I was just sitting at my desk and staring into space when it hit me "its newsletter day!" :) whew, I was scared I might forget again. I think will set like 52 ICQ reminders to keep me on my toes. I have some exciting news. This week, Karl, Dan and I am putting the push on to finally figure out a method to allow people to get the newsletter without having to be an active member of the banner exchange. I sat down last week and thought of two or three methods that would work and fired them off to Karl and Dan and now Karl is programming like a mad man and we should have code later this week. I know it sounds easy enough but you run into snags and road blocks along the way. Right now, I produce the list weekly by polling the active member database. This works fairly well. This means to get the newsletter, we ask people to join the exchanges. This works but causes some grief. Gus has always preferred a clean database to allow the swaps to run as efficient as possible. This means we delete all dead or inactive accounts once a week to free up and optimize DB resources. This means that inactive accounts get the kibosh every 30 days
www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=kibosh&r=67
and then people are dropped from the email list who really want to be on it. You then have to decide if you want to run two lists. We worried that that the "removal instructions" at the top of the page would be a novel. If you are on the list because of this, do this...but if you join like this, do that. If you are not sure how the hell you got this, well then you are 'sol' :) This would be nothing but a confusion multilier. The good news is, all you faithful online readers will finally be able to get the newsletter emailed to box without too much pain and torture. I hope to have the solution by next week!

Mike buzzes in again this week with the second part of his story on starting a pay site. Allen also sent in a great giant paper on how to make amateur porn. There are a few links to chat bots as we attempt to infiltrate Yahoo chat. IceDemon sent in a slick trick or two on maximizing click profit. This and more fun stuff.

I think I am now getting very close to the definition of an AMATEUR. I want to thank everyone who has written in to set me straight. =) I have all these letters in the last section today and they are great reading. Let me give you a couple quick tips from Craig and May to quickly pick the amateur for the pro. First, if you are wearing 'stilletos', forget babe, you have given up your amateur status and are now a pro. I know this to be true. Now, if you live somewhere in 'LA' and cannot be emailed, your amateur days are iover honey. You are now a pro level pro =) There are more fun ideas and comments on this subject below.

STARTING A PAY SITE PART 2 by Mike
Mike Mac of www.gradeagirl.com writes
Last issue, we talked about: content, equipment, recruiting, the shoot , the
action, the web site, moving money, marketing, and legal issues– all important
aspects of an adult business. If you read the previous article – you’re
probably wondering what else could we possibly say – right?.

This is actually a follow up for those that are in the process of getting
things together and need some additional advice. As I said before, we are just
amateurs who learned most of this stuff the hard way and hope (you) will
benefit from our experiences. If you already have several 100 pics and a self-
done website, pat yourself on the back and read on as this will fast-track your
endeavors.

WHAT NOW?: I assume that at this point you actually have model(s) that are
willing to exhibit on-line for fun or for cash, have a digital camera, a place
to shoot and a game-plan. If not – just join my site and go back to jacking off
www.gradeagirl.com/join.php .

GET ORGANIZED: So start by taking amateur pictures and saving them to your
computer. I recommend re-naming them ALL something other than DSC# or whatever
your camera calls them as the dsc# will screw up a member who saves porn
frequently and will confuse things in the long run. You also want to categorize
them in separate folders by shoot – so you can post them in an orderly fashion.
As you are re-naming them, be sure to weed out the fuzzy ones as no one wants
to look at your mistakes. If you are doing the website as well,
always “thumbnail” each photo – usually about 100x100 pixels.
THE BACK END: If you can’t afford to hire a webmaster and are doing it on your
own, you will still need a place to “host” the site. The host machine is simply
the computer where the site code and graphics physically sit on the web. Adult
hosting is less available and can be expensive so you may want to shop around
for the best deal. For a pay-site, a good starting plan would feature something
like: 400 MB disk space, 3 GB / mo bandwidth , Frontpage Extensions & FTP
access , web based email access w/ 1 POP email address, and some kind of
reporting tool . AWWG (that’s us) offers such a plan for $50/ month found here:
www.awwg.net/shared.php - which is about half of what a bigger company
would charge. If you plan to grow the site, you may want to standardize the way
you ad new galleries, perhaps by using software like
www.cerious.com/thumbsplus.shtml (reluctant plug – but try it for free) or
hiring a webmaster just to create a way to dynamically render new image sets to
your site.

THE FRONT END: No paying customer likes to weed through a sloppy site full of
banners, blind links, and pop-ups – so try to keep the site simple and clean
and limit your marketing affiliates to one specific link or sample page (see
Banners). Limit the use of color and background images. Most surfers (potential
customers) still connect to the internet through a phone line, so both your
sample pages and members area should be reasonably quick over a dial-up – and
if you have more than 30 pics (thumb nailed of course) in each gallery – you
may want to break it into 2 or more pages. Always use common sense - even
though you may think something looks good, the site should be “function before
form” first.

BANNERS: Everyone likes to trade banners, so that should be a priority.
Exchanging banners enables you to refer and receive “traffic” from other sites.
A banner is simply an ad for your site – sized in pixels at 460(w) x 60 (h).
Like this www.gradeagirl.com/abanner.gif it should be saved as a .gif
file and hopefully about 25k in size – right-click on the image and
check “properties” to see the size. (If I am talking too technical, all you do-
it-yourselfer’s may want to reconsider hiring a webmaster as ANY adult
webmaster will know all of this already.) The footwork involved in placing
banners strategically on the web can be a full-time job in itself – so good
luck. The boys over at www.pornresource.com may have some more tips for you.

“P’s” of MARKETING: The marketing majors know that Price, Product, Packaging,
& Promotion are the key to a successful business concept launch. The price is
how much you can charge for your product/service and still justify the value
and catch impulse buyers. For an adult site, anywhere from $5-$25 is acceptable
for a monthly membership fee. We opted to charge $15 based on the amount of
content we have and the fact that $25/month will get you into the pro sites
like Playboy.com or similar where we amateurs can’t compete. Keep in mind that
most people will cancel after the first month anyway, as members know most
people don’t update their sites very often. However , people will keep paying
that fee if you are quick with quality updates AND let them know what you have
planned. The product is not porn so much as it is entertainment – and people
will ALWAYS pay for entertainment – so I need not say more. The packaging in
this instance consists of the overall perception of: the site layout (cheesy or
not) , the niche (fetish or glam), and the value (one repeated model or many
models). The cover/sample page and your banner should be the showstopper –
otherwise people will never know what you have. Lastly, the promotion is
difficult as there is a ton of porn on the web. If you are just showing naked
girls or people screwing – it helps to have large high-quality sample photos
and videos. Nothing beats a facial close-up shot or a good shower or BJ video
for getting people to at least click on the join page. If you are serious, you
may want to “hire” an ad agency to do an on-line campaign for your site. Often
times, they will base their fee on a percentage of your sales or number of new
visitors they send you. This would be a good solution for someone who does not
have the time to do the site content AND market it.

SUMMARY: The most important thing I can relate to anyone breaking into the
business is just basically to be a nice guy. "You catch more flies with honey".
Check out our site www.gradeagirl.com and know that if you join, we actually
appreciate it and will improve it as time goes.

PS: If you are a webmaster, please do not try to hack our site. We will gladly
give you a password if you want to exchange banners
www.gradeagirl.com/abanner.gif
or trade some original content.

IMAGE ROLLOVERS REVISITED from Bill
Bill writes
I remember a while ago you wanted to know how to get an image to appear
anywhere on a page via rollover effect.
The best and easiest way to this is in Adobe Image ready.

I design the whole site in Photoshop, Make layers for my rollovers later on,
save it, and cut it up in Imageready using the slice tool. Then, using the
rollover effects in Imageready, you can just select a new rollover instance,
and turn on any layer you want and move it anywhere on the page.

I'm working on a corporate site now that uses this effect. When you rollover
a link to a product, the logo apprears watermarked on the main page. I also
have rollover effects for the buttons. In other words, there are 2 things
going on when you rollover a button. The button changes, and the watermark
appears. Pretty cool stuff. If you don't use image ready, give it a try.

www.adobe.com/education/pdf/ce/photoshop/ce_10005.pdf

ImageReady is part of Photoshop. Photoshop 5.5 is imageready 2 and Photoshop 6 is imageready 3.0 It's not part of Photoshop 5. I forgot to mention that imageready will also let you choose how to optimize each slice. If some graphics need to be jpeg and some text images need to be gif, no problem. When you save the file from imageready, (save optimized as) it creates the html file and puts the images where you want them. (images folder etc..)

YAHOO PERSONALS REVISITED from Tom
Tom asks
I had some questions on two areas that I have been reading about in your newsletter. The yahoo personals thing (issue #226). I have looked into this, and I noticed that the personals yahoo hosts the picture. It is only for the profiles (which dont think can be linked to the personals, that can serve a picture off ones site.) Can you elaborate on this at all? Am I missing something here?

Guru-O-if writes
hmmm, I don't remember the article...let me see if I can find it...ok, got it...Dan from gamma showed us it on the gamma chat board. Here is the article from #226

--
YAHOO - ARE THEY CLUELESS sent in by Dan
chatboard.gammae.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001841
Dan sent it this great post from the Gamma chat board. It seems that a webmaster found that a Yahoo personal user had hotlinked to one of his pics. Being kind, he told yahoo of the problem and got back the standard B.S. "we cannot alter the personal add without proof"....like look you idiots..he just gave you the exact proof...open the source and see the link! The good news is that he is pulling 150 hits a day from the hotlink! Are the cogs in your braing turning? Posts to Yahoo personals...links back to your site....each add is 150 hits a day! WOW. (this may be illegal or immoral so consult a lawyer first). Hee hee haaa, man am I soft in my old age. In sexswap issue #12 I would of said "here is how you spam the fuck out of yahoo personals" =) Now, let's say yahoo charges for personals. Well they charge $600 to index an adult site and I sure bet you don't get 150 hits a day...if personals were $20 a month...it might be worth the fee. Would you pay $20 for 150 x 30 = 4500 hits and that is 0.004 or 4/10ths of a cent per click...man that is sweet math.
--

OK, there are a couple of things going on here. I just joined the Yahoo personals and pretended to be a 97 year old man. As you stated, there is no way to link to a remote pic. So either Yahoo used to allow it and has recently cancelled, or perhaps it was a pic in the public profile. I did call up the public profile and it allows urls to sites (not sure about pics). My guess is that Yahoo decided to control pics by hosting them internally.

USING REDIRECTED PASSWORD ATTEMP PAGES FOR PROFIT from IceDemon
Ice Demon writes
In your last news letter (been going to the website now to read them), both
Darren and Craig said that password trading traffic is real crappy. I use
IProtect on my server which directs all stolen passwords to a 403 page.
Isn't it just a matter of putting up a click through program on that page or
am I missing something? Holger even gave a javascript to open a new window
where the only way of closing it is by clicking on a banner link or pressing
ctrl-alt-del in the last newsletter. You still need to put up something in
the popup window page for legitate customers to get in contact with you in
case they forgot their password and tried too many times to get in or
they're using one of the passwords that was traded. You can also put up
links to Top Sites and banner exchanges or even some site that shows top
referers on there front page. Maybe think of a way of getting that crappy
trafffic to bring in good traffic.

MAXIMIZING PROFITS OF PAY SITES by IceDemon
IceDemon writes
I think some people with membership sites just think of how to get the
customer to join their site rather than other ways to make money from them
to. I sometimes make money 2 or 3 different ways from the same
visitor/customer. For example when I first started erotic-games.com I
signed up for a couple of affiliate programs also. One of them was the
One-On-One program from IGallery. I had put that in my free downloads and
the members area. I made over $1,000 extra each month no matter if the
customer joined the site or not. Since the One-On-One program was downloaded
from my site I didn't lose any potental signups either.

DO DOOR PAGES STILL BEAT THE ENGINES from IceDemon
IceDemon writes
Do you think gateway/doorway pages are still good for promoting in the
search engines? I made a quick doorway maker on Saturday. It made 33,978
pages (532Megs). Each doorway page has not only links to differnt parts of
my site which look something like this
randomkeyword.erotic-games.com/#randomkeyword_description_of_page_it_
goes_to_on_my_site
It also has all the doorway pages linked togather with the pages named
something like this.
erotic_2UBq03Nvvos.html (I was hoping it would be harder for a spider to
catch on with the scrambled letters and numbers in the page names)
Adult_bauWfk0LTc.html

Guru-O-Gif writes
I am not sure. I actually think now that the pages probably need to look a little more like mini sites in order to beat the filters...they probably need a little more randomness. Where before, I would just randomize the word. If I was to create a door maker today. I would also randomize.
1. size of page (how much text)
2. colors
3. pic counts
4. amount of url links
5. links back and forth in the various doors

I would try to make each door individual in nature to beat the better filters that are looking for door patterns

IceDemon writes
There are 5 links to another doorway page on each doorway page using 5
different domain names. And of course each page has different descriptions,
titles, meta tags, blah, blah, blah. I was thinking of using a .htaccess
file to cloak the pages. Right now they have a javascript redirection on
each page. I was just going to use the "Order allow, deny" with it only
allowing the ip addresses of the spiders to get through. The rest would be
redirected to erotic-games.com using "ErrorDocument 403
erotic-games.com". I'm just curious on your thoughts for doorway
pages and if they can still work with out being caught.

Guru-O-Gif writes
I think they still work but not as well as before. Most engines catch them by limiting submissions per day. I think with google, they most likely have algorythms to catch doors and this is why I am thinking the pages need more random elements in order to appear unique and less like doors. I have no proof of this...it is just my thinking on the subject. I notice all my little fun sites get picked up in the engines and this leads me to believe that a site can be small and as long as it is unique, it will rank.

I now think that DOOR MAKER script might need to become SITE MAKER scripts. Several people are very good at playing the Age Check site game. Some people use several employees to churn out many Age check type sites while others use very advanced script to spew out many age check sites in order to get maximum real estate on the site lists of these verification services. I know your Craig The Programmer had made one of these pro level scripts long ago and it was PRO MASTER level. I think the modern door maker should be along the lines of the AGE CHECK SITE MAKER. Where you have maybe 3 piles in which the script dives into to produce a site or pages.
1. a directory with nothing but pictures
2. a directory with nothing but text files all describing subjects
3. a directory with nothing but links

the script then would go into these directories and create mini websites that had a small amount of form and function and a good bit of randomization in order so they do not appear as doors since filter algorythms on the best engines can now find these. Anyone have any additional thoughts on this subject? email me andy@lips.com

THE COST OF DESIGNERS AND WEBSITES from Miss Laurie
Last week in one of the stories, a statement was made on the cost of producing a website etc
Miss Laurie writes:
I think that only the biggest paysites pay $3000-$6000. I think webmasters should be able to get a very good site for $1000-$1500. I figured you would recommend that webmasters do it themselves since there's software that makes it not too hard. Many webmasters know the basics and can just pay to get a logo & banners done, they do the rest themselves. (Maybe get some navigation buttons or other done too.) I would suggest they do that. Although it's not always expensive... we do basic small sites at a great price, as low as $250, and we trade our services for traffic or other things : ) We don't take any payment up front. We also do photo retouching, scanning, etc.
www.VixenGraphics.com/

We sell pre-made sites with domain & content too, and will custom make sites of course. They aren't the pro paysite type, but then they also don't cost $1500-$3000+ as others are selling : ) If anyone has suggestions re: our plug-n-play sites, just email.

POP UPS IN MOVIES by Phil and Craig
Phil asks
I recently stumbled across a few porn mpegs on Kazaa that somehow force a popup window to open to a certain url everytime they are played in Windows Media Player. Have you heard anything about this? I did a lot of searching on the net and couldn't find a word about this anywhere, but as it concerns the Adult internet industry I thought you might know.

Craig the programmer responds
it was the media player form movies ... .asf I believe is the extension. You could add triggers to the videos to allow different things to happen at any time in the video....one of which was open up a url. The software to do this is located at microsoft's media player home site.

WHAT TO CHARGE FOR AD SPACE from Greg
Greg asks
One thing I've run into is WHAT to charge for advertising space? I have one client who makes five figures a month on a site that gets 150,000 hits a day. So what do we charge and for what? I'm sure we have to whittle it down to niche and placement, size and format but what's the average for charging for ad space?

WHAT'S AN AMATEUR from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
I'm sure some may disagree with me but I believe the major difference
between and amateur and a pro on the net in the adult industry is mainly the
photo style and the models used.

By dictionary definition unless someone is taking pics of his gf and tossing
them online any woman getting paid for her photos online would be considered
a professional.

By the photo style standpoint though there are some unique differences

Amateur (imo they should be):

- locale -> Not standing in front of a blank wall or an obvious set.
Bedrooms, living rooms, under the table at your local Denny's etc.

- lighting -> Typically photos taken with pure flash photography, little
dimmer than what you would get from a professional photographer, you can
still see everything but things are slightly darker than say what you would
see in a playboy

- models used -> Major issue here. Amateur models are typically (or should
be) your every day type of male or female. People with little or no plastic
surgery, people who just love being exhibitionists but aren't completely
obsessed with looking like a cookie cutter porn star. This would include
women with small or saggy breasts...women with a little
more meat on your bones than the average belimic model, etc.

- more hardcore than your average porn star...in the sense if you're
watching a true amateur video...they act differently than what you would see
in a professional video. As an analogy it would be the difference between
filming a caged lion over one running free in the wild. They're both lions
but act very differently.

- another thing is the sound...most amateur videos use no music and all you
hear are the moanings/groanings etc....many professional videos tend to use
just bad music over any sounds at all (although some do both)

Professional:

- Very stereotypical. Big breasted, always wearing stilletos, usually pure
blonde/brunette/raven dyed, very structured sex (aka first women goes down
on guy, then guy goes down on women, penetration, few different positions,
anal, cumshot). Every situation in the video is virtually the same. Kind
of like watching a power rangers or sailor moon episode. Very scripted and
cliche.

- Models: Obvious custom made individuals, breast implants, liposuction,
facelifts etc....women you can't really relate to ever being around (unless
you work in the industry =D)
- Locale is obvious sets, usually very bright lighting and typically nasty
music.

So basically the difference I see between the two is based on what you
desire. Amateur tends to be more 'the girl next door' kind of philosophy of
you maybe peeping through her bedroom window whereas professional is more
being part of your local swingers club.

WHAT'S AN AMATEUR from Sexy May
May writes
I am one of the "culprits" that coin the term "amateur". Although my site is commercial, we turn a huge profit, and I have been doing this for 3 years or so, I still consider myself amateur for these reasons:

I make the site myself, my husband photos me. When I started, I knew nothing about the business, so I was definately an amateur, because I was making a lot of mistakes back then! In fact if it wasn't for your newsletter, I would still be in the dark ages, and I'm not kidding. We even host with NakedHosting because of your newsletter.

We make and sell copies of video tapes we make here at home, our videos are very amateur, as there is nothing pro about it, just raw unedited footage of sexy situations. Some people like it this way, because it's real. Often pro porn tapes jump to the action instantly, where ours shows the whole process, and it's a slower build up that can be very sexy. There is an intimate reality to this that edited footage loses. We maintain the Andy Warhol "real time" feeling, which is "closer to life", and therefore is amateur video.

Another thing which is obvious, there are people out there that like and search for the term "amateur". It's a great keyword. I assume they feel like they are getting something special, direct from the source. When one buys a commercial porn tape, you can bet the sexy babe did not make the copy you receive, as with my products, I actually do it all. That's my handwriting on the box when items ship out. It is this relationship the buyer has with an amateur site that is unique. One can contact the amateurs, they are approachable and real. Pros are somewhere in LA and they cannot be emailed, written to, or contacted easily. Amateurs are easy to contact as their site is usually just them. If surfers did not react to the term, it would not be so popular, so it is the psychology the term creates that causes it to be used again and again.

I think amateur is technically a wrong term, as a professional is defined as someone that is paid for their service, and our site requires one to sign up to get into the full site. "Amateur" helps let the web surfer know that they are visiting a site made at home by no more than a couple people. I think the term just helps them feel closer, although by definition it is incorrect. Just as language continues to develop on the net, we have to adhere to the terms in order to communicate to others. Amateur lets people know I make the site myself... or at least that is what I assume it makes them think. As my web design gets slicker and slicker, I have to do something to remind my visitors that it's just me in here, not a corporation of 300 people. The term amateur helps do just that.

Perhaps we could use this opportunity to come up with a term that describes a site such as mine more appropriately..."Homemade"? Maybe your readers will have the proper solution.

WHAT'S AN AMATEUR from Indian Joe
Indian Joe writes:

PRO = Jenna Jameson. Nina Hartley. Asia Carrera. - they do movies and they make a living at porn. I think being a PRO brings a certain amount of fame as well. They are on a higher quality level too as far as pictures, movies whatever.

AMATEUR = Amateur girls don't do this for a living. They have a website, they do everything themselves, they take their own photos from their home. From what I see, most Amateurs you don't know their names. They just have a certain look to them that for most is more appealing then the plastic porno women. This is not to say that some amateurs can't have breast implants - just most don't. I'm in the process of starting my own amateur website and I'm shopping for cameras. Do you think I should get a high quality, medium, or low quality camera. Part of being amateur is not having a huge company back you to do your photo shoots. I want it to look authentic and from looking at most of the amateur sites most of the pics are grainy. What do you think? Do you think this one area where grainy pics can actually convert more sales?

BOTTOM LINE - Amateur VS. Pro

PRO - a person who makes a living at what they do.

Amateur - a person who doesn't make a living at what they do. They have another job to pay for the amateur activity.

Guru-o-Gif writes:
I really think any good quality digital camera would work. I personally think people want clear crisp pictures, and then the subject matter is more amateur, rather than pciture quality. If I was going to take my own content pics, I would be looking to spend $500 - $1250 on a medium to the lower high end cameras. I would want something that I could take a pile of pics with (lots of storage) and had a great rechargeable battery. I have always like the Sony Mavica lines and for a lot of pics, I like the ones with CDs in them. There are many other great choices that use memory sticks etc and will also hold thousands of pics. I would not worry too much about mega pixels since when you place the pics online, anything of too high a quality would simply be gigantic and your bandwidth bills would be through the roof.

hope this info helps and thanks for your thoughts :)

The one thing though is that if we set up a secondary billing system it cannot use the same .htaccess file as the Ibill system we already have. Can you offer any tips or let me look at any sites that use multiple entires for multiple billers? Also you once mentioned that multiple posting was possible...any tips?

I don't know the answer to this but was hoping some of you pro level webmasters might be able to shed some light on this for John and others. If you have info on how to do this, please email andy@lips.com for next weeks letter. thanks
