through that much work but it could happen.
Anyways, the free palm and WinXP never did arrive :)
