I am barely awake! Where is that coffee. It is a fun filled week of thrills, spills and chills here at SexSwap news. Last week I got so carried away that I forgot the Trix Bag O Salt Table of Content and will fix that today on the web archive. No huge tricks this week but some interesting stories just the same. I am going to start off with another FTC VS WEBMASTERS case that hit the news yesterday and the day before with a verdict. Next we have the TOP TEN IQ MASTERS :) ...that IQ test was the most popular article in all of last week. I found some more out there..I will try and find some for a future issue. I next want to tell you about our new site GAMMADRUGS.COM. I remember in the book I enjoyed so much from Linux Torvalds, one of my favorite quotes from his was "don't discuss abortion or gun ownership with an american in a bar" ...hee hee hee. I think the same is becoming true on the WTC. Several webmasters emailed me with some great diverse opinions on the subject...I thank you for your input. I realize that I have the very unpopular opinion of the pacifist...this week I include the interview with Phil Donahue on this very minorty opinion that is interesting as well. I also have a scary article on the KILLING MANUAL of the AL-QAIDA'S which incidentally tells how to lace food etc with ANTHRAX (and you may remember they stated "we don't even know what anthrax is")

Let's see what else is here...a great email on a mainstream project but one of our readers called Coupon Boulevard. There is also a long story from SexSwap's favorite attorney "Mike" with regards to the little guy fightng the big guy in a made up patent suit. Remember last week we talked about watching and restarting linux processes...well the best trick of the week is that IceDemon found an exact command to do it in UNIX already built in! I had also planned to talk about th hardware upgrades this week but I am not done and hit 745 snags. I will let you know that 50% of my CPU upgrades worked and 50% failed. My AMD box will post but can't see the HD...I may ask you about that in the trix section. At the very end section this week, I am saving the best for last. If you want to sit by the christmas fire and hear stories of the early years of porn, join me as I reminisce. Sign Guy sent it the most awesome web link I have seen in years...The WAY BACK machine which is an internet archiving service that I had no idea even existed (but I had hoped one did). If you are an old timer, or even a new timer, you will not want to miss this. Have your old URLs ready...this is way too fun.

On with the show!

ADULT SITES SETTLE FRAUD CLAIM WITH FTC AND AGREE TO PAY $30M from Dan + Zig
From the last press release like this, I think we need to take it with a grain of salt since it was probably written by the FTC. It looks to be recurring billing once again under the gun. The FTC said the settlement requires the defendants to get express permission from consumers before billing them in the future, and requires them to keep records to ensure compliance.

IQs FLUCTUATE from Michael
I.Q isn't a constant. A good mood will produce a higher I.Q than a bad or anxious mood in the same person. Have you noticed the way crossword puzzles are easier when you're happy? High I.Q's can also represent an individual's inability to discriminate between what's worth knowing and what's isn't! Also who's to say that a person who can fix an engine is any more or less intelligent than someone who can write a beautiful song? I got 142 in a MENSA test. Very flattering but complete crap.

GAMMADRUGS.COM - CHECK IT OUT
www.gammadrugs.com
At Gamma, we are making our first venture into mainstream with Gamma Drugs. It actually is a nice cross over since one of the most popular drugs online is Viagra. there are 14 drugs to start out with. Right now we are paying $40 for all Viagra orders and $20 for all other drug orders. VIAGRA MERIDIA PHENTERMINE XENICAL PROPECIA VANIQA ZYBAN CELEBREX CLARITIN RENOVA RETIN-A VALTREX FAMVIR DOXYCYCLINE

I haven't tried promoting viagra yet but a few people have written me who have been very successful at it. I will probably give it a test in the next month or so with my lips traffic and see how it converts. I asked Karl where are the doctors working on the project. Karl writes:
"We work with a few doctors right now in Florida, they must have a license to consult on the internet and issue prescriptions."

COMMENTS ON WTC from Charles
The article on putting hidden messages in graphics was
interesting. In America "experts" always try to find or identify
a high-tech scenario and forget that a low-tech solution can be
not only just as effective but also attract less attention. For
example, while the Bush Administration was arguing that the "only
way" to protect the US from attack was to have a space based
missile defense system while totally missing the possibility of
hijacking a jetliner loaded with fuel and turning it into a human
guided missile.

airport security....I work at o'hare in chicago putting that wonderful stuff they call food on the airplanes...been doing it 14 years now. During the gulf war, all we had to do was lock the back of the truck. Now.........the truck is locked, sealed, each individual cart is sealed & recorded, I get frisked by security at least twice a day out on the "ramp", there are bomb sniffing dogs on about every 5th plane I go near & i'd say there is an air marshall on every 3rd plane I do. I have no problem with it because I look in the windows & see these families & little kids & I know that people are at least trying to make everyting safer.

ONLINE SHOPPERS WANT CONVIENIENCE NOT PRICE from Richard
this is something I have always believed. I shop online because it is easy and efficient, not because it is cheap and I think online stores taht compete on price are shooting themselves in the foot. Amazon could double their prices tomorrow and you still would not see me getting in my car and going down to Barnes and Nobles. If you value "time", then you time is worth money and shopping online saves time.

AWEOMS NON-PORN SITE IDEA - COUPON BLVD. from Michael
Michael sent me an email to show me his mainstream efforts. Here is a really sharp site that is professionally made and easy to navigate. The costs are low to maintain and if it gets enough traffic, could be a great income maker. Here is what Michael has to say
Michael writes:
Hi andy, I don’t know if you wanna put it into the newsletter, I don’t mind if you do, but here’s what I’ve been working on..Maybe uve seen stuff like this before J, hell, you buy everything on the net, for sure you have, but here goes
www.couponblvd.com

a shopping –savings portal of sorts ( I know there are other ones out there on the net, everything on this one is custom developed for me) I’m still adding and changing every day, and some stuff (pictures on top and freebies on left) is randomized as I want to get a good idea of what people like to click on and buy..I have a fairly coherent way to control the whole thing via the web, adding stores, new coupons, pictures, etc, if you want I can send you some screenshots..Its not nearly any kind of big bucks or close to paying for itself, but I’m doing some careful keyword purchasing, and giving it some light promotion out of my porn sites as a “non porn major Christmas savings on net’s biggest retailers” kind of link And I’m seeing some traffic and some people buying stuff Best case scenario – this thing gets fairly big, I can throw together a few more similar sites & interlink & promote the whole thing up. Worst case scenario – 15-20 minutes of updating a day & I can get ahold of some pretty safe recurring traffic from se’s , and some side income from those bigger players (commission junction, linkshare, etc) which aren’t bound to disappear any minute J

When viewing the image
with virtually any viewer you would have little clue that there
is a hidden message, but there is such a message. If you happen
to have a viewer such as VuePrint
www.hamrick.com
you would be able to not only view the message but also insert a reply.

As the Guru-O-Gif, you surely know that someone can insert a
comment in a GIF file that is up to 32K in size. A 32K message
is huge and would hardly ever be used because it would be more
likely to be suspect. However, a 1-3K message (still quite
lengthy) could be inserted without much risk of detection. When
you consider that there are literally hundreds of thousands of
new gif files posted to newsgroups and sent via email every day
you can quickly understand that the task of searching every GIF
file for hidden comments would be a daunting task. What do you think?

By the way, The GIF Construction Kit also makes it quite
easy to insert and edit GIF comments. Of course, both The GIF
Construction Kit and VuePrint are both available as shareware.

COMMENTS AND STORIES ON PATENT LAW from Mike
In the following new item a small new jersey patent holder may have to do battle with giants such as MS, Sun and IBM
news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-7670947.html?tag=dd.ne.dtx.nl-sty.0

I asked SexSwap's favorite patent attorney "Mike" what he thought about the story. He wrote in with a long and fun story on how the little guy can win.

Mike writes:
Novell's explanation for citing earlier patents--essentially calling them just
a footnote--fits a common strategy, according to legal experts. When a company
realizes that it may be in danger of violating someone else's patent, it will
try to get its own in a carefully worded claim that seeks to skirt the
existing patent.

They didn't do a good job in the story explaining this. Being able to get your
own patent, distinguishing it from a previous one, has no bearing on whether you
infringe the claims of a previous one. Here is an example turned fable to
illustrate the point.

Little printing company A, after a long R&D effort by its entire staff of three
engineers and one technician, has invented the photocopier. They have scraped
together enough cash to hire good legal counsel by eating at Arby's for three
months straight and have obtained a broad basic patent that covers all
photocopiers. They are now the only company that can make or sell photocopiers
and are making a nice return on their profit. But their resources are limited,
especially marketing, and their product is slow to catch on. Still, they
upgrade to class B office space in the City of Industry.

Behemoth company B, industry leader in printing technology, has been trying to
put company A under for years and is jealous over A's success in this new
market. It realizes that with its resources it can make a fortune. After
firing their head of business planning for missing the boat on this new market,
they read the technical details in company A's patent and their brilliant
scientist, Dr. BLove, comes up with a particular method for making color copies,
a method that was not described or even mentioned as a possibility in company
A's patent (maybe A's counsel wasn't so good). Other less brilliant members of
the company B engineering group work on other improvements to the photocopier.
Company B has legions of good in-house counsel willing to work 80 hour weeks and
knows it can get a patent for this new color photocopier because it was not
described by company A in their patent, or described by company A or anyone else
at any trade show, or in any publication etc.. They ultimately get 14 different
patents with a total of 246 claims on photocopiers having color capability, with
sorters, built in staplers, copiers on wheels, copiers that go "beep" . . . you
get the picture. Of course, each of these patents mention in its background
section the original patent that A obtained because it is pretty darn relevant.

Company B cannot sell any photocopiers with these new features because company A
holds the basic patent for all photocopiers. They consider litigation, but even
their great lawyers realize that A will fight to the end, and will definitely
win in court (maybe A's lawyers were okay after all). So they start talking to
the customers of company A saying that B can build a better copier if it weren't
for evil company A. Soon company A is fielding angry phone calls from
customers. Not able to afford a tortious interference with contract action for
the muckraking done by B, and knowing that because of B's 14 new patents, they
won't ever be able to sell more than the basic black and white copier that they
originally invented, company A is forced to consider the idea of a cross-license
with company B. Negotiations at the 53rd floor conference center of B.Behemoth
Tower begin. Unknown to A, the chairs provided for A's president and his one
lawyer attending the meeting are three inches shorter than the chairs occupied
by the 12 members of the B negotiating team.

The fatigued president and founder of company A lays in bed, empty scotch bottle
at his side, the night before signing an agreement that will cross-license his
company's crown jewel with the 14 company B patents. As he cocks the hammer of
his 38, he knows in his heart that a decade down the line his company will be a
bit player in this market at best, an historical footnote remembered mostly by
patent lawyers. A sigh causes the scotch bottle to fall to the floor with a
crash, and slowly a wicked smile crosses his face as an equally wicked idea
crosses his mind.

The next day, company A announces that they are leaving the photocopier business
and are instead willing to license their patent to companies wanting to enter
the business. A reasonable fee of 8% of the net selling price of the product
will be charged for the privilege of using this pioneering technology. No
longer making photocopiers, company A is now immune from the oppression of the
14 company B patents. Immediately four new companies, including leaders in the
photography, and paper industries, come forward wanting to be a part of this new
industry and all take licenses from company A. Many have their own
"improvement" patents on file at the patent office already, including one method
for making color copies that is not only different from, but blows away the
method invented by Dr. BLove. Company A, as is its right, declines to license
its technology to company B. With price competition among the four new
manufacturers in the industry, photocopiers are sold by the millions and company
A makes so much money that its president later purchases a controlling share in
company B. And they lived happily ever after. I'm not sure what the moral of this story is, but once I got going, I couldn't stop.

The companies in this story are fictional, any relation to actual companies is
coincidental and not intended. Legal outcomes may vary depending on the facts
of each situation. Copyright 2001 MLT.

If you remember my specs were

1. PIII or PIV
2. on board video
3. ATA 100
4. ECC RAM (error checking)

This was an impossible task so I had to settle for ATA66 with non ECC RAM. But I got the Asus CUA, which is a smokin' mobo for Linux and although not the fastest kid on the block this puppy can serve up some web pages like mad or hum along quietly as a dns server.

I had to run the ribbon cable for the drives over the top of the HD and there was no choice but to make sharp folds for the turns. If I put it in front it would interfere with the internal cooling fans and I didn't want that. Luckily there is a cunt hair of room between the lid and the drives so it wasn't a big deal. I only worry that one day those sharp creases will cause problems.

I hear so much about OpenBSD being so secure and even read somewhere that it has been like a few years or something since a remote break in was officially reported and like a year since a local break in??? I looked for my source for that with no luck. I can't remember where I read it. Maybe someone else has heard this?? Anyway. It's not too entirely different from Slack and the install is pretty easy too. You ever install FreeBSD? The install can be somewhat daunting for a novice *nixer because it starts right out with compiling the kernel.

WAYBACKMACHINE from SignGuy
www.archive.org/internet/index.html
SignGuy sent me in a link that had me mesmerised for hours. This is a search engine that has access to the internet archiving database. What this means is that they have snapshots of sites from about 1996 and on. This was when everything just started. This is the history of porn! It is freaking more fun that you can shake a stick at!

Here is the young Guru-Of-Gif's site when porn just got going. I would guess this is maybe 6 month in since there are more than two sponsors. Check out the old lips.com in the early days with the fabulous "teaser babe of the day" which was my favorite anuimated gif that flipped back and forth and I would voer up her boobs one day with a fake bikini and say "come back tomorrow and I will take off my top"...a classic ad ploy from "Ogilvy On Advertising" that was used on a billboard in europe.

Ack! "Currently Experiencing Higher Than Expected Volume"
I can't get to the examples I wanted to show! Oh no. People have discovered the WayBack machine and it is now swamped. See if you can get here

In the very early days, there was only two sponsors. I believe Al Hazy started AMATEURHARDCORE.COM and FantasyMan started up CYBEREROTICA.COM These guys were KINGS. Everyone signed up for AMATUERHARDCORE as they paid out 2 whopping cents a click. I think I remember you had to be invited or ask to join Cybererotica early on so it was an elite program. Amateur Hardcore was talked about in Forbes and I think Wall Street Journal and was rumored to be making $50M a year. I believe this number was probably close to the truth since there was no other game in town! AH was on every search engine and every webmaster was sending traffic its way. A handful of programs then appeared to compete. Do you remember MOSTEROTICA when they went to a crazy 3 cents a click! And there was CELEBNUDES or NETBABES I think from Europe that became popular and then closed down. Al Hazy to me is like this mastermind of porn that no one even knows about. Perhaps he is a hermit. He stays off the radar. I believe he is the founder of the very successful iFriends.com today. FantasyMan has had the longest running affiliate programs in the business. MostErotic disappeared. CelebNudes took heat from lawyers and then sold out or closed. In the beginning, they were money printing machines.

Now you may recall I was talking about KidSlick and his new AmatuerRanks sites. You may still call him Rick from YNOT. Well here is the classic of classics...KidSlick and his first site
web.archive.org/web/19961221011008/http://www.kidslick.com/

Rick went on to found YNOTNETWORK. In the beginning it was like an exclusive club where you had to be invited to join and then had to be voted in. At the bottom of this page are the founding members

you will see that mny of the sites are still around in one form or another. The politics and egos became too big and membership was eventually disolved. It was certainly fun well it lasted. Back then, very few people believe in traffic. Most of the members believe in content. I think Legendary Lars and I were the only two in the gang that believe "TRAFFIC = MONEY" and this was a topic of heated debate several times in the members shat area. My site lips.com, had almost no content and was pure ads and I think I was probably close to being kicked out because of the content lacking desing...but it was hard to argue with 37,000 unique hits a day and was the 47th most popular site in the world at that time...hee hee haaa. WOO HOO as shown in this archive from a year later.

That was when there might of been 20 of us spamming the engines. Most of us did it by hand early on using MS word and COPY PASTE and would s[end 2-3 hours a day making doors by hand. It was drudgery but you would get hits the vey next day since AltaVista would index over night. It was so exciting as the money flowed in. At the same time as that last link was when the counter WebSideStory really took off as well. Before them was something I think called WebCounter and they lasted a year or so and then their software just failed, as so many counters and banner exchanges did.

anyways....I could play with that site for hours on end. I think they have a lot of errors in their DB but it is still fun when it works. Check your old URLs and relive the past or research old companies and see how they got their start...way too fun!

those are my stories
