Get out the Jim Beam and Diet coke!
www.jimbeam.com/jb_web/content/Bar/Drink.asp?1

just when you thought it was safe to read the skinny newsletter...another monster shark emerges! This week is jammed packed with a lot of little stories and 2-3 major stories. At the top I have links on the @HOME fiasco. What a mess. And another top5 search engine bites the dust. Don't you wish you had the traffic that Excite squandered away. This week was the official release of Ginger. It actually hit the net Sunday night. Lots of links on that and then I spout off some opinion on it at the end of this issue. This is a monster issue on Viruses and Firewalls. That damn virus has been hammering everyone. It was effecting over 3% of all internet computers at one point last week. I have tried McAfee, Norton, and Zone Alarm. I'll let you know what I have decided before you get to that section...I ICQs Legendary Lars and he said "you gotta use NAV and ZONE", so I am following his lead. It seems to be working great. There is a great link to a service that is free and emails you 4 test viruses to test check your box. One story link inside the virus story is disturbing. McAfee and perhaps other comapanies are allowing holes in their software so the Feds can spy. This bugs the crap out of me. Our civil liberties are being eroded with this type of action. Can I mix you another round? Since it is the week of IT, how about a Jimmy and Ginger
www.jimbeam.com/jb_web/content/Bar/Drink.asp?2

Everything you wanted to know about building your first computer but were afraid to ask. I have loaded the last section with way too much handware banter. If you are interested in building your very first box, I lay out the pro-level, 15 item system. It is straight forward. I then give 3 sample systems you might attempt. If you love hardware, you will peee. If you hate this tech crud, you will toss 8^) I guess one man's pee is another man's toss. Hee hee haaaa. On with the shoe

THE VAST VIRUS VAT
what should I use? I am unhappy with McAfee. Norton Anto Virus seems to do the best job. Zone Alarm seems to work for some people but not me. Your thoughts? email andy@lips.com. Here is what I have tried this week.

NORTON ANTI VIRUS
I have been a mcafee hold out for the last few years and then finally last week I decided to try NAV once again. McAfee is just pissing me off for 3 reasons.
1. it did not seem to pick up the bad_trans in my email and NAV does
2. it does not uninstall (it says cannot unistall mcafee agent without uninstalling other mcafee items) which do not come with uninstalls! and I found this problem on 4 computers...not just mine.
3. Difficulty installing if anything goes wrong. I paid $30 to tech support and after hours of frigging around, I could not install McAfee back on one of my computers. This was the last straw.

The wife downloaded NAV and said it was grabbing viruses left and right. Sexy Emma recommended it as well AND let me know that there is 1 year FREE. It is hard to beat a year free. If you want to try NAV, here is the free trial for NAV 2002
nct3.digitalriver.com/0001/

It installed fairly easily. I had trouble talking my mom up in canada through an install but it seemed to eventually work out. I am not sure whether I like NAV or not at this point. I like that it catches things. I do not like that it slows both incoming and outgoing mail as it checks all pieces but I guess that is a necessary evil. I will continue to test and try it and see how it goes over the long run. I like Mcafee when it came out but then support, quality and ease of use has continued to plummet which is too bad.

ZONE ALARM STOPS BAD TRANS VIRUS
www.zonealarm.com/products/zap/zap_securityupdate.html
this is rather interesting and I would prefer to use a firewall to a virus protector. In fact, I may unload Norton and give Zonealarm another try. I abandoned it a year ago when I went to 2000 and they hadn't upgraded. This seems like a nice way to go and then does not slow email.

UPDATE ON ZONE
Ack! I unistalled Norton thinking my worries are over and then of course the first emails I get are loaded with the virus and ZoneAlarm missed them all. Ack! I think it only sees them in Outlook rather than Calypso. I am not sure what to do at this point.

FREE VIRUS SCAN ONLINE
I found that TrendMicro has a free virus scanning area. I am not sure if it will pick up the latest viruses, but it looks pretty up to date. and check this out...7 viruses found. Eeek! I don't think Zone Alarm is working with Calypso and I will most likely return to Norton. I am very impressed with this free service.

TEST YOUR VIRUS EMAIL PROTECTION NOW from Ansel
www.gfi.com/emailsecuritytest/
Ansel sent me this awesome link that shoots you 4 types of email hacks...but these are safe attempts used to test your sytem. After reading this...I know believe the pop up spam emails are using a sneaking MIME exploit with VB and not something that is generally allowed. To use this site, enter your name and email. You then get an email, click the link and you will get the four exploits. Here is how I am testing as of writing this

Test #1 VBS - Blocked by Zone alarm
Test #2 CLSID - Windows did not know how to open (did not think it was jpg)
Test #3 MIME - Calypso tries to SAVE AS or RUN and I click cancel
Teat #4 ActiveX - This was saved to my desktop and opened in Notepad

so I would say I am only confident on #1. 2 and 3 were a pass but just because the system did not open them. 4 was a failure if you ask me. Ansel who uses Outlook and IE6 sets his security higher and had this to report with just Zone Alarm

Test #1 VBS - Blocked by Zone alarm
Test #2 CLSID - Windows would not open as it did not recognize the file extension
Test #3 MIME - Zone Alarm put a stop to this one
Teat #4 ActiveX - This was stopped by Windows Internet Security settings

Is there any reason Active X controls should be on in the browser or is it safe to disable those? Email andy@lips.com. Any more advice or comments on the best ways to be sure without being paranoid? email me. I hate to run a firewall AND virus protection...way too much crap if you ask me.

TV USEAGE DOWN DUE TO NET from SignGuy
here is news that just started to occur in the media about a year ago when the big 3 TV stations started to get scared. There is a monumental change occuring in our society. People, after 30-40 years, are starting to watch less TV and the reason is 'internet'. It is especially noticeable with younger kids who love MP3s and chatting etc.

get fancy HTML support and automatic placement of backgrounds, etc but what

PRO LEVEL HARD DISK RECOVERY IDEAS from Zig
Zig writes
in regards to the hd crash...if the lad has 2 or more drives in his box, a boot disk from floppy would allow him to boot clean....see if he can actually see his data on the primary, and maybe move it to the other drive/drives if he has room. We all get surprised by drives that go poof, but if the data was important....thats what back-ups are for :) if he does'nt have 2 drives.....I'd boot from a floppy.....see if I can see the data on the HD before I invested in a new drive....and if I could...would do exactly what you said.

I've never used it, but here tirismu "spelling botched" has a great set of tools that can actually rebuild a broken fat table in a winx? box. Read a story of a radio station that whos servers were hit by the chernobal virus....supposedly they were able to recover the drives with that tool set.

One last oldie but a goodie in the ms world....sometimes a virus or even partitioning software can screw up your mbr and trick your box into thinking the fat table is
gone or modified...again with a boot disk, the good old command "fdisk /mbr" can and often will restore the last saved master boot record. This was a great tool to recover drives back in th dos days, when disk mangler and drivepro would screw up a perfectly good hard drive...:)

Guru-O-Gif adds:
here is a link with some of the ideas Zig has outlined on what you can try at home to repair an HD
www.pcnet-online.com/content/utilities/199904.htm

and here is some software called
RECOVER IT ALL WITH DRIVEMASTER2000
they claim Boot, Partition, Fat, and Root directory repair (not just file recovery!) It is a hefty $200, but that is cheaper than a HD recovery house. I imagine they use software like this. This would work on anything but a head crash I would think.

HAS GOOGLE ADDED CONSECUTIVE IP FILTER by Kent
Do you have any info from any of your readers similar. Google changed their way of doing business. It looks like, any sites that have consecutive IP numbers and are linking, got totally shit canned. They even went so far as to apply Googles Page Ranking to the Yahoo listings.

Guru-O-Gif writes:
does anyone have any additional info on this...if so, email me andy@lips.com
it makes sense that that would be an excellent spam filter since most consec IPs would be inflating links to their pages for ranking....interesting

I was aware of this and at one point changed all my pages on a fairly busy site (75,000/day), and here is what I found...

Have you ever noticed that alot of times when you go to a page, you get some of the page, then a second later you get the rest? Well, after removing all the carrige returns it seemed as though the browsers had a harder time deciphering the pages..

I know this doesn't follow logic, but without the carrige returns I had about a 2 second delay before anything would display in my browser, then the whole page would display at once...

REGARDING VISA'S NEW PASSWORD POLICY from Craig the Programmer
Craig writes
www.msnbc.com/news/666737.asp
Apparently visa is setting up a new service to allow merchants to prompt visa holders for a password to 'verify their identity' when making a purchase. The whole idea is that by now requiring mailing address, card number, expiry date and a password online purchases will be more secure.

1 - How will these passwords be updated and changed? Does this mean we all now have to access a central visa site? And if so how do we still prove our identity? Assume someone gets ahold of my visa number and expiry however I haven't as of yet accessed this visa site, they register the card and choose a password of their own. Now they can still make all the purchases they want.

2 - How does this save us from the merchants? As much as we'd like to believe merchants are always honest, events in the past have proven that to not be true. I remember years ago when some of the larger sex sites were shut down and the owners prosicuted for doing multiple charges and increasing amounts in the hopes the cardholders wouldn't notice. The merchants would have access to the password when the transaction is done so what's to stop them from using that information on another online site to make a purchase?

3 - This is what scares me the most. Does the 'password' feature make life all that much harder when dealing with Visa in regards to fraud complaints? Assume my security issue #1 or 2 happens and purchases get made online without my consent. Will Visa just say "Well I'm sorry, the correct password was used....we'll look into the matter but for now the charges stay with the interest accumulating?".

I think the best security method is the method you hype about with Amex with the one time usage numbers. With that system the fraud is virtually non-existant and is very safe. The only possible problem you have is having that purchase be overcharged but that in itself is easy enough to take care. But there are no worries of recurring billings, double charges, fraud usage etc.

BUILDING YOUR FIRST COMPUTER from Greg
Greg writes
Question: for folks building their own computers from parts bought at outlets. Parts are kick ass and cheap. So what advice do you and the sexswap crew have? Who's got the skinny on tools, books and ways to do it right?

Guru-O-Gif
Great quesiton! and this makes for a great article in the newsletter! I think books are probably outdated as soon as they are written. It is probably easiest to find tutorials online that show how to do it. Again, since things change so fast, even they become old quickly. I will list a few tutorials, and then I will describe how I think is the best way to tackle such a project. Please be aware that you generally do not save ay money building your own computer anymore. Those days are long gone. You will build a very custom computer and will learn just a ton about hardware. I recommend that everyone try building at least one computer in their life....it really is rewarding and fun. Greg also wrote me one more reason to build your own...propriotary systems like Dell etc are much more difficult to crack open and add parts too. the boxes are more sealed and the systems are loaded with propriatary software. This is one great reason to try it yourself.

PRO-LEVEL BLACK BELT IN BEAST BOXOLOGY
you can read those tutorials, or you can get the quick and dirty sexswap pro-level method of tackling your first ever attempt at a dream machine...but that is what other sites call them..here there are referred to as BEAST BOX :)

SHOPPING LIST
There are essentially 15 components that make up a basic, yet slick, computer. You may already own some of these in your computer junk drawer and may not need all of them. If this is your first ever box, I think it is best to start simple. There will be plenty of computers in your future and you can tackle the BLACK BELT beast box on your second build. I am not saying it can't be rocket fast, but I am saying that RAID level 5 with four firewire hard drives is more complex that I would want to start with.

FIFTEEN COMPONENTS
01. CPU
02. MOTHERBOARD
03. RAM
04. VIDEO CARD
05. HARD DRIVE
06. MONITOR
07. ETHERNET CARD or MODEM
08. CASE
09. CDROM
10. SOUND CARD
11. KEYBOARD
12. FLOPPY
13. MOUSE
14. SPEAKERS
15. OPERATING SYSTEM

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS
these are important since this is where you can make the most compatability mistakes. We need to select things that work with each other

1. CPU ($50-$500)
this is the computer processor like a Celeron, Pentium III, Pentium IV, or AMD. Sometimes these come with fans and sometimes they don't and then we get to buy aftermarket fun additional items. The other pitfall here is that there are several styles of chips...FCPGA, slot 1, socket A, and socket 370 to name a few and this is where things can get confusing.

2. MOTHERBOARD ($50-$300)
aka mobo, this is also critical since this will determine which CPU you can use and which parts plug into it

3. RAM ($25-$150) you do not want cheap ram. Ram will bite you in the ass if you go cheap. to save $12 you will wreck a system. The only thing you need to know about ram is crucial.com. Trust me on this one...only buy ram there and you will never have a ram headache. It is just that simple. You want at least 128MB ram now a days and since it is so cheap, you might opt to go 256, or 512, or even 1024MB aka the BIG GIG of RAM!

THE NEXT SIX SEMI IMPORTANT ITEMS
these items are not as critical as the top ones, but they can effect system overall coolness and performance.

4. VIDEO CARD ($12-$350)
If you are a 'no-frill fred', then a $12 video card just might make you pee your panties. This is like your basic 4 door Kia. It will work fine. You jus won't win any drag races with it and if you play games, it will be slow as toast. For email and reading websites...this is all you need. If you want speed, and price is no object, you can spend close to $400 to be leading edge.

5. HARD DRIVE ($75-$500)
You mainly want a good drive with a pile of storage. The two most popular style of drives are IDE and SCSI. For your first box, I suggest going with IDE since with SCSI, you need additional items (scsi contriollers). IDE is cheaper and simpler.

6. MONITOR ($199 - $2000)
It is time to belly up to the bar. Throw that 15" out the window. Toss that 17" down the stairs. We want 19" minimum and maybe 21" if you are feeling brave :)

7. ETHERNET CARD OR MODEM ($15-$75)
Do you dial up to the internet on a phone line...then you need a modem. Do you use DSL or cable...then you need an ethernet card. Here is one of those areas where I like to not go cheap but there are several sub $20 cards that work pretty good

8. CASE ($30 - $400)
There are a lot of choices here. Do you want a large tower, or a mid tower, or a 1U rackmount or something in between.

THE LAST BUNCH OF CRUD ITEMS
these are in most systems and there is usually not much need to get fancy on these items

09. CDROM ($30-$50)
they come in a few speeds and black or white

10. SOUND CARD ($10-$200)
there is not much reason to get fancy here. The older cards are still awesome and work great. I have rarely heard a bad sound card on even the cheapest of boxes

11. KEYBOARD ($10-$100)
this is more about personal preference. every keyboard has its own spring and feel. Some people like mushy-clicky and some like stiff-quiet. Some like big honking boards with 200 keys and some like the mini Happy Hacking keyboard :)

12. FLOPPY ($15)
these are $15 but if you search hard you can find them for $14. These are crud pieces

13. MOUSE ($10-$90)
now I consider a mouse important if you are a gamer. You can get a cheap mouse. I really really like the laser mice. They are so smooth. I also like USB mice...but NOTE...sometime USB mice make it a little trickier to load the OS so you might have to tab around on your keyboard until you boot. This is not too bad but be aware that if you go all USB and have an older mobo, you may hit a few snags. Not killer snags, but bumps in the road.

14. SPEAKERS ($10-$400)
here again it all depends on the person. Some people don't need much more than some coke cans with string. If you are a gamer...you gotta get the BASE woofer.

15. OPERATING SYSTEM ($0-$300)
This is sometimes left out. Do you have a CD copy of WindowsXP or 2000 or ME in your software drawer...then you probably don't need to buy one but if you don't have one, they you have to get the operating system somewhere.

SHOW ME THREE SAMPLE SYSTEMS
Now let's forget all tghe theory above, it is time to build and one of the easiest ways to build is with a list. I will use the 15 list to make sure nothing is missed

BASIC BEAST BOX FOR BETTY #1
$894.00
1000MHZ - 156ram - 30gig hd - 19" monitor

and this price includes and monitor and the XP cd for OS so if you have some of this already, it would be cheaper.

01. CPU - PIII 1000 / 133fsb / FCPGA $147
with fan and heatsink
www.googlegear.com/ggweb/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80606
what does all that crap mean? I warned you that this is the area where troubles can occur with mobo and CPU. Really you pick the mobo first and then CPU. The chip is a pentium3 and is a 1gig or 1000mhz chip. This is pretty fast but there are 2 gig chips out today. 133 fsb is the speed of the front side bus and matches the mobo. FCPGA means it is a flat chip and this is what fits our motherboard.

LAST MINUTE THOUGHTS ON BEAST BOXi

ONLINE SELLERS
these are the sites I like the most..some have hard URLs to publish so I don't use them as much as I would like in the stories. These are my 5 fav
www.mwave.com
www.googlegear.com
www.cdrexoress.com
www.motherboardespress.com
www.crucial.com

HOW DO I PUT IT TOGETHER
It is not hard. The motherboard comes with a booklet and it tells you how to plug everything in. The only hard part are these little cables for the on off switch and lights to the mobo but the books tell you how. The last hard thing is booting up and installing the softwware..usually you just put in the windows CD and boot and follow the instructions. If you hit snags...call or email friends or drop me a note. If you think a part is broke, try to find another around home to test. Keep all receipts and packages until you know things are working. Go slow...take your time. It might take you two hours to build you first one that 6 hours to loads stuff...it might go faster...take your time and take breaks if you hit snags.

WHERE DO I GET CABLES
they all come with the mother board. NOTE...if you want fancy shmancy cables, like the round red and black ones, you have to find them online like at
www.plycon.com/
www.cyberguys.com/
and remember, most round pretty cables are not ATA100 for the HD...so you have to look harder to find them if you want them. The ones that come with the mobo will be standard issue, good ribbon cables.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP
you are headed into a bold new world where there is no tech support. Well there is but it is weak ass. We have to take the bull by the horns and use the internet. Here are places that I go for help...I find it is much more useful to ask your fellow man than it is to email motherboard tech support.

NEWSGROUPS
Most big motherboards have a group like
ASUS
30 MORE MOBOS
groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.comp.periphs.mainboard

BULLETIN BOARDS
these are even better sometimes. I use them frequently for help
TOM'S
www.community.tomshardware.com/community/wwwthreads.pl
MAD ONION
discuss.madonion.com/forum/wwwthreads.pl

If I am confused on what to buy or need help, you will get many answers from these groups. I asked the ASUS newsgroup last week on how fast I can make a P2B-LS and I asked on Tom's and Mad Onion on if I can use the new Raedon 8500 in the P2B-LS mobo. I have 15 answers in 2 days.

MICROSOFT
when you buy the CD OS, this entitles you to some phone call support. This is very helpful if you run into software trouble. if you don't buy a CD, then no support. I have always found MS tech support to be outstanding and they can help out in a software crisis that is OS caused.

WHAT FANCY STUFF COULD I ADD
if you are feeling brave, you could add a SCSI drive and SCSI controller. You could add and ID controller for speed. You might add a CD-R. You might add a DVD. You might add a DVD burner. You might add a removable SCSI hot swap couple of drives. You might forget this giant cases and go for that trim thin 1U that I love. Again, the big trouble with the 1Us currently is HEAT. To get these speeds you would need radiator or peltier cooling for such trix in a 2 " high case. You could add a joystick and crud. You could go with a flatscreen monitor but they are pricey. You could add a zip drive or a flash card reader etc. Again, if this is your first box...I would start slow and go basic and then add on once you are up and running.

feel free to drop me a note on any of this or those of you who have built your own boxes, feel free to share the stories or deals etc andy@lips.com

THOUGHTS ON GINGER by Guru-O-Gif
I'll have to say that I am one of the 'doomsayers' 8^)

I personally think this is an example of 'group think'. The investors have all hyped themselves and if this goes anywhere, I will eat my show. Here are some examples to think about and see if you agree or disagree. First, grab an engineer or two and we could sit down and design, and in a week, have a 4 wheel prototype that does everything this does...with one exception...it does not float on 2 wheels. So our model would be a little bigger and cost $5000 to develop (not $100m). Now we have a scooter...which it really is...without the magic gyroscope. Would anyone use it? No. I think investors are in love with the technology of the magical balance...but that still doesn't make it a great idea. Would this be used in california...never. People travel hundreds of miles a day in their cars. I could not even get to a hardware store and back on a charge. Would they use it in canada? no...it would be useless in the winter and the distances are great. Would they use this in New York. Maybe...but new problems arise...the sidewalks in the morning are PACKED...so you cannot travel any faster than walkers...so why not walk...otherwise you risk running them down etc. Would they use this in Taiwan? maybe. From what I have read...the streets are absolutely packed and there would be no room....AND...no one there will buy one over a bike since at $3000US, they would be a fortune. The bike is the only economical means...AND does not require electiricty. Will warehouses use it....maybe. Richard the engineer tells me most modern warehouses for a Honda or Toyota are almost 100% automated...so there is no need. Maybe some places need them to run stuff around. Golf Cart? Maybe...need a spot for my bag...let's say you add it...I bet you can buy 2 four man golf carts over the price of 4 of these AND golf carts are dead simple technology and are used to getting beat on and wet etc. Maybe the post office can use them or newspaper delivery boys. I just see no use for this product except entertainment. The floating on two wheels clouds people's minds on the reality in my opinion. email me if you want to disagree or agree andy@lips.com
