ACK! EEK! I can't believe
it! I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone. I have to apologize to everyone
"I FORGOT TO SEND LAST WEEK'S SWAPNEWS!" Ack! I am still in
shock. Let me go on records once again and state "I just freaking
hate holidays". The markets shut down...you can't get a lick of
work done....and I personally lose track of what damn day it is.
Before I forgoet
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEARS!
I started to get hints that
there was something wrong where the following 3 things occured.
1. Sexy Emma from Kitchener
ICQ'd me and said "hey, did you send the Swapnews this week?".
People ask me that all the time and usually they ask because their email
may have fallen off the list and this is what I suspected happened with
Emma.
2. Richard the engineer says
"did you put the swapnews online this week" and I say "ya,
I put it up every wednesday.
3. I get the YNOT newsletter
and I laugh to myself...Ha Ha! I scooped these guys with that Addicted
to CyberSex Story...I sent that a week ago. Then I see that it is in
this letter today.
I pull up the letter I am about to send and I always pre date them.
I read SexSwap 12.28.2001 no.225. What in the world is going on here?
I am a week behind in my dating. What! My mind starts running a million
miles a minute...I am in a full blown panic. I hate missing appointments
or being late! I finally figure it out. I quickly get on the ICQ to
Dan and Karl. The lads work out a solution that I think will be just
fine. We hate to miss a week of SexSwap so I am sending 2 small issues
today which would be like one mega issues since I melded 12-14 days
of info into the one letter and forgot to shoot it out. What was last
Wednesday anyway...I think it was just a late december day. I must of
been sipping too much Nyquil on that afternoon!
Here is the first issue of
two SexSwap newsletters that will arrive in your box today. Some of
the news in this one is a little stale since it was recorded over a
week ago. Please drop me an email if you have any stories, tips or trix
you want to share with readers for next week! andy@lips.com

ADDICTED TO CYBERSEX?
what a load of bunk, but an interesting read. Whenever I hear the word
"addiction", alarm bells go off in my head. Since I spend
12 hours a day at the computer...am I addicted to the compter? Since
I eat Tomas English Muffins every day with penut butter...am I addicted
to muffins and peanut butter? Since I watch way too much ultimate fighting...am
I addicted to ultimate fighting? I think people just naturally do a
lot of things they like and this does not necessary mean they are addicted
to squat. take it with a bag of salt =)

MORE BRUTE FORCE IDEAS from
Rebel Hawk
Rebel Hawk
In spite of the brute force attacks i can tell you: I DID IT!, I FINALLY
DEFEATED THEM, how?, easy: lowered my IP/tries limit to 2 and raised
my IP hold time to 60 mins and they are gone for ever. spread the word
out, if your members are interested i can write an alogritmic scheme
of the code, so anyone can write it in perl, php, sh or whatever, mine
is in sh. Also, i'm still working on the 'frequent delinquent' IP database,
some sort of RBL for the IPs, i would like to offer it for free to all
the adult community.

FRONT PAGE FTP QUESTION from
K.C.
K.C. writes:
We have sites on 3 servers, with 2 hosts. We did have 1 site on 1 server,
and 12 sites on 1 server, all NT. We had our host try to build us a
UNIX machine that almost worked out, but ended up on deticated NT anyhow.
We needed UNIX to run some scripts, and he moved 1 site to a UNIX server
the shop runs on so that we could run the scripts. 3 servers, 13 sites
now. We work live with FrontPage to publish and do changes, and we can
no longer access the deticated server with FP since just before our
up-grade to FP 2002, and currently cannot. We can access the other 2
servers with FP. Our host, Craig, swears the problem is not on his end,
and must lie with Earthlink due to port blocking. I have spoken with
Senior Tech Support and while they have admitted port 25 (e-mail) blocking,
they swear that is the only port blocking they have in effect. This
stands to reason, as we can connect to 2 out of 3 servers. We have removed
and changed user names and passwords to the server, and this does not
change anything, however, the server can be connected to from other
backbones with our user and pass. It seems we're the only ones that
can't connect to the server. What's your take on all of this?
Guru-Of-Gif writes:
I would try and use a process of elimination
1. do you have more than
one box at home...can you connect with that other box...if yes, then
it may just be something funny on the new box
2. when your friends connect
to the third box...are they using FrontPage? or are they using Telnet
or FTP?
3. Do you have another FTP
program other than frontpage that you can try to connect to the 3 boxes
with?
so try to determine
a) is it this box only
b) is if frontpage only
c) is it that server will not let anyone in (sounds like no)
I doubt it is earthlink.
If you haev an msdos prompt or in windows I think it is called COmmand
Prompt...click it and see if you can get to the server
for example...if your server is foo.com , at the command prompt type
ftp www.foo.com
it should then ask you
Username: (enter your name and then Return)
Password: (enter it and hit Return)
and see if you get in...if
you do...the trouble may be Frontpage related. Or if you have another
FTP client like CuteFTP or something, give it a try. If anyone has any
other ideas or solution to this problem...please email it to me andy@lips.com
UPDATE - FTP MYSTERY SOLVED
- FP2002 TIP
K.C. writes
It WAS on his end ! He up-graded the one dedicated server to FP 2002
extensions. All sites on a server running 2002 extensions CANNOT have
the
same user and pass. Same user = OK. Same pass = OK. Not both. All he
needed
was for me to eliminate all of the other options, and then he looked
at his
servers.

UPTIME AND BIND from Interstel
Interstel writes:
Yeah NetCraft has been pinging our servers forever. Interestingly enough
I
find that no server I operate on FreeBSD can go under load more than
90
days. I've got boxes out there that are extremely low volume that I
have
had up for over 300 days at a time. But with constant DNS traffic and
the
various types of DNS BIND exploits out there I find that while no one
can
kill a box of mine or overload it. What they can do is jam DNS up so
that
that only a warm reboot clears the all the buffers out which even killing
BIND can't do. I would be interested in whether some of the these 200+
day
operations run BIND on their machines because you can get really weird
results with BIND running for more than 90 days.
The longest I've ever gotten a BIND 8.2.x DNS run to stay up is 87 days.
The BIND memory cache was 57 megabytes in size. But it was acting REAL
funky. I find a BIND purge about once every 45 days is good for the
system. Course since I'm always tinkering with hardware I think the
longest a webserver has been up is 60 days. harh harh.

BRUTE FORCE AND DRAWBACK
OF ERROR 403 from Interstel
Interstel writes
We stopped using this method awhile back because the
reply packets eat up more bandwidth than the hack attempts do! Unless
you
dump the hackers into oblivion without reply to their packets after
the 5
failure in 2 minute window you're wasting bandwidth. And the amount
of
bandwidth even a 403 generates is about 5-10 times what the request
header
alone sucked up.
Course, <grin> I can
convince all my hosted customers to buy this kind of
protections which is why lots of them have high bandwidth bills. They
just
never get the point.
By the way. We do forcibly
redirect those first attempt our of 5 into a
theftjoin page. I figure once in a great while you'll actually sell
them
something.

Great for disabled, warehouse workers or people with

damn unpatriotic of me). I mean this thing isn't even
much of a toy, you can have WAY more fun on a

these are they going to remove all the no

GINGER BANTER from Bruce
Bruce writes:
Like Melody, I too "speak from a place of knowing" in that
I'm a mechanical engineer and I am disabled, although I don't really
think of myself that way. I would love to have something that could
get me around quickly so I want to see something like Segway work, but
I know it won't. Being an engineer, I know that similar products already
exist and none have taken over the world. Part of it has to do with
point #5, "It takes up less space than cars". That's why it
will never be street legal. The Segway is too slow and too small to
safely share the road with other vehicles. Point # 6 "Ecological
Impact" is not as clear as it seems. I know a bit about this, too,
given my current occupation working for a large electrical power utility.
With electric vehicles, there is an element of "not in my back
yard" in that the power is produced elsewhere, sometimes by coal
or oil burning power plants. Given California's electrical problems
last summer, can you imagine what it would be like if hundreds of thousands
of Segways were charging every day ?
I thought about the design
of an effective scooter type vehicle, and yes, Richard and I could come
up with something. We know the engineering aspects, and Andy Dunn could
be enlisted, because he knows people, what they want, and how to turn
it into money. A lot of designs end up looking like motorized wheel
chairs. People don't want this. Andy, with his Butcher of Baghdad cap
on would say, give them more power, make it tough as nails, not some
tippy fragile little cart. Forget two wheels, Forget three wheels, give
me four ! It has to go over curbs, I'll even make it climb stairs and
plough through snow. Oh wait ... they already have these.
english.honda.ca/motorcycles/models/2001/TRX450ES_mo.asp
Too rugged for your tastes ? Not planning on climbing stairs or going
through snow ?
How about this little number, and its even street legal.
english.honda.ca/motorcycles/models/2000/SK50M_mo.asp
My point is that people could be using vehicles like this right now,
but generally they don't. When I look at the parking lot at work, I
see a parking lot full of SUVs and minivans. I like Kamen's wheel chair
design, and hope to see more products that will help disabled people,
but this is a long way from redefining how society gets from A to B.
