Good morning hep kats and
kewl chicks. This week was fairly quite overall. Some of the big news
events that caught my eye were as follows. Did you see that Intel SLASHES
CPU prices 50%! They have to be trying to put the smackdown on AMD.
They then followed with a 2000mhz or 2 gig chip announcement. AMD followed
suit with a price slashing of their own to match Intel. Prices on CPU
will be awesome. Have you checked ram prices lately...go here are dial
in your mobo www.crucial.com I am like talking $35 for 256mb!
I have never ever seen prices like this...it is wild. I just ordered
up four 256 mem modules to soup up all the asus p2b boards here in the
cave. $140 +tax and shipping free in august...WOW. $35 for 256 ram!
I love that crucial site...they perhhaps have the best sales system
I have ever seen for ordering ram. They ask some quick questions and
you are done. I give that site a 10/10...it is just so well made.
There is a very interesting
article sent in from Delay this week called "Roll your own T1".
It seems that you can request an alarm system or a dead copper pair
and if the phone company gives them to you, you can cut those mother
fackers right out of the equation! I have not tried this, nor do I know
anyone who has. I wrote Wes the ISP to comment on it but he never wrote
back so I gotta give him a call. I will email Dayne and Gary and see
what they have to say about this and if it is really technically possible
since you could effectively cut the price of a T in half if it works.
Check out the article.
Something else that is happening
HUGE this week is that NS or ICANN is going to be releasing an unheard
of amount of expired domains. Something like a quarter of a million
names are going to flood the market this week. There are links to this
story on domain bot and other places and most registrars are gearing
up. I think it will be insane! Let me know if you do any fishing and
end up getting some good bites. I would have to think that the registration
computers will be totally swamped.
I also have the stats on
my continuing test of Google and Goto with clickhereforcellphones fun.
It has not gone to bad, but it has not gone too good either. I have
all the numbers and results for the last two weeks in my lower guru
section.
For the last week, each morning
I have been sucking back the Starbucks and reading an awesome book.
Before I tell you the book, I have to talk a minute about the proper
mixing ratio of starbucks coffee flavor crystals. Here is how I measure...I
grab the coffee holding pod containter and load it up with 50%-75% full.
My wife gags when she takes a sip. My mother claims she has to run for
the bathroom after taking a swig. To me, it tastes great. Everyone claims
it is too strong. The wife then tries to teach me the error of my ways
and buys me a measuring 2 tablespoon startbuck official measuring device.
We both read the pack...2 table spoons per 6 ounces of water. Since
out pot is 48 ounces, that is 8 of these spoons. We begin counting.
Let me tell you...that container was almost over flowing with grains.
I...the man who loves black tar, was even scared to brew that pot...we
had to laugh and remove at least half of that. Does anyone out their
in TV land, mix their starbucks to the specs on the bag? If so, how
does it taste? I have been too scared to even attempt it. The wife has
since given me a little more lee-way in my coffee eyeball measuring
techniques.....so I am drinking my coffee, and of course reading IBD
www.investors.com and when I start cup #2, I pick up this great
book. The book I am referring to is "JUST FOR FUN" by Linus
Torvalds
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0066620724/ref=ase_taunt/
If you grew up with Vic20, Buy this book. If you had a commodore 64,
buy this book. If you ever dwelve into the world of machine or assmbler/assembly
language, buy this book. You will identify with it from the word go.
If you are a self proclaimed geek, buy this book. If you are a programmer,
buy this book. If you love Linux, buy this book. I have been smiling
since page one. I really didn't know what to expect and it is all about
the young lad growing up as a computer nerd and loving computers and
how he eventually creates his first OS in a way to better mimix. From
there, a revolution just happened. I remember back maybe 4-5 comdexes
ago, I was wandering the Linux expo, and there he was "Linus Torvalds"
3 feet away! I was too scared to say hi and he looked as nervous or
shy as everyone else :) This is just a very fun book from a man that
has a very definite opinion on how a computer OS should be made and
I think he is right on track. AMEX and NYSE stock exchanges just announced
they are going Linux

MISSPELLED DOMAINS from Karen
Karen writes
Following the various discussions on misspelled
trademarks in the Trix newsletter, I thought I'd add
my own contribution:
My Adventures with Misspelled
Domains
Just wanted to relate my
own little experience with an
expired domain and misspelled trademarks.
I was trawling through the directNIC expired domains
newsletter and was thrilled to come across
bloombergs.com. You probably know that Bloomberg is a
major financial service and I figured Id get a lot of
mistaken type-ins.
I sat down to make a nice little easy site, but I got
a little mischievous and ended up making a spectacular
parody of the Bloomberg site. I checked copyright law:
it said that parodies were not a breach of copyright.
I checked Bloombergs own list of trademarks:
bloombergs was not on it. I even put a link to
Bloomberg.com at the bottom of the site.
I made one sale, overnight.
The site lasted less than a week before the Bloomberg
lawyers ordered my host to pull it down. Then I got
the D and C letter.
Turns out, the domain had been the subject of an ICANN
dispute which had been ruled in Bloombergs favour.
The lawyers said the domain infringed on Bloombergs
trademarks, copyright and trade dress. And the
stupid lawyers had lost control of the domain when it
expired, so it fell into my lap.
In the end, I didnt fight it, because a) I am a poor
Australian with no money to spend on lawyers b) ICANN
had already made a decision on the name.
They promised to pay me for the domain, I made them
promise not to come after me if I sent the transfer
form to them. As yet I have had no cheques from them.
Im sending in this story as something of a cautionary
tale. I still believe that I did not infringe on
trademark or copyright, and I still think that
misspelled domains should not be considered to be
trademarks. But who can fight a bunch of New York
lawyers with a shitload of money behind them?
- Kayel
PS. I've put the site up so you can see what it looked
like. It's at:

MISSPELLED DOMAINS by Guru-O-Gif
I know many of your don't want to hear this, but I tend to side with
the courts on the mis-spelled issue. The fact is, a misspelled domain
makes money because of the marketing of the correct spelled name. When
we see sites like SexSwip.com or sexswapper.com, flames shoot from my
nose. Imagine your best site and then someone copying it and or the
url. Still, I see the point that many times the lawyers step way over
bounds...McDonald's is infamous for suing the crap out of any store
named McDonalds and I tend to disagree with that when your last name
IS mcdonald. This is a tough issue. So far the courts have favored the
companies and that has been the law. Even if you disagree with the court
decisions...I think it is financial suicide to go into battles against
corporate lawyers. You will save yourself grief abandonning the name
if asked to. Remember when Terri Wells fought Playboy and won. Well
it cost her 2 years of her life and I think $250,000. Those kind of
battles have to suck the life out of you.

COMMENTS ON BRIAN K WEST

Delay writes:
Here are my comments on the Brian K. West story you ran in sexswap....
This guy in no way deserves to be convicted. Did he alter or steal the
data on the sites that he accessed? Not according to any of the information.
Did he contact the company and try to explain the security hole so it
could be fixed. Yes. This guy should be thanked and not prosecuted.
Would it have been better for him to just note the security hole and
move on not notifying anyone so the next person can come along and destroy
stuff. If I was that newspaper, I would have instantly switched hosting
companies to whoever Brian West Worked for. Atleast they are on the
ball when it comes to security issues. The bank in the article which
had the same problem is inexcusable. If anyone should be looking at
a conviction it should be them for not taking adequate security measures
in the first place. They are a bank! What they did is like storing piles
of money in the guest lobby and then becoming surprised when someone
takes it.

11 BROKERS SPOOFING by Guru-O-Gif
here is another reason why it is not a good idea to purchase thinly
traded stocks. It seems that 11 brokers were doing the following...on
thinly traded stocks...they would issue a quote..a false quote above
market.....then quickly retract it and say it was an error....well fuck,
imagine how many sell orders that would set off...what a pile of shit
manouver that is....the NASD should have some programming filters to
watch for % of quote errors issued by brokers and then nail these market
manipulators to the wall. I wish I had a link to the story but it was
behind the IBD password area. I will keep my eye out for an url this
week. Please email me if you see more on this story.

This is clearly MBAs wet behind the ears. This has happened to porn
sites for years and years. Crooks have been using this common way of
laundering stolen cards into cash for at least three years. Flooz should
of contacted porn webmasters for advice. All they needed to do was keep
an eye on things! When you get 1000 chargebacks from people saying they
never ordered anything...guess what? Also, $300,000? ...come on... this
is a chunk of change but cretainly not enough to shut down a site. I
have porn buddies hit for $100k, $200k, and more and they are all still
in business. Why? Because they don't have a staff of 1000 employees
to run a 12 person site. Flooz is using this as an escape goat for "burning
money" and for "head-up-the-ass-itis".

3 WAYS IF YOU HAVE DUAL CPUS
RUNNING IN LINUX from Guru-O-Gif
I was just reading the latest linux mag and saw a couple of ways to
tell if your dual CPUs are recognized by the system. Some linux distros
work dual processors out of the box but it is a good rule of thumb to
rebuild your kernel with SMP (symetrical multi processing) tuened on.
Here are some commands for dual boxes to see if it is working
uname -a
the results you want to see SMP somewhere in the line
another way is to look in
the boot up dmesg for an indication
dmesg | grep SMP
and the way I prefer is to
do a
cat /proc/cpuinfo
and this lists the two chips
if they are working correctly. Now you might want to alter that since
I have been tricked before since the info is too large for teh screen
cat /proc/cpuinfo | more
the chips are names 0 and 1 rather than 1 and 2. Hey, here is another
way
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep processor

most part for $15 per month. So everyone can have a T-1 in there house.
What is even more interesting is what happens if people start hooking
wireles access points to it and we can create our own wireless broadband
system instead of waiting another decade or two for the current monopolies
to decide they are ready to implement this. I thought you might be very
interested since you are already running a t-1 to your house.

LET'S GET OUT THE ABACUS AND DO SOME ANALYSIS
ok, here is the latest on my testing of goto and google and cellphones.
I would say I am disappointed overall. I believe I am in the black,
but since the numbers are so small, it has been a HELLA effort for a
few pennies. Last time I mentioned that I would dry cut the traffic
into channels to better monitor
TYPE IN CLICKS ON LIPS
clicks 2952

GOOGLE (big disappointment)

waiting 2
Cash $0
Cost $39.73
GOTO
clicks 283
applications 16
denied 14
sales 0
waiting 2
Cash $0
Cost $17
After 3 weeks I have made
$79 - 57 = $22 ...(say in a voice like daffy duck) yahooo....I am independantly
wealthy! I am socially secure! I'm rich I'm rich!
Eek. Now I could try altering
my site again which I will do this week. One trouble is that I might
violate Goto's rules..we shall see. I think I am going to forward Google
right to the sign in page and the same with lips and test like that
for a week since I have always believed the shorter path to sales seems
to win out.
here are some other interesting
thoughts.
1. I always find it hard to beat My Gamma (baseline measure) account.
I test and I test and I always come back to gamma cash since it has
never failed to make me the most on pron type ins. Over 3 weeks in the
slow of summer I probably would of made $75 (1 sign up a week minimum)
on those type ins. I made the same on the cellphones but spent money.
But, I should argue that it would of been a tie if I had just done type
ins which shows he cell phone sales are pretty good.
www.gammacash.com
www.clickhereforcellphones.com
2. Mainstream is still tricky
to crack. I am in the black though...the trouble is this....all I need
to really open the floodgates is for goto to get profitable...once you
get sales...you can punch up your bid rate and get larger traffic. $22
profit is fine...especially when all you need is more traffic...but
my signups came from type ins and not the engines which makes me sad.
I have always said "traffic is key" and here it is once again
as the best of all traffic is free traffic.
3. I think people who sell
their own products that they manufacturer could do very well on the
engines since their margins would be much higher. I always find reselling
anything gets trickier as margins are less. the benefit is that it is
way less work or danger of overhead...but you make less per sale...sort
of like my previous amazon test. I have sold $4000 in amazon books...that
made me a weak $375...imagine if I wrote the books I was selling and
produced them to make 50% rather than 7%
4. Google just seems priced
too high. You would really have to have a special product or phat phat
margins to make it work. 2 applications for $40 where goto bought me
16 applications for $17. Goto has the model to beat in terms of fairness.
Here is my google report
2655 showings 146 clicks 5.5% $40
that is 146 clicks for $40
that is 27 cents a click! goto at 5 cents is 1/5 the price
I will continue to toggle
the switches and report in the findings. If anyone else is doing similar
testings, i am sure we would love to hear your results. andy@lips.com

NO FIGHTS THIS WEEK
I was babbling about fighting on ICQ this week with my old Quake3 pal
"Auston Powers". Now, I am going to show you something I don't
use or necessarily agree with. I buy all my software (hard to believe
but I just haven't ever been much of a pirate)...I just feel that if
I wrote that code, I would want some coin, but I am not blind to the
fact that 99.9% of us has some sort of priated code...ok, you caught
me...I did run my windows2000 cd on two computers when I only have one
licence. That being said, some of you may find the following stuff on
TV dishes very interesting. I just have always referred to these as
"card decoders". Austin filled me in with the latest sites
and terms and I guess they are referred to as emulators, unloopers,
bootloaders, and some other things. Here is the skinny. If you have
a dish, you get a credit card type thing that has the secret decoder
ring inside it to allow you to watch the events you pay for and the
satellite talks to you little card. Well a couple years ago my canadian
pals were buying fully open cards for $200. Seems canadians especially
enjoy the fleecing of satellite technology :) They would literlly make
trips to the US and buy 10 dish systems, throw the whole unit in the
cash, grab the cards, head home, open the cards for all 500 channels
and boxing events, then sell the cards to hungry friends for $200 to
$400 a card. Eventually the dish people became wise and there is now
the constant game of spy vs spy, same as we have in porn with crooks.
In my opinion, this is illegal...you
have been warned, illegal yet rather interesting. You can now buy the
hardware to write and re write your cards with computer software. This
means you can literally give yourself every channel and boxing and mixed
martial art fight and porn and pay movies...free (illegally)...oh yes,
people will tell you it is not illegal...just like they used to say
it was legal to make a porn site from pics in usenet :) I would have
to think the dish corps are currently loosing the war since the info
is spreading so quickly and up to date on the net.
