Holy man. I have been on my death bed this entire week since I last wrote you.
This honestly has been the worst week of my life. If I had a time machine, I
would remove it from my hostory. It has been a week of both physical pain and
mental sadness. I am feeling a little better today so I hope to put the
finishing touches to this weeks newsletter and send it out. If you are
interested in why this week has been so bad, I explain all of it in the last
GURU OF GIF section where it is more appropriate for off topic belly aching
and banter. This weeks letter will be a little thinner than normal, basically
because I have been lying in bed almost every day since last wednesday. Most
days I just couldn't sit at the computer....and it takes Hell or High Water to
keep me from my 12-14 hour daily computer fix.

This week the trix section has a lot of trix but they are all on scripts for
one certain problem. This may bore some of your to tears, but may put a skip
in your step for others :) One problem I have on my linux/unix server, is that
I run certain programs that never shut down. They run 24/7 for 365 days a
year. An example of this is my Half-life game server. I find code like this is
always a little unstable. Sometimes it might go 1 month without a lockup...and
othertimes it might go 24 hours...rather annoying. When I went to canada this
summer, it froze first day and players could not find my server for 7 days.
This kills popularity. Maybe you run a listserv, or an email program, or a
search engine cgi spam script, or a usenet script....if you have ever wanted a
solution to keep an eye on it and keep it running, well check out this weeks
trix where we analyze how to monitor and keep a process running. Even I was
able to piece together a little fun solution :) I did cheat a little this week
and I posted solutions people sent to me on a newsgroups post...this is
probably a violation of copyright law but since I asked the question...I
figured no one would be offended by me sharing their answers here as well as
on usenet. My favorite solution is the one by Deon. It is neat and complete.
He uses a ps ax with a -c to count the process...so elegant. I did the same
thing but in a butcher sort of way. I also have questions for you programmers
for next week...Leo wrote about inti and initabs with theory...I would love to
hear more on this and will ask in OF GIF section at bottom.

WAR MONTH 2
I am not scared of Osama, and I am not really scared of Anthrax. OK, I am a
little scared of small pox. What I am really scared of, is the government
trashing our modern civil liberties that have taken hundreds, if not thousands
of years. This is why I am a card carrying member of the ACLU. I think most
people in porn tend to have a civil liberty slant since we want freedom. Check
out this article...this has offended me far more than any other I have read

FBI CONSIDERS TORTURE
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,2001350021-2001364909,00.html

So now, it is ok to kill people, it is ok to profile people, and it is ok to
TORTURE people? Where does this end? I was to see the bad guy caught. I don't
want to see innocent people killed and I don't want to see people
tortured...especially ones that have not been tried in a court of law. I don't
even want to see bad guys tortured. I know the article talks about truth
serum....but hell, that's one step closer to a red hot poker and a dentist
drill. This is not the spanish inquisition.

I am also scared of how irrational we become in times of fear. Air Port
security is insane right now. And I serious doubt these measures would prevent
an attack of 5 unarmed men who use a good old nuckle sandwich to take over the
cabin. Remember the first World Trade Center attack...it was a Van....our
governement didn't go crazy and have everyone who drives a car go through a
zillion new checks. For some reason, people fear dying in the air 1000X more
than dying on the ground when death is just death. When there is a will there
is a way and when the person is willing to die, it is very difficult to
prevent them from doing what they are attempting. Have any comments you want
to share with readers (agree or disagree) email me andy@lips.com

GLOBAL HOLIDAY SALES TO ROP 25 BILLION from Richard
What have I been saying for the last month....expect a HUGE online holiday

cannot stop the power of the internet. It is massive. I buy nothing at reatil

COMMENTS ON FREE PICS AND TGP2S from Paul
Any way I wanted to comment on Ricks comments about the free porn sites. I own
a couple of tgps and have recently setup a tgp2 at
www.sexxi.com/tgp.html It's slow going but I think it's the way to go
when it comes to tgp or free sites. The less free porn the surfer gets the
better your chances of getting him to take out his visa. Like everything else
though there will always be some other guy offering more free porn than the
tgp2's to attract the traffic and screw it up. I think if we were able to get
it accross to all the free porn webmasters that less free stuff means more
signups in turn means more money.

YAHOO DROPS WEBRINGS from Kevin and PoshSpice
Kevin writes:
Thought your readers would be interested in learning yet one more snafu that
Yahoo! has run into. Yahoo! has been running the webrings for I believe like
6 months. (It was shortly after they took over the e-groups) I guess they
finally figured you can't make any coin running webrings, duh! At any rate,
the webrings will now be run by a new entity (see below) I wonder how long it
will take for the E-Groups to be taken over by someone else? Not long, I'm
sure. Hide & Watch :)

LINUX PROCESS WATCHER AND RESTARTER from Craig
I wrote Craig the programmer to get a snippet of code to restart a process
that blows up...for my game server when I am not watching it and it goes down.

Guru-O-Gif writes:
I am trying to invent a shell script but am lost. I run my half-life server
but it always bombs and then people think I haev closed shop since it is down
12 hours

1. I run thi ./hlds_run
2. could I now run a cron to look for that process? The process ID would
always chang...but in top you can see that file running.

I thought of comparing a foo top file with adefault one
foo default
./hlds_run

foo from chrom
./hlds_run

this would mean it is up and running, do not restart...but how do I create
that file #2
top | grep hlds > foo ???
this does not seem to work. and how do I say in shell if files match, do this,
if they dont do that. let me know...this does not seem like it would be over 5
lines if I knew what I was doing and would be very helpful for managing a
flakey server

Craig the Programmer writes:
# replace this line with what you want to search for in the process list
program="hlds_run"

# replace this line with whatever command you want to execute if process isn't
up
command="./hlds_run"

pidno=$(ps |grep $program |grep -v grep|sed 's/[^0-9]*\([0-9]*\).*/\1/')

if [ -z "$pidno" ]
then
echo "No such process running"
$($command) &
exit $E_NOSUCHPROCESS
else
echo "Process is currently running at PID $pidno"
fi

Basically I made this easy for you to change to use for any processes you want
to keep track of. It's pretty simple First it does a grep looking for your
program name (in this case hlds_run) The second grep filters out any process
in the results with grep in it....since the search itself creates a process we
wanted to weed that out so the only processes remaining were genuine. The sed
pulls the PID number out of the process still remaining in the
search...although not really necessary for your purposes I thought it might
come in handy if you wanted ever to have an auto-restart feature...like say
the script is setup every 7 days to refresh the HL server so it grabs the PID,
kills it and then restarts it again. It takes only about a second to execute
and should be usable with any bash-usable system. In case it doesn't work you
may want to make sure you're using at least version 2.04.21 (which you should
be, my version is pretty old hehe)

Guru-O-Gif writes:
Does this tell me the process is not running or does it restart the process?
Where is the 7 day part...I don't see that...would I chron this to the time I
want...say 5 minutes?

Craig the Programmer writes:
It does both....it echos that the process isn't running so if you have it as a
root cron it should appear in the logs. Also if it doesn't find a process for
the program it will execute the command variable (aka start up whatever
process was supposed to be running) The 7 day thing actually isn't in the
script....it was just an additional feature I was thinking of a bit and added
the PID into the coding so then if you ever did want a restart feature in the
script it would only take a few seconds to implement. Yes, you can cron the
script to whatever interval you wish...since it runs very quickly you could do
it as often as every minute but I think 5 minutes would be sufficient for what
you need.

LINUX PROCESS WATCHER AND RESTARTER posted by Leo
Leo posts
I also posted this to the newsgroups and got an interesting response from Lew
Lew writes:
If you are root on the Linux box, you could set up an inittab entry to restart
the server. The 'respawn' action of the inittab entry will watch for the
termination of the process, and restart it when it terminates. The terminal
'getty' processes use this to ensure that the logon prompt is available after
the user logs out.

'man 8 init' for an explanation of how init manages processes
'man 5 inittab' for details on the format of an inittab entry

can anyone further explain with an example of what Lew is saying? It seems
pretty slick. email me andy@lips.com

LINUX PROCESS WATCHER AND RESTARTER posted by Nollaig
Nollaig emailed me a terrific solution that he uses to keep his email listserv
running.

Nollaig writes:
I use this to make sure listserv keeps running:

if [ -z "`ps --no-headers -l -C lsv`" ]; then
cd /home/listserv
./go bg
fi

Modify what's after the "-C" and between "if" & "fi",
and you should have what you want.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

LINUX PROCESS WATCHER AND RESTARTER posted by Robert
Robert posts:
Instead of "top" use "ps ax". Use the return value of grep to determine
whether the executable is running or not. The heart will be
"ps ax | grep hlds | grep -v grep", and you'll test it for the return value
of the second "grep" (which keeps you from a false positive when the first
grep finds "grep hlds" in the output of "ps ax"). If it's there you're
okay; if it isn't you'll have to rerun the server script.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

LINUX PROCESS WATCHER AND RESTARTER from Guru-Of-Gif
Well I decided to try my hand at making my own by piecing these jems together.

if (ps ax | grep hlds | grep -v grep > 0) then
clock >> foo.checklog
else
cd /hl
./dm
fi

top line, if it matches the search, returns a value > 0 so I write to a
log..then if it gets nothing...nothing is 0 and does a restart.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

MODIFIED PRO-LEVEL LINUX PROCES WATCHER AND RESTARTER by Craig the Programmer
I showed Craig my version and he added some comments.
Craig writes:
Have you actually tried this? I think it would work but may need a little
modification
try

check = $(ps ax | grep hlds | grep -v grep)

if ($check > 0) then
clock >> foo.checklog
else
cd /hl
./dm
fi

The reason for the change is I think with your if statement the command may
pipe grep -v grep > 0 instead of actually comparing the string correctly.
You also need a $ before the bracket to signify it is a command to be
executed.

> a cron. SO...if a cron restarts this...do I lose the ability to see that
> screen in x windows?

see what screen? You totally lose me =) If you mean the top screen, no
there will be no hinderance of you being able to monitor top....if you mean
some HL screen that pops in x windows when the server is started....I'm not
sure....if I had to warrant a guess I would say yes since the process
running the cron is not in xwindows and the server wouldn't just create a
window being run by another user. But you could always try it and see what
happens.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

PRO-LEVEL LINUX PROCES WATCHER AND RESTARTER posted by Deon
Deon wrote
If you're not root, or if you don't want to run the daemon all the time,
then you can do something like what you proposed. Don't use top, though.
top doesn't terminate until you press 'q'-- it isn't meant to be run from
a script like you mentioned. Use the 'ps' command instead. Try something
like this...

------------BEGINNING OF SCRIPT-------------------------
#!/bin/bash

numprocs=`ps ax | grep -c hlds_run`
# note that those are backquotes in the above line
# it's the character under the tilde on some keyboards

if [ $numprocs -eq 0 ]; then
# put the command to start your server here...
fi
----------------END OF SCRIPT---------------------------

You'll have to put this in a cron job to run however often
you want to verify that the server is running. Oh and notice
the spaces on the inside of the '[ ]' characters in the if
statement....those are required.

TRICK CHAIRS FOR 12 HOUR BUTTS from Jim
Jim writes:
Remember a few issues back (SexSwap 6.14.2001 no.196) Ryan had discovered a
really cutting edge chair and keyboard layout that was all ergonomic and
stuff? Well, I have developed some pretty nasty back and neck problems in the
past 6 months since I quit my day job to do my Internet businesses full-time.
As I'm sure we (swappers) can all relate, if you are going to stay competitive
on the 'Net you have to put in some hours. And if you plan to learn any new
tricks, programming languages, or cool OS's you will have to work even more
hours. All this geeky stuff can lead to some seriously long 12-16 (or more)
hour days spent sitting on your ass looking straight ahead with your hands and
arms hanging over an array of various input devices.

I know the answer to this problem lies somewhere between exercise and taking
breaks and sitting less and eating right and running marathons with your
basketball buddies, etc. but that's just not a reality for me at this point in
time. A cool chair is probably not going to solve this issue completely but it
sure can help out from what I've been reading. I'm looking for a nice, ergo
design chair that's made by doctors or specialists or maybe even NASA *grin*
and I'm hoping you or some of the swap members can recommend an affordable
solution based on experience. Maybe even other stuff like ergo keyboards and
foot rests would be helpful too. I'm on my third chair now and for what I've
already spent I could have bought the human form or a Herman miller and the
split keyboards from kinesis-ergo, but before I do that I want to see what
hidden treasures can be found by asking a few people in the biz first.

www.kinesis-ergo.com
www.humanscale.com
www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/product/0,1469,c225-pss7-p8,00.html

I've bought a few from Office Depot and the one I liked the most just started
to smell a little funny. It was like a fake leather and was just too hot.
That's what I liked about the herman miller design... the air flow seems like
it could help keep the moisture down. Leather (real or fake) chairs are
sometimes the most comfortable but the moisture build up is a killer (yuck!).
Have you noticed that Office Depot some of the more expensive chairs actually
have a time recommendation on them? Some say that they are safe for up to 4
hours and other say 4-6 hours. I have yet to see one that says 12-16 hehe.
OMG! Remember my joke about chairs designed by doctors or NASA?

WORST WEEK OF MY LIFE by Guru-O-Gif
SURGERY COMPLICATIONS
I have had occasional blood in my urine for 3 years and since I had cancer the
docs are extra caustious and have given me every test in the book except
one...and that is a cystoscopy
www.niddk.nih.gov/health/kidney/pubs/cystoscopy/cystoscopy.htm
except this time they knock you out with gas to go up farther to the kidneys.
Here is a simpler picture of where they were and what happened. You can see
the bladder at the bottom, then the two tubes are ureters which go up to the
kidney
www.mens-care.org/urosystem/urinarysys/ureters.asp
the plan is that they put you to sleep and then insert a camera in your penis
(which they can do without freezing but can't get as far), and they go up your
bladder, into your ureter, and up to the kidney. Since I had cancer, they are
in search of tumors. Well on this surgery, the doc hit a snag in the unreter
about half way. There was a restriction or ring of tissue. He uses the
smallest camera, with is a 7.5mm made in France. It would not go through. He
decided this was a dangerous situation so he wanted to expand the ring. He
wanted to dialate it using a balloon, just like what they do with heart
patients whose arteries are too narrow. Doc Wang inserted the balloon and
started to expand it. The ring or restriction was so tight that the balloon
eventually burst and teared my ureter. I am sure the exploding balloon caused
trama to all surrounding areas as well. When I awoke, I felt as though I had
been shot by a .44 magnum in the left side of my gut. 5 days later it still
hurts like a mother. The first night they gave me more pain killers than they
could believe. They ask you "what pain level you are feeling from 1-10?" I was
screaming 10 10 10 10. They then load you up on Demerol
micro.magnet.fsu.edu/pharmaceuticals/pages/demerol.html
and Vicoden.
www.painmanagementsolutions.com/products/vicodin/vicodin.html
I hardly slept the first two nights since it is impossible to get comfortable
with the back and gut pain. Finally on Saturday, things started to improve.
Then, out of the fry pan and into the fire. My pain went away but my stomach
began to grow and grow with air. I had this huge belly full of air and I
hadn't gone to the bathroom in a week! Now of course you have to call the
doctor but you never get him...so you get the secretary or nurse...and then
she says "ok, I'll write a note for the doctor, tell me what you have?". And
she is always this cute babe who you try to act cool near when you are at the
office...so you have to tell her the most embarassing facts on earth...I say
"like I need to take a plop and haven't gone in 6 days and I don't seem to be
able to fart"...hee hee haaa. OK, I try to use proper medical terms but it
still is damn embarassing. Eventually I found the doctors fax number and
started using it to convey info rather than playing the embarassing "talk to
the secretary" game :) This air stomach was making me sicker than ever since
it created nausea. The doc recommended a laxative and I was happy to be able
to let some farts again :) How sick is this stuff eh? The next day I was back
in pain but slowly on the road to recovery. I expect it will be another 5-7
days before I am back to normal...all because of a needless operation I did
not want in the first place but went along to calm my folks and the doctors
down. And now for the worst news
MY DOG IS KILLED
On the worst pain day of my life, my wife and I return home to our house and I
run to the bedroom since I am going to toss my cookies after the ride home
from surgery...and do, and want to get right into bed. I eventually come out
of the bedroom after an hour or so and find my wife balling her eyes out and
cleaning. My wife and I have no children. We have 4-6 dogs at anytime and we
just love dogs. My wife rescues dogs as her hobby. Here is her site
www.hugadog.com
She loves pitbulls which are nicer dogs than the media makes them out to be
but they still can be dangerous and have special issues. Last week we had 6
dogs at home. 4 of our dogs...Pepper, Ren, Marley and Whitey, and 2 dogs that
are rescues trying to find homes..Diva and Candy which are Pitbulls. Here is
Sanya with Candy and Diva
www.hugadog.com/contact.html
My wife usually locks a few dogs in cages before she leaves teh house but did
not on this day. When we returned home, she found a blood bath and two of our
dogs had killed my favorite dog "Ren". Ren has been with us for 8 years and
was the first dog we ever owned. He was the king of the pack and they all
respected him as the boss. He never bugged the rest of the pack and was a real
loner and I really loved him. Pepper and Whitey were covered with blood. They
had attacked him. Pepper is a beagel mix and whitey is a dalmation pitbull
mix. Whitey was the happiest dog on earth and never attacked any of our other
dogs. Pepper had been in a few scraps around home but never hurt any of the
other dogs like this.
www.hugadog.com/Pictures/pepwhitey.jpg
We are not sure what happened. My best guess is that they UPS man showed up
with a box which excites them all and Ren ran and jumped on the window...they
must of got extra excited and perhaps Pepper and him growled at each other and
then Whitey grabbed him by the throat. We have seen dogs attack another when
they see one try it...wierd primitive pack mentality. Ren was a soft coated
wheaten terrior. Here is his picture
www.hugadog.com/memorial.html
My wife decided to euthanize Whitey when she took Ren's body to the pound. I
loved Whitey as well. She was the goofiest dog you have ever seen. She only
had one eye and no one would adopt her since she looked funny. I called her
"one eyed Jack". I used to say she had doggie ADD (attention deficit disorder)
since she could not sit still and was too happy and goofy. I do not know what
is right or wrong anymore. I only wish they were smarter than dogs and had not
done this horriific act which is natural for them. Perhaps Whitey should not
have been put to sleep but I cannot risk my other dogs lives. Perhaps Pepper
should of also been euthanized, but I don't think he would of killed Ren on
his own since they had squabbles in the past. I miss both my dogs and this
was far more worse mental pain than my physical surgery pain. This really was
the worst week of my life.

jeez, it is tough to act cheery after those downer stories. Sorry about
telling you all those things but it is therapeutic in letting me share. Here
is some fun stuff

WIN ANOTHER COBRA DRAW
Ready to win another cobra? There are maybe 20 cobra manufacturers and the
cream of the crop one is SuperFormance. This is not even a kit...they factory
build these and the fit and finish is second to none. Most buyers spend $40k -
$90k on their Superformance cars. Well SPF has offered one car for a raffle to
aid in the September Fund Efforts. This raffle is not free but $50 a ticket.
The good news is that it is a lot easier to win that a free drawing. I bought
a ticket 3 days ago and so far there were only 120 people in. The draw is in
december. What is extra nice about this site is that it is all PAYPAL ...wooo
hoooo! And it took me maybe 2 clicks total to buy...cool!
www.superformance.com/raffle_page.asp

Now I have also heard that one more of the creamy cobra makers may put a car
for auction or draw. Kirkham makes a very rare aluminum body cobra! When I
find out more on that draw I will pass it along.
