Why not start the day with that flash Halloween classic from Jay and May Ling Su. Warning: :) this is one of those songs that bonds to your head and you can't get it out. "We want some candy, We want some candy". I must of sung that for a month last year and then the wife and I altered it to "we want some coffee, we want some coffee" which is joyously sung around our fresh brewed pot of Star Bucks each morning. Great flash work from Jay and May Ling Su

IN SEARCH OF THE ELUSIVE 1U P4 RACKMOUNT
I spent day after day trying to figure out how to make a 1U rackmount server with a P4 2G chip in it. It is close to impossible. You could do it with a lot of rigging. It seems that the P4s are just coming in and the P3s are slowly getting phased out. P4 1Us should be easier to make in about 4-6 weeks when the servers and heat sinks become available. They require a 12Volt power suplly and need to be kept extra cool which is hard in the space of 1U. I did decide to build a server and upgrade all my servers this week and have about 7 more stories on that and the P4 below. Jim Grill and I search high and low for every spec of info we can get on these rare chips. I did eventually find one case, but they would not call me back so I think they just want to sell it as a completed server when I want to BUILT it with my hands :)

COMMENTS ON AIRPORT SECURITY by Bowers
Bowers writes
I agree about the insane amount of airport security. When you take a loved one to the airport and you aren't allowed through the metal detectors to sit with them or tell them bye when they board a plane then it fucking blows. What good does it do to restrict only ticket holders from going neer the gates? I want to be able to say bye and watch the plane fly off. This security that we are facing is not worth the lack of freedom we will have. The press really needs to start being restricted on hyping people on threats. All it does is cause people to panic for no reason.

You should mention that small pox unlike anthrax doesnt occur in nature and as far as anyone knows russian and us were only ones with it. sno evidence exists anyone has it at all except those 2 countries, no evidence exists that russian ever made tons of it (like they did anthrax). of course anything is possible, but its extremely unlikely. thats why anthrax is being used right now thats easy to get. just dont want to get people pannicking, love this country

COMMENTS ON WTC WAR from DurangoBlond
DurangoBlond writes:
Some people kill to kill, some people kill because they have to. But the fact is KILLING is KILLING! I see the reason for the road blocks and the police stops, the long lines at the airport terminal. but why are that there? For your safety!! You can't fight or defend yourself from a "faceless coward". You can't kill every one of Arabic decent. But some times you have to do what you have to do to save your own people, your way of life, your countries reputation as a super power! You can not let people like this come in to your country and mass mail anthrax and kill anyone they want! Sometimes you have to make a statement that we will no be a terrorist torn country. So this calls for action, big action fast, what do you do BLOW THE HELL OUT OFF THEM! Make them submit! They don't care which one of us they kill so why should we?
They killed our families, friends, our loved ones.

Guru-O-Gif retorts:
"but why are that there? For your safety!!"

I agree we need safety measures. I just want rational safety measures that work. Since the box cutters were stashed on the plane...the correct action would be to set up filters to catch or prevent employees from stashing.

"But some times you have to do what you have to do to save your own people"

The problem is, we are all egocentric. We value our lives MORE than the lives of Afghans. The reason we discount them is because we can. If the terrorists were hiding in a country with another superpower, we would not be doing what we are doing. If the terrorists were hiding in Alaska, and we "oops, we just killed 30 alaskan fisherman when we sunk their boat by accident"....do you think that story would not cause outrage? A human life is a human life...I hate to see innocent people destroyed.

"They don't care which one of us they kill so why should we?"

again...who is our enemy? The Pakistan, and the Afghan people are not our enemy in this. Osama is. The Taliban seems to be. Let's go after Osama is what I would like to see. If only James Bond were around. We could send in one man to sneakily take OBL out.

IQ TEST FUN
I love crap like this. There used to be a great IQ test floating around on the macintosh. IQ tests don't mean anything in my opinion, but are still good fun. I find they heavily favor math folks since many of the word problems are really math problems. Give this bad boy a try and see if you can spank the guru-o-gif ...I got a 132 ...the mac test did 8 years ago I thinkI was a 134 ...so it is neat they are consistant. We quized my whole family and my little cousin who was young and a math brain hit the highest with a 145. I think speed matters but I am not positive and age matters are well.

"I have no reason to think that Al Qaeda is not using steganography," Dr. Johnson said, but he, like others, pointed to no proof. His research, he said, is financed by "law enforcement."

Well I certainly have reason to think he is NOT using them. He lives in a dirt cave. I bet it is hard to find a damn telephone over there, let alone a 28.8k modem, and then try to find an ISP. Maybe the US living terrorists used it but I tend to think they used other means

Quote
"Quite an alarming number of images appear to have steganography in them," said one expert who has looked for them, Chet Hosmer, the president and chief executive of WetStone Technologies in Cortland, N.Y."

Bullshit. Specify alarming? 10? 100? and what do the pictures say? "Kathy, I love your big tits...Steve": ...who cares. How about some details rather than comments that incite fear.

EVIL SPAM REMOVE TRICK from Guru-O-Gif
I just stumbled onto an evil spam trick that someone just did to me. :) It worked rather well and I read 4-5 of the ads and considered clicking them. I would also argue that this style of ad might produce far less hate mail and death threats than most spam. Here is the ad

SUBJECT -> re:remove

BODY -> This is an automatic response to your email. Click on the following link to be removed from our list:

www.hostnp.com/members/GetPaidToReadEmail/

The funny thing is...I NEVER emailed them to be removed...but I automatically clicked it since I do try to get removed from these lists when it is easy like this. How crafty is that. And I was not mad because I thought...hey, how nice, they have made it easy for me to be removed. Then get this....they take a second kick at the sale
on this page you have to click REMOVE/REPLY button and guess where that leads
www.hostnp.com/members/GetPaidToReadEmail/index3.html?

now that is some crafty BS if I have ever seen it :) I am sure the FTC wouldn't like it but I consider it a new angle on spam. Most people do not even know they are getting spam the back door on them....damn fine craftiness.

INITTAB by Delay
Delay writes:
Anyway on your inittab question. The program you need is daemontools not inittab... It is really the best solution and is rock solid.
cr.yp.to/daemontools.html
It is used to keep programs and daemons running 24/7 It checks for crashed processes every 5 seconds and restarts them if one if found. I believe it is the best and free. But it is kind of a bitch to install and get working initially. If you have any questions I may be able to answer them as I just installed a daemon that makes use of it in the last couple of weeks. Also this is for linux/unix not NT. Anyway you should probably think about using this especially if it is a commercial type service you are trying to run.

TRADING UNIQUE CONTENT FOR TRAFFIC from Greg
Greg wrote me this great email last week and I wanted to share an idea that is working for him. He has some rare and unique content that he is finding useful to trade for traffic.
Greg Writes:
One thing that I did that I really have fun is doing FREE toons for
traffic. That's right FREE ORIGINAL toons in exchange for great traffic. I
pick a site I really like that gets great traffic and I offer to do a free
toon series targeted for that site's niche and traffic. Normally it would
cost $50K plus for a long time pro like me to create an original from the
ground floor up toon but this is the web and we improvise and reach for new
frontiers. Well, it works like a charm. I can tailor how much traffic comes
in and direct the traffic to various sites or projects. My latest one is for
Hank at Hanks Galleries (www.hanksgalleries.com). Hank is a good chap who
even pitches in to create his cartoon character. I really enjoy working with
Hank and soon there'll be t-shirts, mousepads, coffee mugs etc. It's a real
kick ass setup to add something special for your surfers.

SETTING DEFAULT KERNEL BOOT by Craig the Programmer
I forgot how to do this so I asked yong craig once again
Craig writes:
Sure not a problem....it is actually quite simple....you just edit the
/etc/lilo.conf file....there is a line there called default ...you change
that value to the name of the kernel you want booted up automatically.
After editing the file you run /sbin/lilo -v for the configuration changes
to take effect. I'll check all the boxes tonight though to make sure
they're booting what they should be.

ISSUES CONCERNING CURRENT 1U RACMOUNT BUILD from Jim
Jim writes
It's strange you mention the 1U's again. I am planning to build two more as well. I was looking today and it reminded me of last year about this time when I built my first one (inspired by the news letter). here is where I join the game (SexSwap 9.9.2000 no.157). I want another PIII, which is fine for the task I'm putting it up to but some of the requirements changed. These will be primary and secondary nameservers on a small network (less than 5,000 domains) and since they are already redundant we don't really need any on board redundancy.

It needs

1. PIII or PIV
2. on board video
3. ATA 100
4. ECC RAM (error checking)

I prefer ASUS mobo's but ASUS does not make a PIV mobo with built in video that I'm aware of. I think that PIV has yet to prove its self as a server class configuration although DDR RAM does come with ECC.

direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc/A02581.html
direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc/A02623.html

The big issue after looking today for a few hours seems to be finding available hardware. We are in a weird transitional stage in computer peripheral land as the PIV is coming around and the PIII is slowly being discontinued. It seems that every mother board I find in stock is lacking in one of my 4 areas.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

4 HURDLE'S TO BUILDING A 1U RACKMOUNT AS OF TODAY by Guru-O-Gif
Guru-O-Gif writes:

1. No Video On the Mobo
Is you love ASUS, you have about 5 choices of boards and none of them have video as of writing this.
www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/socket478.html
www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/socket423.html

this means that things get a little dicey. I believe on a linux server you can use the serial port to talk to a box? I have never tried this and see it as a poor solution if you use a KVM switch. One other choice is to use an AGP adapter card. I do not know of anyone who has tried this since it is a rare solution. I do know where you can get such rare cards :) LAN is on a couple of the boards and this leaves the one slot for video. The LAN is a choice of RealTek or Intel. Craig the programmer tells me he has used RealTek many times and it has worked well. I checked and I believe there are linux drivers for these LAN chips.

2. No Half Height Cooling Fan Rated For a P4
There are handful of 1U half height cooling fans but none of them are yet rated for a P4. This does not mean that they will not work. It does mean that you are pushing the envalope. I have found one or two rated for a AMD 1600+ so I am pretty sure that is enough for a P4 2000mhz. Here are some I have found lately
www.spirecoolers.com/products/5r56b3.htm
direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc2/A14085.html
www.compute-aid.com/1uhsfan.html
www.plycon.com/lpgorb.htm

3. Do the fans fit the new Chip footprints?
Even if you use those fans above, do they fit a 478 pin and 423 pin footprint? There are a couple of radical soultions that might work like a Peltier cooler.
www.leufkentechnologies.com/page8.html
or something like this with brass glued to the chip
www.zalmantech.com/BR123.html

4. Since there is no video on board, you need the rare AGP riser
Well well well, 3 holes in the ground. Here is the site to bookmark for rare risers
www.adexelec.com/product.htm
maybe one of these would work
www.adexelec.com/agp32.htm#AGPTX4-9
ow to be more radical, I would start with this new product since it is more flexible and would allow some misalignment error
www.adexelec.com/agp32.htm#AGPFLEX
If you do use Peltier etc, you have to make sure you have a big enough power supply

5. The ASUS P4 boards require a 4x 1.5v AGP card
Use a AGP4x cards (1.5 volts). Using an AGP 1x or 2x card (3.3 volts) may damage P4 motherboards. Well this is not too bad of a problem. I think I found one for $60...they are usualy on the high side of cheap cards. The ATI Raedon old models say they are 2X4X bus cards and they can be found in the $60s. There may be other cards cheaper.
direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc2/507992.html

that is where my research has lead me so far. There seems to be an enormous amount of cases out there now. Some are less than $200 and some are $600. I have found hot swap dual drive ones for $300...but they require half height cdrom and floppy which is cool but costs more. I think this time I want a box with a 300w or at least 230w power supply. Cheaper boxes all have the very low power supplies which is ok if you don't run much, but if you run a giant drive or peltier and things, then get more power.

P4 1U SERVER - GTWEB TO THE RESCUE from Jim

I called the people at Gtweb today and ordered a few cases and some slide
rails for another unit we have. I asked about P4's.... below...I got this:
www.gtweb.net/cs440.html
in black of course : ) and two fans:
www.gtweb.net/hw125.html

I have decided on two PIII 850 w/ 133 FSB, 512MB non-ecc RAM, ASUS CUA mobo. I ordered almost everything today. When I asked about the P4's they told me that the only thing stopping them was the fan and they were working on a deal with a manufacturer to provide the part. They can't confirm when exactly this will be available but to check back in a few weeks by phone. What they confirmed for sure is that the P4 case will be a new design made with the mounting for the through-the-board heat sink built in so this will be a new case design. I'm exited to see it. They make a good case for a very competitive price.

DOG STORY CORRECTION
I think my sad story from last week was a little confusing. I just wanted to make it clear that it was our two 'regular dogs' that did the attacking (Pepper and Whitey)...the two tiger striped 'pitbulls' (Diva and Candy) did not. Whitey was a dalmation-pitbull mix. I still have no idea why it occured. I think there were just too many dogs in a tight spot and tensions flared. Nature's harsh survival of the fittest.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

PRO-LEVEL PITBULL INFO
I wanted to babble a little more about this breed of dog that is always on the news since there are many myths about them that need to be dispelled. They can make a wonderful pet in the right home. One thing most people don't know is that the majority of Pitbulls love people. If pitbulls hated people, evil dog fighters could not control them and would themselves get attacked each time they tried to fight their dogs. Any 'human agressive' dogs are generally put right to sleep at any pound around the country. Most pounds put pitbulls to sleep automatically. We have probably had 50 pitbulls come through our house on the way to rescue. They are all healthy and happy dogs that are as strong as oxes. My wife likes the smaller female ones. The big trouble with pitbulls is that they do not fight like regular dogs. Regular type dogs fight with their mouth biting and barking, and feet pushing. They make a huge amount of noise and bite many times and generally give up when the weaker dog retreats. Pitbulls do not fight at all like this. They make no sound, and they bite once. The grab something...usualy they go for the neck, and they just will not let go. Their jaws do not lock as many think...they just are programmed from years of idiotic breeding. They clamp on. They then begin to pull and rip. You can beat them on the head with a club....I have, and they will not let go. You can spary pepper spray on them.....I have, and they will not let go. You can yell at them and they will not let go. Sometimes if you wait an hour, they might let go. The only thing that I ever found that worked to break up a pitbull fight was water. Two of my wife's rescues bit each other one day when she was out and we were way at the back of the yard. I grabbed them and was literally laying on them trying to get them to stop...no luck. They were like carrying me around. After 30 minutes of us all looking at each other in an embrace of death as all three of us panted while lying on the ground, I decided to suck up all my energy and drag these dogs 150 feet to our pool. I was able to do this...they never budged or let go....into the pool we went. Dogs do not like drowning and the situation was solved. I have also used the garden hose in the nostril manouver and the 5 gallon bucket of water on the head trick...they all seem to work pretty well...you still have to work some magic once you get them apart so they don't re-grab.

One thing we have learnt over the years is that pitbulls make the best pet as the "only" dog..no buddies. They are not good with other dogs. Let me clarify that. They might love and play and romp around with their buddy for 3 months or 3 years or even 5 years, but a day comes along when a fight happens (common with most dog groups)...and then it is trouble...mainly because of the method they choose to fight by as explained above. Since the fights are much more dangerous than regular dog fights, it then is not good to have two pits or a pit and another dog(s) as buddies since dogs tend to want to battle each other for some stupid reason now and then. Our mistake was we just never thought that "Whitey" had the pit mentality since she was so much dalmation. She had never instigated a fight here....although she had been bit once by another rescue. My wife indicates she is no longer going to rescue anything pit related due to the dangers involved in a multiple dog household but she wants to remain very active with the rescue group. They have a cool site where see volunteers called Pitbull Rescue Central

and here are listings of the dogs all around the country looking for homes

BEAST BOX 4 - THE PARTS HAVE BEEN ORDERED!
woooo hooooo! I love this crap. Well I thought hard and long on the P4 and it could be done but it would be a pile of work and cost 2-3X as much as this setup. I decided to venture into the world on the melting AMD chips just this one time. I always like to try everything once :) Next box will be the P4 and by then the parts will be available. Here is the shopping cart as I just ordered it tonight. I used 4 stores to make the purchase. I actually did not use MWAVE this time, as much as I tried to, just because they have a small motherboard selection and only had CPUs so I was able to find more parts together elseswhere.
from here I ordered

www.motherboardexpress.com
AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.3 266 bus $139
SuperMicro 1U case with swap IDE bays $320
Panasonic slim CD-ROM $75
Teac Black Floppy $24
Seagate 60gig $175

SuperMicro 1U case with 2 swap IDE bays $249

ASUS A7SVM-LM $91

www.crucial.com
(2) 512k sticks of ram at $57 each

www.sofistic.com
Thermaltake 1U rackmount cooler CPU fan $12

total right around $950

The reason I bought the case at aderdeenic and the cd and floppy at moboexpress is that I had ordered the model at motherboard express and Jim Grill wrote me "dude, that case is for scsi". I went "oh shit". he cases looked identical and one was a b at the end of the number which I guess is scsi so I called and cancelled the case there and ordered it where I first saw it. This was a little dumb since I know found the correct case over there as well but the phone guy told me they did not have it. Here they are

Not sure if it is a good case or not. I decided to go up one level this time...you can get a base model like my old boomrack for less than $200 now. I really like the idea of 2 drives since this helps with backup, repair, testing if a drive is bad and I like that I don't need to take the case apart to do this. If you want a great base case, this would of been my choice...300w power supply!

HEY! I am like an idiot...this also has removable drive bays too :) and it cheaper and has better power. $178
www.compute-aid.com/rack1u.html
No floppy though unless you rig it for the 5.25 slot and I though I found a bracket somewhere to do this. Ah yes, you could use the bracket here with that computer to get the floppy in
www.online-spectrum.com/accessories/cd_fd.htm
I see it says it is for dual CPU so maybe it is two 150w to make 300

I saw some really nice cases out there but could not bring myself to spend $500 on one right now. Here is a slick scsi case

ASUS CUA VS ASUS CUSL-M by Jim
Jim writes:
We have had bad luck with the CUSL2-M with slackware because the 815e chipset from Intel. It seems there are a few devices that remain a mystery that seem to be proprietary to Intel that just don't jive with Linux. We have three of them running right now and plan to phase them out as soon as possible. They are slow compared to the CUA, which uses the Ali Aladdin TNT2 chipset. It's like night and day even with simple things like compiling new kernels. The CUA is the one we have had up for as long as 187 days with no problems. I couldn't tell you exactly what the problem is; only that it exists and I would not recommend the CUSL2 or CUSL2-M (same except mini ATX format) for Linux.

HARDWARE UPGRADE HOOTENANNY
I got too excited looking at all those computer parts for a new box. The addiction was rekindled and I was ready to check into Betty Ford. I could not hold back...it was time to upgrade my 5 or 6 servers. I took an inventory to start

IP NAME MOBO BIOS BIOS NEW CPU RAM
.101 mister twister P3BF 1003.a 1006 celery 366 786k
.108 spitfire CUA 1002 1007 PIII 666 262k
.102 taunt top P2B-D 1011 1013 PIII 1000s 1000k
.107 taunt bottom P2B-D 1010 1013 PIII 450s 1000k
.110 andy P2B-LS 1012 1012 PII 400 384k
.109 sanya ? dr730 PIII 450 756k

The wife generally won't let me touch here computer as she claims "you touch too many buttons" so I only had to worry about the top 5 boxes. The goal was to make each box 1000mhz and a gig of ram. I was going to go for celerons but worried about all the voltage stuff I had read so I went with PIII 1000s with 100 front side bus...rare as hen's teeth...had to really search the web to find them. See that old PII...that was the classic first BEAST BOX 1 built by me and Gus the Programmer back in the early SexSwap days. You can find babble about it in the old old issues

trix.sexswap.com/SWAP42.HTM

I use that as my daily driver and it is getting a little long in the tooth for gaming. It was cutting edge and $5k in July of 1998! I decided to treat myself to a $95 video card...wait til you see this bad boy.

TOTAL UPGRADE COSTS with tax and shipping and reseller chicanery
$1500
not too bad :) - $300 a box.
I think it will be coin well spent. Craig is hammering the servers with 600+ spidering a massive mysql database and the boxes do matter in terms of how many spiders were can release and how fast we can fuss with the mysql tables. Jim Grill and I talked a lot about motherboards this week. If you want a great mobo that is not pricey, get a ASUS CUA (video and sound on board). This is a sweet board that boots like lightening and kernel compiles like lightening. You can use a PIII 933 on it...I am going to push it and attempt a 1000 with 133 bus...will let you know how it goes. The CUA is a perfect 1U board.

I did a lot of shopping in new sites. Here is one I like a lot

I found this great free piece of software you might try to look at all the harware on you computer AND it also does some testing! You can do performance tests and find everything in you box. A great piece of code.

Couture will win. Randy the natural Couture is an olympic class wrestler and has gone as an alternate to the last 4...yes (16 years) olympics. He is smart as a whip and thinks on his feet. He will want to get in and clinch. Pedro the Rock has lost 3 tough decision...but hey...he let it go to the decision...knock you opponent out and there is no decision. I think Pedro is damn tough and top15...but one level under couture. This is a great headliner.
RODRIGUEZ WILLIAMS

Ricco Suave Rodriguez...girls, this guy is a hunk a hunk a hunka burning love. He is this monster sized pretty boy with knees of steel. Pete Williams, rumored to be on roids, has his hands full and I think Ricco takes the bacon.
BARNETT HOFFMAN

If there is one fight I am dying to see, it is this one. Josh, the Baby Faced assasin with all his baby fat against Bobby, ex NFL football player Hoffman. I used to give Hoffman no respect, yet he is the real deal and is very tough. I think Barnett is a student of the game and will easily take Hoffman with his mind.

It has been a busy week of recovering and ordering computer junk. I hope to have lots of pics and box building for next weeks letter. I told Wes the ISP that I was using an AMD chip in a 1U server and his quote was "I wouldn't use an AMD chip in a window 98 box" :) hee hee haaa. I would have to agree that I have read nothing but heat horror stories on the AMD side of the fence but have some Guru-O-Gif heat tricks up my sleeve. Hey, check out this site...I ordered last night at 1am...got a letter this AM saying shipping in one hour...now that is SERVICE..these lads are the KINGS of all things CPU FAN

slick but won't fit in a 1U. The trick with the 1U is the size makes it always tough to cool a chip.

thanks again for the supportive emails. I miss my dogs but am better understanding and dealing with it. My operation pain is almost gone...only hurts when I laugh :)
