It is America Under Attack Week 3 and already it feels like things are improving. Slowly people are returning to their daily routines. Even the stock market has had some better days this week. Once again there are lots of unique story links to the tragedy below. I 've heard some unusual stories from a couple of friends. Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world and right now it is getting kicked in the nuts. Richard told me he visited the very popular San Diego Wild animal park this week and was able to park in spot #10. The joint was deserted and they made everyone get searhed with a metal detector. Jorge, Steve, and Andy all were in Vegas last week and they tell me that they have NEVER seen Vegas so dead quiet. They said that the business buffests you could just walk right up to at ANY time of the day. The great fountain show at the Belagio was wide open when normally it is standing room only. Every hotel has their marquise sign saying "we have rooms". I hope this industry is able to bounce back since it effects so many people in so many ways. How about some fun news? Wooohoo! Jos wrote me how to block ICQ pagers this week and I have added his link below in trix. There are 3 basic ways. There is a remove list, and there is these goofy white pages, and then there is the hardcore BLOCK ALL. I used all three since I wanted ultrahardcore blockage! Let me give you the hardcore level three method...just llok down and your ICQ and look at the bottom left for the ICQ button that turns into a red cat or radish or something when you hover over it. Click it and then click SECURITY AND PRIVACY. Now click the IGNORE tab and the secrets of the world will be revealed to you! From here you can block all damn pagers and also email if you choose. Sweet. 70% of my ICQ traffic was spam pages...I have not had a signle one since I did these new trick settings. Thanks Jos!

I want to congradulate young Eric for donating his hair to Locks Of Love...nice job Eric! Now when we were on the playground, back in elementary school, what did you call a short hair cut? It seems they had many names and when I tell my wife what we used to call them, she thinks I am speaking french :) Back in Sudbury, it was a favorite tease to pelt verbal abuse at anyone who had received a trim. The biggest attack of all was the "you got a bean shave - you got a bean shave". And then you yell back "shut up, I did not get a bean shave...this is just a small trim!" and then Todd would point a finger "beany shave!". the other term that was popular was the "brush cut". I think it comes from that your hair is so short that it looks like a brush bristles :) Lately I have been experimenting with all the Wahl razor attachments...I have gone from a 4 to a 3 to a 2 and this week a #1 for fun...I think I am liking the #2 as the #1 give the "John Luke Pecard" look. This week I had a couple webmasters email me their sites and occasionlly I find a site that has the background image repeating. I think this happens when a webmaster designs a site in a monitor resolution lower than some surfers use. This is not a big problem and most of the time 95% of surfers will never even know it exists. There are a few ways to correct for it. I use a 21" monitor at 1600x1200 so I see this on quite a few websites. Here is an exaggerated example. The background image fills the screen and repeats when you only really want to see it once.

I first try to correct it by adding a 1 pixel bar to the top that is 2500 pixels wide...this would trick most monitors as long as the background gif is tall enough...mine is not

I then decided to try a super big gif that was 2500x2500...most of it white space and my machine almost blew up creating it :) What is interesting is that the gif is still only 21k large which is reasonable. This corrects the problem...I am not sure if the large gif would cause technical trouble...it seems to work fine here

Here is a solution using an invisible 4 cell table. It is interesting that on my screen there is a wierd grey line appearing...wait...that is the edge of the gif :) I need to make the cell 1 or two pixels smaller

Here are a couple things that new webmasters might want to consider. Now take all of this with a bag of salt as much of it is subjective. These rules apply to the sign industry and most of them also apply to the web.

full left to right margin text can be hard to read

one trick I like to do on all my sites is to build everything in a one cell table so I can make the width of the site 600 pixels or maybe 800 as monitor resolution continues to go up over time with surfers. I think you will find this easier to read or more user friendly

Something true in the sign industry is that people can read signs that are dark letter on light backgrounds at a greater distance that light letters on dark backgrounds. The same is true in print advertising as David Ogilvy tested this and had a 4X greater response rate with dark text on white background ads. On the web, I personally believe the same is true. However, I am not so sure since my example does not prove my point very well since the dark paragraph seems to me as easy to read as the others. You may want to test or decide for yourself. Notice there are no big 6 search engines using dark colors...many game sites do but are hard to read.

When I left spamming engines (just got too lazy), maybe three years ago, I had stopped using pre-canned engine software and had one custom written for $1500. I find you can get so many slick features for yourself if you have one built. I had one set up that would
1. submit to any engine
2. at any time of the day
3. from any list
4. any number of urls

and had a few other features I can't remember. This is old hack now but was pretty leading edge in 1996 and 1997. I could target engines very specifically and for any number of domains. It was all perl and unix based but not I would have it done in php and mysql. this takes time and energy and a programmer you trust...so if you are looking for simplicity, go with Adweb or submission wizard

Next, any one on the web making a website really should know some html or at least how to use FrontPage, GoLive or Dreamweaver. It is very difficult to run a site if you can not build it. Java you do not need to know to be successful since you can copy and paste it.

it is very dificult to do this today. The engines all run tougher and tougher filters. so you cannot submit endless doorways like you used to be able to since they will blackflag you. To get around this, some people buy 100s of domain names. I never tried that route but it did work for some folks. If I were you, I would start slow, try a simple program like submission wizard, and try to do a little mroe research on how many pages you can get away with to each engine each day. Maybe I can ask webmasters and see what their thoughts are on this.
