You and I have been predicting this all along!
WARNING...do not take my stock advice - > stocks are risky and you will lose the farm 8-)
that being said...here is my thoughts on Amazon. Amazon still has not had a profitable quarter. I think this quarter if they make it into the black. If this occurs, I believe they will go from $10 to $30. The proof is the stock GOTO which is now Overature (who was the fucking marketing genius who thought up the name 'overature') and Overature announced being in the black last month and here is the stock pattern

I also believe that the online retial sector, combined with the end of the war in Afghanistan, combined with historically low interest rates, will be the fire that ignites the markets next year.

The Sexy Emma from canada dropped me a few ICQs yesterday and we both bantered about various ways we were battling the virus. Here are some snippets. If anyone has any ideas or better ways to catch this nasty thing...please email andy@lips.com for next weeks letter

Emma
a friend of mine had it lie dormant on his
machine for 10 days- that's when it screwed up
his computer and I received my first email
from him at the same moment.

A.D
it is the top of the charts right now
vil.mcafee.com/
since I use a wierd emailer...i get it but I
dont think it gets passed out. I need to scrub
my computer again today since I got it at
least three times this morning from people. I
have never seen a virsu this fierce

Emma
cant even filter it out in my rules wizard.
Damn thing installs itself as soon as the
email is previewed.
I was using moosoft's "the cleaner" but it
isnt picking it up, so I went for norton today

A.D
how is norton working on it?

Emma
well I'm finding norton annoying in general,
but it seems to be catching them every 5
minutes.
I just had one come in now though that looks
like one that Norton let through

A.D
mcafee does not seem to be snagging them and I
am not sure why

Emma
I was told earlier today that macaffee hasnt
got an update for them yet
but for $2.95 / minute they can teach you how
to get rid of it

A.D.
I bought that...I paid the $29 per call and it
was WAY over 10 minutes and we still never got
my wifes computer working right...I can't get
mcafee running on hers for some reason

Emma
I'm not sure how norton is supposed to work,
but I downloaded the free trial today and it
says it's good for a year

AMD CHIP ARE HOT from Gus the (SexSwap) Programmer
Gus writes:
As far as AMD is concerned I would never buy one until they get their power down and their reliability up. I have a friend that dropped off the computer from hell. I have it isolated to being a thermal problem. Not sure if its the power, chip or mobo. But I can get it to fail at low temperatures. Maybe it fried something before when it got hot with the collection of dust. Not sure but the dang mobo has no BIOS to report the tempature like ASUS boards have. Its a &*^&*^ Compaq and has a proprietary power supply in a micro ATX case. I hooked up the power to my Asus board and its voltages are not great but everything worked ok. If I keep the box open and let it cool it appears to run much better. So I convinced my friend to just let me put all the parts in a standard case with a new Asus mobo and Intel chip. The $250 is much cheaper then me scratching my head for a week.

So I was telling this story to another engineer I do work for and he just laughed. He knows several guys that have fried AMD chips. I hope AMD keeps the pressure on Intel to keep them honest but AMD needs to fix the heat and reliability issues for me to try one.

Now to compare remember when we overclocked the Celery chip. We needed to get the super cooling fan to make it work. Well my fan was late getting here so I just ran the Celery chip overclocked anyhow. It ran just fine without the heatsink or fan. I know this was stupid to try but it shows how much manufacturing quality Intel has and how they truely are screwing us with the marketing machine because we could be running the chips faster if they would let us.

SPLIT LOOM TUBIN FOR COLLING from Joe

MPC said it would allow more airflow through a system and make all the wiring neater. I picked some up and bundled up all the loose cables in my system, not only did it drop system temp 2F it made it look cooler! I was thinking this could help airflow through your 1U.

MYSQL LIMITATIONS AND HOW TO GET AROUND THEM from Guru-Of-Gif
Craig the programmer hit some additional hurdles this week when on the 7th day of heavy spidering, the DB blew up. Why? Craig did some investigating and the file was there yet it was invisible. It seems to die right at the 2gig mark. Craig emailed me that there seemed to be a 2gig limitation. We began doing research and I dug some interesting stuff up at DevShed forums. There actually is a 2G/4G limit in mysql depending on what OS etc and you can see it in this chart here
www.mysql.com/doc/T/a/Table_size.html

The work around is to use more smaller tables and then MERGE them with the MERGE secret trick commands

I was reading through my usual 40 newsgroups and came across this post. Its from a guy in Japan who's cable provider offer an amazing 100mbp pipe to your home!!!! I have included the post below, but it just shows what can be achieved if your provider does it right and has the cash. 100mbp to your home, that's is just unbelievable. I'm in Scotland and were are JUST getting Cable and ADSL at 512Kbps MAX so it just shows how far we are behind already. I mean 200 times faster..Zooooooooooooom.

HD CRASH from Jester
Jester writes
Well, my hard drive crashed. I just turned it on one day and it would not boot up. Tried the HP recovery disk and I shortly get the message *file allocation tables bad, recovery aborted* The recovery disk will not even solve the problem! Do you know of a way to save my data or transfer it in spite of the fact that the FAT is bad?

Guru-Of-Gif writes
well there are probably a few ways but it will take some experimenting

One thing I would try first that is cheap is
1. buy a new HD and load the OS and have it as the primary
2. boot up with the new HD and OS are primary and old broke HD as secondary
3. see if you can then see the old HD and try to move the data onto the new HD

it might be that just the OS is corrupt and not the drive

if the data is valuable, you can send it to a HD recovery specialist. I have used these in the past but expect to pay anywhere for $1k-$3k. Here are a ton of them that advertise on the right hand side of google
www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hard+drive+recovery&btnG=Google+Search

if anyone has additional techniques, please email andy@lips.com with your solutions

UPDATE ON AMD HOT BOX by Gus
Gus writes
Hey before you go blasting AMD I have to admit it was not there fault on this one. Yes the chip runs hot and a little dust blowing dropped the temp a lot. But more testing showed the main problems were a bad floppy and CD burner. Strange but these devices would appear to work but would intermittantly take the system down.

LOW COST AND EASY SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION from Kal
Kal asks
I know your opionion of SE submission services, but I am in a spot where it would be more ecomical to pay a small fee to have a dozen domains submitted for me. I don't really know much about them. I have used some in the past but don't know whether they are good or crud. I tested ineedhits.com, after 6 weeks, 0 hits to the url I tested, and they keep sending me mail to upgraded. I have a feeling that the majority of people who buy this kind of service either don't read their stats and believe they are getting traffic, or they are already have traffic from SEARCH ENGINES and can't tell the diff from what they have and the nothing that company does.

Guru-Of-Gif writes
I would agree and I don't think you should pay too much since this might be what you get everywhere. AND just because you get submitted, does not mean it will work

Kal writes
But I still have to ask the Guru, can you recommend an affordable/honest company that will actually mass submit for you?

Guru-Of-Gif writes
I personally trust the software that you run yourself more that the services. If you want a nice web based one...try this from hitbox
www.hitbox.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?tools/sub
It hits the BIG 17 engines...the small engines are rarely worth your time. you might consider trying the 30 day trial of submission wizard...I started with it years ago and it is simple enough and powerful and you can watch it submit. There are more powerful solutions that you can have custom programmed, but they time and cost $$$ so I would try these easy solutions first.

THOUGHTS ON GOTO'S SUGGESTION TOOL from Steve
Steve writes
By the way, here is a very interesting article about overture's suggestion tool:
searchengineforums.com/Forum17/HTML/000994.html

Guru-Of-Gif writes:
that is an interesting article on the engines..the point they are missing is that searches are not clicks and so goto's suggestion tool reports searches...if the click rate is 0.005% or half a percent that 50,000 * .005 = 250 clicks a month or 10 a day and this is very much like 2-4 clicks a day per top 5 listings so I tend to disagree that they are way over inflated...I think people do not do the math of searches vs clicks

ALL ABOUT COBRA KITCARS
Rick writes
That car is fuckin gorgeous. When are you gonna tell us how much you've got sunk into her.

Guru-O-Gif writes:
thanks! That was one hell of a project and it is still trying to kill me with the last few bugs. I never thought it would end. I have way too much into the money pit. I was using a spreadsheet until the 6 months point at it was $45k. after that I stopped keeping track since I was getting sick to my stomach :) I guess I went 10-15k over that....I am going to be sick. I am a very poor budgeter. I think you could build the same car for $45k if you were frugal. I think if I had to sell my car tomorrow that it would sell for $39k.

Guru-O-Gif adds:
Now cobra kits have a wide range in price, depending on the manufacturer of the kit and what options you choose. You can build some very nice cobras for under $20k if you can control the urge to upgrade. One of the least expensive, but very cool kits is called FFR or Factory Five Racing. Some people have built these for $18k! And others spend $40k on the same car
www.factoryfive.com

At the high end of the spectrum is Superformance. They don't even sell kits...just finished cars. They say they start at $36k but I have never met anyone that spent less than $50k on a SPF and I have met a couple with over $80k in these foolish cars that have the ability to sepearate a person from his good sense :)
www.superformance.com/cars.asp?flash=0

At the ultra high end of the spectrum are replicas that use an actual aluminum body, just like the original. These you are $65k-$90k. Ouch! The bodies are works of art and I would be scared to drive them
www.kirkhammotorsports.com/home.cfm

AND at the top of the heap is the original Carroll Shelby cars which ALSO now make kits. These are $100k+ for a kit. The original cobras from the 1960's now sell for $250k to $500k each!
www.shelbyamerican.com/cobra/index.html

Mark writes:
Congrats on the paint, looks high speed/low drag... Now, did you 'break' clutch or burn the plate trying to catch 3rd??? ...lol... ;o)

Guru-O-Gif writes:
hee hee haaa. Well I WISH I had broken it squeeling out but that was not the case. We were taking pics of the car for the JBL website and then we heard all this noise and though the rocker arms were hitting. I pushed in the clutch and the noise got worse. I then left to head home...30 seconds later the clutch hit the floor! EEK! I glided to the side of the road and cel phoned for help. I am still not sure what happened but we have two explanations.

1. I did not use a clutch stop and the throw out bearing might of over travelled and bent or damaged the metal fingers on the clutch housing

2. The bearing might of over travelled and popped out of its case a bit and lost fluid

3. same as 2 except blew an O ring on the inside of that bearing

so now I have been laying on my back on the garage floor once again as I attempt to remove the transmission which is a painfully long operation and may take a few days just to get to a stinky little part :)

HTML HARDWARE CODE ACCELERATORS
