AMERICA UNDER ATTACK WEEK2
Is it just me or did anyone feel that last week just crawled. It was
like time stood still. The world is in a state of Limbo. This week has
started off better with the markets opening and Letterman doing his
show and TV slowly returning to normal. Most of us have been reading
news story after news story. There are several in this weeks letter...I
hope they are not too stale since some are 5 days old. Today the big
news is sort of cute. Remember last week the headlines were "TALIBAN
SAYS BIN LADEN DID NOT DO IT" and today the headlines are "TALIBAN
SAYS BIN LADEN MIGHT HAVE DONE IT - WHAT WILL YOU GIVE US". Hee
heee haa.
Mr. Taliban says:
OK, we are not saying that Osama Bin Laden did it or didn't do it. But
just hypothetically, let's say he did it. What will you give us if we
hand him over.
Uncle Sam says:
You will be rewarded.
hee hee haa. First, I am
enjoying the Taliban switcheroo. Being a crusty business lad that has
been taken to the cleaner on more than one occasion, I would send in
my legal negotiators
Taliban Negotiator:
We want $10 billion over 5 years, 3 tanks, and a $3 billion signing
bonus. And we want box seats at this year's superbowl
I can only hope they are
able to strike a deal. There is an article listed below that EQ sent
in. It has to be one of the longest articles I have ever read and takes
1-2 hours to finish. It describes the bleak plight of the people of
Afghanistan. They are the poorest people in the world and they are literally
starving to death. 40-100 die a day and a million could easily die this
year because of food. There are only 3 things you can do to make money
in Afghanistan. Grow poppies to make opium - Become a paid soldier in
a mercenary army - join the Taliban and study religion for a bowl of
soup a day. The conditions there are not much better than 1000 years
ago. in fact, one might argue conditions were better 1000 years ago.
It is common for a father to sell his 10 year old daughter to another
man. Women are pure posessions and treated very poorly. If you have
some time, it is certainly an elightening read. I sure hope we don't
kill any of these inocent people who are already close to death.

EXCELLENT NEWS SOURCE from

Richard sent me this link and I have been using it all week. the odd
thing is that today it is down! Maybe they are swamped or soemthing
else. The news on this site is 6-12 hours before ANY TV newscast gets
it. This is Pakistani and Indian News written in english and is very
fresh and way ahead of any US news site that I have found and you get
a better world perspective on the problem. Try the link a few times
this week since I have no idea why it is down...my guess is that people
have caught on to how good it is. The pics were all X's this weeks that
showed their servers were straining.

NEW DESIGN FOR GAMMA'S FREEHOST
"EROTISM.COM"
www.erotism.com
Michael, the webmaster in charge of EROTICM.COM, emailed me this week
to tell me about their new slick design. If you have been looking for
an honest free host that has bandwidth up the ying-yang and is not going
to disappear in the middle of the night, then check out the one created
and operated by Gamma. I just checked the stats and there are now over
11,000 free sites hosted. 26,000 are under constructon. Anyone signing
up gets
- 10 megs
- ftp access
- unlimited bandwidth
Out of curiousity, I decided
to sign up for a site. I was up and running in 2 minutes eactly. Here
is my blank site with no content :)
www.erotism.com/sixchicks/
I am amazed that you can use regular FTP now to access such sites. I
remember the days of AOL and building a site with their tools where
you would browse for a single file, click about 100 times and at 28k,
that single file would upload. It took like 3 years to build a one page
site. It is neat that the free sites now allow standad FTP access to
makes building sites much simpler. The upload tools seem easy to use
and powerful enough to make cool pages. Again, if you are looking for
a free adult hosting site, here is the one created by Gamma. It is pro-level,
fast, and easy to navigate.

CLICKMOJO from Brujah
www.clickmojo.com/
(GURU-O-GIF CALLS THIS THE BEST TRICK/SITE OF 2001)
I bet you are asking yoursefl "Andy, enough banter already, where
the heck is the fake meat and potatos this week!?" Hee hee haaa.
:) Well have I got a treat for you. Webmasters occasionally show me
some of their secret projects. A few of these are PRO-LEVEL ideas. Every
so often, the webmaster emails me back and says I can unzip my lip and
reveal their story. This week on ICQ, Brujah sent me such a message.
Brujah is a master pro-level domain name lad. I know 10-20 people who
are hardcore name harvesters. These guys do things I can't even comprehend.
Sure there are scriptsand sites that look for domains coming off hold.
Brujah's site is different for a couple reasons. First, he finds name
with a method I have never heard of. Secondly, he cross references the
names with a site that make the names worth more gold! OK, I am teasing
you tidbits...onto the fake meat.
Here is is what Brujah ICQd
me this week
Brujah writes:
You'll recognize the lists I showed you previously but in a different
layout. Feel free to show it to anyone if you want. I've decided not
to charge for it.
www.clickmojo.com/
I found this to be amazing.
I thought he would charge $45 a month for such a site! I once asked
him how he finds his names. Most amatuer level domain harvesters used
the WHOIS lists which are slow and over taxed. Brujah and an elite few
apply to Verisign aka Thawte to get the daily, downloadable bi-daily
list of top level domains.
www.verisign-grs.com/dns/dnspro.html
On the site it states that members may ftp the TLD Zone Files for the
.com, .net, and .org top-level domains. Each file contains the active
domain names in that particular top-level, and each is updated twice
daily. I believe the file is over 300mb! Now I am still a little foggy
of how this all works. I believe the top guys download this file into
a database. I am not sure what info is in the file but they are able
to tell earlier what names are going back into circulation. This method
somehow is faster than more common methods of finding names that are
going back into circulation from off hold. If it was easy, everyone
would do it. My head hurts just thinks trying to figure out how to do
it. There are some hurdles as you have to be accepted and apply just
to download this file and get access to it.
Now we have on-hold domain
reports faster than the average bear. Brujah takes it one step further
and this is why I really LOVE his site and this idea. He cross references
the names with Yahoo. Are you scratching your head and saying "So
What?" So what! Yahoo is next to impossible to submit an URL to
now. The wait is horrible and they want $300! Imagine that you could
register a domain name for $20 and it is ALREADY indexed in YAHOO! Plop
my Panties!!!!!!! I am a little worried since I think this feature is
way too sweet. I asked Brujah if he might even link his Yahoo list with
Yahoo and he said he thought about it but fears that they might get
wise and then use his site to start removing the domains. We will see
if that happns. I also asked him about the other big 6 engines like
google and open directory etc and he says he has already written the
beta code and just has to add it in. When he adds this feature....get
out of town! it will be SO KICK ASS! I cannot think of a more powerful
way to find domains....already finding them that are indexed...instant
traffic!.
The ClickMojo site also groups
names for easy searching in these groupings:
Yahoo - Domains with Yahoo listings
Yahoo 2 - Yahoo drop list #2
Adult - Adult related domain names
Adult 2 - 2nd Adult list, less filtered.
Mainstream - Top internet and business related domain names
Mainstream 2 - 2nd Mainstream list, less filtered.
Dictionary - Dictionary word domain names
3 char - 3 Character domain names.
I asked brujah if the site
is really up to date or poser fake up to date like many sites. He wrote
"its updated every day, sometimes several times per day.".
I checked and the names all
looked fresh in my tests. The domains seemed to be available. That is
one complaint I have on domainbot.com is that the names are all gone
when I search for them. The site seems to be all PHP and MYSQL which
is even tricker. I worry that this is such a good site that it won't
last long. Bruijah is already in negotiation with Dotster. If you want
to see a trick site...go to CLICKMOJO now! If you are a domain player,
this is a site you will want to bookmark. I can't wait til he adds the
other search engine lists.
Guru-O-Gif:
what are the differences between Yahoo list one and two
Brujah:
the difference in lists are different times of day or sources that I
process the lists. I'm still trying to make sure I provide only the
best lists. :)
Guru-O-Gif:
Will you be adding the other engines in the future
Brujah:
i'm already running lists for dmoz, google and hotbot. just haven't
decided how to display them yet if I do. I opened up a forum for discussion
under the CM_Forum link.

PRO-LEVEL WILDCARD DNS from Jim
Jim writes
Here is a sample DNS host record. We use bind 9. I think *most* people
use the latest release since there have always been exploits. It's just
a matter of time. For those who don't use 9 the biggest difference is
the presence of the "@" sign but anyone who has edited a DNS
record should be at home here.
$TTL 3600;
@ IN SOA somesite.net. hostmaster.someisp.com. (

NS ns2.someisp.com.
MX 10 mail.someisp.com.
localhost A 127.0.0.1
@ A 64.199.53.10
www CNAME somesite.net.
;ftp CNAME somesite.net.
* CNAME somesite.net.
I'm not going to get into what everything in the file is for because
it would take too long and I don't know everything anyway :-). So anyway
here we go...
The lines that have CNAME in them is where it all happens. First you
see www CNAME somesite.net. and that is where you get the www in your
domain from. Then you see ;ftp CNAME somesite.net. The semi colon in
front of ftp is to comment out that line so this host has no ftp. I'm
sure now you can guess what the * CNAME somesite.net is for eh? That's
it. You put the * for wild card. You could put whatever you want there
but the star will take care of all of it. For people who want to make
*.whatever.com go to a separate site you will need a separate host record
unless you plan to do name-based hosting in which case you just change
ServerName to whatever you want so...
<VirtualHost dumbnerds.com>
...crap...
ServerName www.dumbnerds.com
ServerAlias *.dumbnerds.com
...crap...
</VirtualHost>
would get requests for dumbnerds.com or whatever.dumbnerds.com and....
<VirtualHost dumbnerds.com>
...crap...
ServerName silly.dumbnerds.com
...crap...
</VirtualHost>
would get silly.dumbnerds.com with only one wildcarded host record.
There is obviously much much more to running named and apache but wildcarding
is easy and I can't think of a reason (other than the yahoo story from
last week) why any ISP would not add that line for you if you asked
nicely. We add that to all our host records only out of laziness because
I hate having to type www. before my domain names. Holy Shit! I just
thought of a very good amount of traffic that could potentially be lost
if you don't wildcard! If I'm so lazy then how many others might be
too lazy to type it all out? Here's the thing... I like IE because I
can type yahoo in the address window and then hit Ctrl+Enter and www.
and .com are automatically added making it www.yahoo.com in one
swift keystroke. How ever, if you have a .net or .org or something Mr.
Gates left you high and dry so my answer to that was that I could just
type myplace.net and hit enter and it's smart enough to add the
giving me myplace.com which works fine for wildcarded host records.
Check this out:
yahoo.com <--- this one is a redirect NOT a wildcard.
crap.yahoo.com <-- see what I mean?
mwave.com <-- missing out?
amazon.com <--- this one is a redirect NOT a wildcard.
barnsandnoble.com <--- wildcard or not?
crap.barnsandnoble.com <-- guess not.
goto.com <-- wildcard
crap.goto.com <-- smart wildcard. Look at how they handle
it! Very smart!
I'll be looking forward to hearing more on the yahoo.sex thing. It seems
that some of the Net's leaders either are not hip to it, don't care,
or know something we don't. I wonder if big time corporate lawyers advised
some of these Net giants not to mess around with wildcards or what.

CONTENT CDS from Seeing Mole
Seeing Mole writes:
I just want to voice my opinion about content CDs.
IMO, todays pics should at
least be 1024*768 or 512*768 or at least 768
pixels in vertical resolution. It's common for people to have 17"
and using
at least 1024*768 in screen resolutions nowadays.
In the old times, most people
had tiny 14" and used resolutions like
640*480 or 800*600 and it was OK for pics to be 640*480 size.
Slide/film scanners are also
getting very cheap and you can do excellent
high resolution scans on the films. Resize them down to something like
1200
pixels in vertical resolution. That way, if some webmasters who want
to
post to TGP with those pics, they may resize down to the resolution
they
like. This will also make people who want high resolution pics in their
member area happy.
For God sake, if you're going
to sell content, then spend some time and
RETOUCH and CROP out those black borders from the slide/film scans!
Don't
just quickly batch scan the whole lot and put on CD. You're working
on the
pics only once and the results will look much better. Dusts on pics
and bad
color should be unacceptable.
As for file format. I remember
in the old days, when files most likely came
in uncompressed 24 bit BMP or Kodak PhotoCD format or even worse GIF.
Kodak PhotoCD was a good format in the old days, but todays consumer
slide/film scanners are doing much better scans. Kodak PhotoCD also
usually
showed color artifacts. They tend to be a kinda yellowish IMO.
Don't be cheap and use a
regular flatbed scanner with transparency adapter.
Those sucks and the quality is miles away from what a dedicated slide/film
scanner can produce.
Also, don't use digital camera.
Per today, digital imaging still can't
provide the same quality and resolution as slides. Digital cameras may
be
used for REAL amateur pics or other "amateur/girl-next-door"
type in order
to get the "home made" feel.
The most preferred format
should be PNG. Those are lossless format and will
provide perfect quality to the pics. Everybody has image processing
utils
on their computers to compress to JPG. The JPG compression should be
left
to webmasters since everybody have their personal preferences about
quality
vs size. Most content CDs I've seen usually contains just a few hundred
pics, which compressed with PNG shouldn't have any problem filling a
CD.
Why not use the space on the CD to good use?
If there's really a lot of
pics, use JPG, but compress with very high
quality. 95 % or better. A tip to everybody, use PROGRESSIVE JPG. Not
only
will they gradually load in browsers like interlaced GIF, they'll also
be
smaller than regular JPG. The image quality is not affected whatsoever.
In
fact, there are utils out there which will losslessly convert regular
JPG
to progressive. The larger the pic, the more space you usually save.
If you use Photoshop, make
sure to turn OFF image previews. If you save JPG
with Photoshop and it's enabled, it'll embed a small preview at the
beginning of the JPG pic. This preview is USELESS for web browsers and
usually add a few K to a pic. Times that with a few hundred thousand
downloads and think about all that money you could have saved in bandwidth
costs.

CONTENT CD from Indian Joe
Indian Joe writes:
Personally, if i was making content and selling it on CD's I would only
include high quality jpg images (1024 x 768 or bigger, of course after
you crop the images they won't that dimension anymore but somewhere
in that range.) only. I find it pointless (redundent) to have bmp's,
gif's, and jpg's all on the CD of the same images....I think they did
that back then so that they could say "You get 3000 images (when
what you really get is 1000 jpg, 1000 bmp, and 1000 gif - they used
to try to screw you like that) Plus, photographs convert best to jpg
format (size and quality). I would prefer to have my photos large that
way when i go to build my websites I could shrink them the way that
I want too. I would also include several different sized thumbnails
as that is always hard to judge exacty what size people want - I'd try
to make the CD universal to satisfy the largest number of people, as
with anything I do. And I'd even include html and/or php pages to go
along with it....It could be WEB READY for them when they receive it.
So all they have to do is copy the contents off the folder to their
drive and upload it. Perhaps do a thing with a header and footer page
so they can drop in their logo and copyright info at the bottom. You
could achieve this either by using frames or includes on php pages...Something
along those lines.

PRO-LEVEL ROBOT EXCLUSION
from Dan
Dan writes:
I noticed your Robot exclusion stuff on the newsletter and I thought
I'd
make a few points.
#1 Don't rely on a robots.txt
file to restrict your files and directories.
The robots.txt file standard is an OPTION that robots can follow if
they
want to.
#2 Only polite bots pay attention
to the robots.txt file. Tons of bots
ignore it completely and some even check it out and specifically spider
files and directories you have made off limits.
#3 There is only one sure
way of keeping a rogue bot from spidering your
site or sucking bandwidth. You can set up a .htaccess file to restrict
access to files or modify your httpd.conf file to restrict access to
directories, files, or virtual domains. Most people who use virtual
domain
hosting don't have access to the httpd.conf file so I'll describe the
method
for the .htaccess files below. Remember, this is Apache webserver specific:
Create a file in a text editor
and call it ".htaccess". People using
Windows may have problems with this filename because of the "."
at the
begginning of the name... if you do, just name it "x.htaccess"
for now
(change the name to ".htaccess" after uploading). In the file,
put:
# begin .htaccess
SetEnvIf User-Agent ^EvilBot ban_me
<Files *>
<Allow>
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
Deny from env=ban_me
</Files>
# end .htaccess
Notice the part with the
word "EvilBot". You can replace this part with the
beginning of the User Agent string of any bot you want to ban. You can
also
ban specific IP addresses and or hostnames by using a line like:
Deny from 122.122.122.122
or:
Deny from bot.evilbot.com
The example I made above
denies access to all files. You could limit this
to specific files by using the following:
<Files ~ "\.(gif|jpe?g)$">
This line would restrict access to any GIF or JPEG file.
You can use .htaccess files
inside any directory and it will also affect the
subdirectories.

perlcoders.com/main.cgi?nitro
it has a lot of cgi scripts but
one in particular. Called easy page. What is does is it uses wilcard
dns and creates random virtual pages using any keyword list your
provide. It also makes image tags alt keys and so many other things.
Each page created is made specific for a search engine and updates
everytime the search engine spiders update. Also their will never be
the same page created. But whats so great is the wildcard dns. It
makes pages like pussy.yourdomain.com/pussy.html and in that page it
make link to sex.yourdomain.com/sex.html and so on using as many key
words as you give it all random. Its the best thing I have seen and
if
anyone is serious about getting search engine hits like we all are
this is the ONEEEEEEE.

QUESTION ABOUT IE HACKS
when you cruise TGPs, your IE inevitebly gets hacked. The default homepage
gets jacked and there are all these dumb links added to your favorites.
This is mildy annoying but I can live with it. What I HATE is that they
hack my SEARCH button. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Also, can
I customize this search with anything I want? I hate the IE choices
and since the porn crooks have hacked it...how can I hack it for myself?
Is it a hidden html page or something on my C drive?

BOXING AND FIGHTING UPDATES
seems that boxing has been on hold. The Big Trinidad Fight is now Sept
29. There was supposed to be a Ferocious Fernando Vargas fight this
saturday but now I am not so sure. Wait...just checked. Vargas says
"I am in the best shape of my life". This kid is tough. I
don;t like him but he sure is a tough boxer

UFC is next week and as I
have said before...should be huge. Wait. I have to rant. What are three
things I hate on a website...I know some of you will disagree....but
I hate the following
1. links with no html underline (to me, you are losing money if you
strip the underline...it is a trade off of style over function)
2. java menus (I hate java menus...give me html google links any day)
3. stupid music.
the UFC site has all three
of these things I hate....especially the stupid music :)
