This is a HELLA MONSTER SIZED edition of SexSwap news :) I am sending it out a night early since it is massive and once again I am trying to get a little ahead with the chores this week since the folks are visitng. Thank you to everyone who wrote me this week with great stories, tips, tricks, opinions and info since it has been bundled into a rare WAR and PEACE version of the news. You may need a pot of coffee or a pitcher of martini's to get through this thick and chunky banter fest. Where to begin. More pre amble. I am on the war path this week as I hurl swear words, curses, and pure belly aches at Exodus, the Radical Right, and an Editor or two at Ziff Davis Smart Business :) Lots of ranting and raving in this weeks stories.There is of course more news on the WTC attacks week four. FTC TAMING THE NEW WILD WEST
here are two stories I need you to check out before I head into soapbox banter more. The first story is on mis-typed domains and the second is on RJB telecom settling with the fed. Both stories have LARGE ramifications in the adult internet space. Thank you to everyone who mailied these in this week since I received them from several people.

OK, there are at least 5 issues here

MIS-SPELLED DOMAINS
the FTC shut down over 5500 names owned by Zuccarini and others. I tend not to agree with the FTC on this. What's a good analogy? How about...Walmart opens a store and then closes and moves and I rent their old building to sell videos. I get traffic from old confused Walmart shoppers coming to the old location. This happens all the time in real estate. I can see the FTCs point, but I think they did it because most mis spelled domains are owned by porn or casinos...I bet they would not of done it if they were directed to basketball sites..know what I mean. Anyways, this is a dangerous precident for all mis spelled domain owners as they may lose these names shortly.

MOUSE TRAPPING
one of the reasons they shut all the sites down was mouse trapping. Again, I think they should of made mouse trapping illegal rather than shut down the domains. Anyways, I agree with their stance on this. You know what I mean...a zillion consoles open endlessly and never end and I can't X out of them. This is annoying beyond belief and I don't think many people are sympathetic to sites that use this java maze of terror.

SEARCH ENGINE FALSE DOORS
there are a few folks that spam engines with the word "tennis" and redirect people to porn. Again, I side with the FTC on this and sites will pay for such misconduct since it is not allowed in other forms of advertising. What is not clear...will real doors be next? I would have to think that they may be a target in the future. The engines already try to filter for them. Time will tell

PAYSITE REBILLING
Here is the big one folks...wake up...this is the juicey story. RJB agreed to email customers after the short trial period and ask "do you wish to continue" and the customer must respond before he is rebilled. This is huge. This alone will suck 40% of the profits from porn. I kid you not! More on this in a minute.

Back to PAYSITE REBILLING and FTC. I have said this before and I will say it again...paysites in porn make their money off sneaking sign up tricks and customer laziness. If you do not believe that, then you should have no worries over the precident set by RJB in their settlement with the FTC. I have worries since I have seen the numbers on too many paysites to believe it is any other way. I know you want to tell me "Andy, it is content that determines how long a customer stays on my site" and to that I say "bullshit". Take all this wth a bag of salt. Here is my rational again on why I believe this. When I used to own paysites, me and a few friends were at that 3rd party billing company...what was their name...DMR ? Yes, DMR or www800.com. Me and the lads would show each other our stats. I saw stats for $20,000 a year paysites, $100,000 a year paysites, and $25,000,000 a year paysites. I developed a formula to determine the average length of stay of a customer. The formula is simple and is (REPEATS / JOINS) - 1 = average stays. If on an average day for a paysite, you have 900 rebills, and 300 new joins, your average customer stay is (1200 / 300) - 1 = 3 months. This assumes several things. First, the formula is most accurate if the site is table...not growing or shrinking. The greater the growth or shirnk rate, the more inaccurate. The site must also have a small trial period like 3 day free or 5 day trial for $5....if the site only has monthly signups (no short teaser stay), then change the formula to just REPEATS / JOINS.. The reason I wanted to go through that is because...what we found out was, the average stay of a customer at a $20k a year site, $100k a year site and $25M a year site were DAMN CLOSE! It did not vary more than .5 to 1 month and more often than not, was the same. We were all shocked when we thought our customers were staying 9 months when they were really staying 2 - 4 months. But forget that for a moment....since the average stay was very similar at all the sites...this meant that CONTENT meant very little since the $25M a year sites and content up the Yin Yang and the $25k site was smaller and on a budget. The only conclusion I draw from this is that the customer's stay is based on his laziness to quit. I personally believe that if a customer is asked in am email if he WISHES to stay, the majority will say no earlier and more often. I believe the average stay will be cut in half from what it is today. This will cut profits at least in half. This will REALLY shake out the industry. More proof I have on this is that when porn first started..several people ran site the old way where you had to signup each month and respond....I remember when Awesome Adam was stil running a site the old way and then went to recurring billing, his sales figures double or tripled....again, more proof that paysites make money on recurring billing customer laziness, rather than on customer satisfaction geared to content. On a side note....one thing I did find when I posted some of the paysite math ideas to member of the old YNOT was that 80% of sites matched my criteria...but the amateur girl sites where the girl was the star and was real and had a following....those sites had MUCH higher average stays than the classic cooky cutter paysite. I think those styles sites are almost like a moviestar fan site and developed a community of followers that paid to belong.

therefore, if the FTC uses the RJB settlement as a precident for future porn billing practices, this will drastically affect the current level of profits in porn sites and there will be a large ripple effect in the industry.

Why did I show you that press release? You know why :) because we are going to hammer them into the ground for having a staff of 4,500 employees! What the FUCK do four thousand, and five hundred people do all day at a hosting company? Danye and Gary host something like 5,000 bandwidth sucking porn sites and there are two of them. The Baron Of Bandwidth and the Nebulous Of Networking told me once that they are something like 1% of the total traffic of the HUGE backbone Mae East. How is it that Dayne and Gary can can handle a zillioon bandwidth sucking boxes, yet exodus burns through $600 million in 3 months?

I got carried away...back to the math...this is me just estimating and guessing...take it with a bag of salt...I am pulling these numbers out of my ass

We slowed it to a crawl. Wendy Taylor is editor of Ziff Davis Smart Business, If I were Ziff Davis, I would fire her today since she knows Jack Shit about online banenr ads and is not very smart about business. First, online ads were HUGE 2 years ago. Why? The reason is, because they were used to fleece the stock market. There were tons of sites buying and selling ads to one another at rrediculously high rates like $40cpm and great. Why? Because they were fudging the books for accountants to make them look good and make the stock shoot up. The other reason ads were so high was that there were tons of companies worth a billion bucks with people who knew nothing about anything and they were buying these over priced ads. These two conditions pushed ad rates far out of line with reality. Yes ad rates have fallen....back to reality. There is nothing wrong with this...it makes good economic sense. Next, I am so very tired when people write "online ads don't work". You do not have to be a genious to go into the world of porn and see that there are 100,000 porn sites....why? because somebody is actually making some money and guess what...those zillion porn sites all HAMMER surfers with banners ads. Why? Because they WORK! One of the reason that people think online ads don't work is because online ads are a rare form of advertising that is accurately trackable. Online ads are a marketers dream. David Ogilvy would pee his panties to see the power of tracking in online ads. We have instant information. When I used to test banners on sexswap, I knew within 60 seconds, how a banner was going to do because of the testing. This same test would take a month in print, and three month in TV. This is awesome advertising testing power. So I think people don't like the truth on how often people act when shown any type of ads. Direct mailings are lucky to get a 1% response rate...that seems totally inline with online. TV never gets a 1%.

Here is the thing that is so hard to show people about advertising...I am shocked that Wendy Taylor and her partner in crime "Marty Jerome", do not get this simple concept. If I can buy an ad for X and my net revenue because of the ad is >X, then I should buy that ad. If someone came to me and said "I can stamp lips.com on toothpicks and we will give them out at cocktail bars and you will get traffic", I would consider it. Why? The question is not whether or not it is a good idea...the question is "What response rate will I get and will the cost of the toothpick stamping ads be less than what I make." Any ad is a good ad to buy if you can make money on it. Are all $40cpm banner ads bad? No, not is I make $41cpm on them...but I doubt anyone could even sell crack cocaine and make the math work on that.

the click rate is good as long as I make money. Is a 5% rate better than a 1%? if we hold all variables the same...then yes....but if the 5% banner cost me 100X more...then it is not as good as the 1%. If I had banners that had a 0.0000000000001 click rate, yet I showed 300 trillion ads a day, and made money, do I care? No. My goal is to make money.

MAINSTREAM WRITERS ARE STILL CLUELESS

just thought I'd reply real quick on adulthitkit. I bought AHK and it works really nice as far as speed & ease of submitting, but it has it's faults.

Fault#1 is it will only output text link recips. This is bad because it's easy for a tgp owner to tell that they used AHK because the same 4 recips are at the top of everybody's page. TGP owners are anal about auto-submitting for some reason.

Fault#2 is the list of tgps is not up to date. I've owned 3 tgps over the years and they're all in the list of submitted sites. ...good for me, because I get all those text links on peoples pages. Bad for submitters, because I havent taken submissions in about a year!

Fault#3 is the price... 70 bones a month... Yikes!
And as far as it getting you 125k/day... yes, it can do that even with its faults. But in the TGP world... that ain't squat. Anyone that designs a decent gallery and submits to maybe 20 tgp's the old fashioned way can get double those hits. If they updated it to use reciprocal buttons and have it output random recips each time, it would kick ass.

Well I would say now that there are two types of free sites where before there was only one. I was a big believer and promoter of free sites early on because they are much less work and less trouble than a pay site. They generally do not make as much gross, but they used to make good net incomes and were simple. For example...in the old days a free site might be a single picture "babe of the day" and 3-15 banners. Or a free site might be 5 thumbnails, some BS chit chat and lots of banners. The point was to direct traffic to it to make money on the banners. These sites do not work as well today. A second free site has emerged...it is sort of like a poser pay site. These site let you in free and there may be pic libraries and video libraries...but they are always on the upsell...they try to use a lot of free content and then make money on upselling premium pics or vids or crud or data collection etc. I don't really know of any of these off hand but remember they were big a year ago or so.

hmmm. there may be some but you will always run into filtering no matter what. Remember a year or two back they came out with blind programs...that is what would work for you. The best thing is always to test. I have never found that blind worked very well since it is so heavily filtered. Pay per click always sounds great but I personally always found in testing that pay per signup worked better for me AND then you can link anyway you want since you are given code and only paid on sign up. I also believe this is most fair for both parties...so you are paid only if you make them money. but you will find that they all have to use some sort of filters to prevent fraud. The best thing is to sign up for a few programs and test. I don't know who is reliable. I get about 1 sign-up in 2000 to 3000 hits depending on how I send my type in traffic.

NEWBIE FILE NAMKING by Jim

I was just sitting here answering tech support emails when I thought I might share something with the swap members that seems to be a common problem with new webmasters. We all had to start green at some point. No one was just born a programmer knowing everything there is to know and it's hard for some of us to remember that sometimes. Most of what we learn comes from making mistakes or screwing something up and one of the biggest mistakes I see with newbie's is understanding Unix file names.

So here's a great tip for newbie's:
(The old timers will hate this!)

Try to stay away from unorthodox characters in file names.

The Unix operating system is not limited to any rules for file names except that they have to be less than 256 characters (could be different on some versions) but that same rule does not hold true for all the programs running on, or connecting to the machine. For instance our FTP will allow the following regular expression:

"^[a-zA-Z0-9,.'-_~%]*$"

which means that an uploaded file name must begin ( ^ ), contain ( [ ] ) up to several ( * ), and end ( $ ) with the characters inside the brackets ( [ ] ). Notice that there is not only "a-z" but also "A-Z". That is because Unix is CASE SENSITIVE. "File.gif" is not the same as "file.gif". Most people develop their web site on Windows and then wonder why half the images are broken after they upload. Some ftp clients will be able to upload file names containing any of these characters and many more but downloading or managing the files may not be possible if the remote machine handles the file name differently than the local machine. For instance, FAT32 and NTFS file names can have spaces and so can Unix however Unix will display them as "some/ file/ with/ spaces.gif" This will work just fine as long as you call that gif file by that name exactly when you need it. In the case of a file name such as "somefile(with$other)stuff.gif" Unix will require the use of a backslash "\" to escape certain characters that could have other meaning to the operating system. Unix will require that file to be called as "somefile\(with\$other\)stuff.gif". This is a perfect example of a case where windows will not have a problem displaying that exactly as you typed it because the windows shell, or file viewing/managing system is not a development bed. Unix shells are also programming environments and have to make decisions based on certain characters such as a "='/\()[], etc. so they will use a backslash to escape them. A good example: prompt$> echo "hello" will print hello on the screen but prompt$> echo "\"hello\"" will print "hello" with the quotes. All this can get pretty ugly when your calling gif files on your web page or linking to another page with a goofy name. There is no way that your FTP client would ever know to put the backslash in front of certain characters unless you told it to or someone had enough foresight to program that into it. Most FTP clients have a setting for host type and you might see something like Unix(standard) in there but that is no guarantee that every single Unix machine is the same and really it's up to the FTP server to display them to your FTP client properly also.

Since there are so many operating systems and so many sys admins who feel differently about illegal characters the safest bet is to basically stick to this regular expression:

"^[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9.-_]*[a-zA-Z0-9]$"

which means to start ( ^ ) with a [letter or number] followed by a [letter, number, dot, hyphen, or underscore] for any number of times (hence the *) and ending in only in a [letter or number] (hence the $). I can promise you a life of trouble free, cross platform file management if you stick to these rules. And remember to be case accurate. If you want FILE.GIF then remember to a put "img src=FILE.GIF" in your image tag or your site will be a broken mess in Unix. So why not just host on Windows machines? Well, if you need to ask that question you need more help than I can offer :-)
