I have to go back in time to use one word to describe this week's swap news....it is HELLA big. I wanted to make a comment on mis-spelled domain names. I agree with
Brien. If a company registers/trademarks a certain name than that is the
name that is registered. There are some clothing companies out there (big
ones like Tommy Hilfiger Jeans) who have competitors sewing on labels that
say "Tommy Jeans". It's dirty (because Tommy Hilfiger Jeans say - I think -
"Tommy Hilfiger Jeans" not "Tommy Jeans"), but that's the way the world
works. I myself don't wear either of these brands, so I may not be exactly
right on this one, but I do know that two or more companies make those
multicolor-fade jerseys. One of the companies is Ecco, one is Exco, and I
think there is another. The point is the jerseys look identical but they're
made with different names on them - one 4 times the cost of the other.
Perhaps thats just one company altogether being smart and selling the same
product under two names to corner two price markets, but either way it goes
back to the name thing. If you register a name then thats the name you've
registered - not variations of it.

I decided to be the "skeptic" and I wrote to the editor of the newspaper and asked "what's up with this Brian K. West story...give me your side of it". He emailed me the story...I wish I had a URL for it. I will use legal mumbo to avoid trouble...alegedly this person attempted, not once, not twice, but several hundred times to gain access to the website. I would call anything over 3 times a "hack". Allegedly this Mr West also entered the local bank computers and had access to account names and balances. Remember that this was back in 2000 and I remember when this MS FrontPage hack hit. Dayne had told me about it and he was upgrading all their server computers.

Now, I have to admit that I do feel some sympathy for the kid since he might of read about a hack and wanted to try it. Here is an analogy that might make you less sympathetic. What if you owned a Nightclub or computer store or restaurant and someone posted in the newspaper on how to file down a Toyota car key to be used is Schlage dead bolts and these locks were used on your business. let's say a kid does this and enters your business, after hours, and searches through your file cabinets at 3AM and looks in your cash register. Would you have sympathy for the person doing this break and entry even if he came to you and told you he did it? I would have fire coming from my nostrils. Are these crimes equivalent? maybe not exactly, but close. 5 years probabtion? Well, if these facts are true...I think that is close to a proper sentence...maybe on the stiff side since it might of been a goofy kid experimenting...maybe negotiate for 2 years prob or a fine. It is a tough one to call.

I think of all the server companies, I tend to like the Penguin Computing boxes. They have been around for a few years and have ads in the mags. They are not the cheapest and they are not the most expensive.

I use pay-per-click search engines for several non-adult clients of
mine. The ones that seem to work pretty good are:

For the most part it has been really easy to add large groups of keywords.
It is really rare anything gets rejected for anything. Plus a lot of smaller
engines you've never heard of use these larger ones (especially 7search,
kanoodle, sprinks) to display results so if you bid at least 4 cents or 7
cents or whatever their "partner site" minimum is, you get a lot of exposure
quickly. I can only remember one time that a keyword was rejected and it
turned out to be a misunderstanding that got straightened out. And on each
of these engines I might have 200-300 keywords and key phrases per client. I
don't even use GoTo for most of the sites ... too time-consuming and
expensive ... and I think we are doing just fine by using these slightly
smaller ones anyway.

Also, another tip ... don't just blindly sign up for accounts online with
these engines. Get a phone number and call an account rep, talk to them.
You will find that there are often matching bonuses (open an account for $100
and they double it) or at least some kind of break, a $25 bonus or something,
especially if you are talking at least $500 to open. Also, talk to them
about buying keywords on their portal pages, partner sites, or their own
front pages. Not everyone can do that, I have some clients that start out
with only $25 per search engine, but if you at least try to get a better deal
than the published rate you might be pleasantly surprised.

The guys are great at Kanoodle. I've talked to them on the phone a few times
when I had some clients that had the larger dollars to spend and they are
really good about working out deals with you.

I don't recommend the pay-per-click engines that are smaller volume than the
ones I listed. Reason: because you have to open an account and pay the money
up front. Even if you only open an account with $25, and you are only paying
1 cent per click, with their low volume it will be decades before you get the
hits you are looking for. And the lesser-known ones probably do not have the
partner sites that give the exposure and extra listings like I mentioned in
my earlier letter. So, you might tie up $200 with losers that get you 2 hits
a day, that money could be better spent on mid-level search engines getting
your clicks much quicker. If you pick about 6 of the medium-sized engines,
you'll have a reasonable number that you can check daily and tweak
accordingly.

I wasn't impressed with GoTo and I feel I'm getting a better buy for my money
at 7search, findwhat, sprinks, kanoodle, and bay9 combined.

FREE BSD AND LAST WEEK'S FASTEST OS STORY from Stel

I should write a letter to the editor on this one. FreeBSD losing to
Windows 2000? What Universe do this people live in? And forcing FreeBSD
to handle more than 511 concurrent events is a kernel violation ANYWAY.
Thats why there is a commercial O/S package called BSDi which runs $4000.

They used UFS for FreeBSD? Jesus... Now I know why the FreeBSD lost out.
A moron installing the O/S right out of the box with preconceived notions
of what it should be installed as.

And with the final reading of this article I now I understand why the
FreeBSD totally blew. They though they could tweak the filedescriptors
factor. Which you can but ONLY to the limit of 511 simulataneous events
per second. Testing the systems at 511+ results in completely false readings.

And the last time I checked RedHat and Slackware Linux both have the same
limitation which is hard coded into the .h and .c files and cannot be
overcome without extensive modifications at the source file level.

COMMENTS ON OS LIMITATIONS AND TESTING from Craig

I don't know about the linux limitation but starting in the 2.4 kernels the
max # of processes is now dynamic based on your available resources
(although I do believe the 1024 max open file limitation still exists).
Even with the pre2.4 kernels the modifications weren't "extensive"...it was
a matter of changing a couple lines in a few files...although kernel
compiling is not exactly something everyone can do anyone with any
unix/programming knowledge should have no problems changing these
limitations easily. The 2.4 kernels work much better at handling the
processes though so I recommend anyone planning on recompiling their kernel
just to upgrade to the latest production version just to make your life all
that much easier. And let's not forget the built in limitations are
actually a good thing rather than a bad. Everyone and their mother are
starting to play around with linux systems, installing all forms of software
and running all sorts of things. The limitations are setup to stop
accidental process flooding of the server totally crashing it and
potentially crippling the OS. WIth the built in limitations even with
processes running full tilt using up all the allocated resources someone can
still log onto the server locally and correct the problem. I suppose the
theory is that once you understand how to remove the limitations you are
wise enough to understand how the server operates and how to properly
allocate resources to all given tasks.

Also in my opinion every OS has it's positives and negatives. For
example...if I am running a server to have a website/database/cgi/php what
have you...basically a loaded server...I would pick linux any day of the
week as from my own experience it has some great memory and thread
management built in. On the other hand if you're just needing a bandwidth
demon the BSD OSes are proven champions in that aspect however I find them
lacking on the thread management (although I haven't paid much attention to
BSD in over a year). And then at the same time not all linux versions run
the same either....take slackware 8 for example....when we installed that
for taunt it could barely handle 300 or so of our spider processes and even
then the server load was crazy...smoke had to be coming out of the
server...when we changed back to slack 7 I doubled the # of spiders being
used and the server still could handle more if MySQL could take it hehe.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are a million and one benchmarking
tests for OSes and they all usually show different results as there are a
number of factors involved. Sure Windows 2000 can beat FreeBSD....but what
was being tested...what type of system and resources with it? What did they
test? Perhaps Windows 2k can hit a higher max. bandwith transfer rate, but
maybe FreeBSD could hold a higher average when it came to larger numbers of
simultaneous transfers. All these forms of tests need to be taken w/ a
grain of salt. For instance. I say linux is great at thread
management...this is assuming there is enough physical memory on the server
to handle it...if you're running less than 256megs I have seen linux start
coughing up blood with just a few hundred processes but with 512 or 1GB of
physical memory, I can throw a plethora of simultaneous processes at the
server and won't see any problems.

I would never recommend using a 3rd party benchmarking test as a basis for
what OS to use....95% of the unix based OSes are free so why not take the
time to try a number of them out and see what works best for you. Plus one
should never use an out of the box solution if you're staking your
business's livelyhood on it. There never is an instant solution that is
perfect for you no matter what people say. Better to hire a system admin
temporarily to setup the system for you and tweak it for your needs.
Chances are it'd still wind up being cheaper that way than buying a
commerical package plus the added bonus of getting exactly what you want and
not settling for what is being offered.

address problem. Found an awesome way around it with some cool free
software I thought you might want to pass along.

It's called dns2go. (ftp://ftp1.deerfield.com/pub/dns2go/d2gsetup.exe)
absolutely free. Here's what it does.

First, you can either choose to have a subdomain with them
(joeshmoe.d2g.com) or use your own eatme.com
The software installed on your system talks with their servers and keeps
track of your ip address. Every time it changes on your machine, because
of reboot or whatever, it changes on there system. So, when some one
types in your address, it goes to them and they route it back to your
machine. Also, if your machine is down, they have an error page for the
visitor set up on there system. Awesome shit.

I have been testing a little, trying to find the best and easiest server
software. Found a great place for free ware (found this program there)
www.webattack.com. Been trying some of the free web server
software they have, but need something that can handle .asp Any ideas?

CONTINUED TESTING OF GOTO AND GOOGLE
I don't have too much to report on my testing of the engines with my cell phone test. Here are a couple note. Remember last week I had 90 words declined on goto and felt it was because of computer filters. I submitted the words manually and they passed...BUT I also added more to my site and so it is not a clean test of my theory. I am getting more and more applications but few approvals yet since they seem to take time. One thing I am testing is going from 5 cents to 7 cents on many words. I probably did it prematurely to having a better grasp of sign up data. Here is my current theory on goto
I am getting 1 application submitted per 10 clicks. that is 50 cents for an application. My theory is that I will have a 25% or 1 in 4 approval rate...I am not sure if this is accurate or overly pessimistic yet. If true, this means it takes 40 clicks to get 1 approval. 40 click time 5 cents is $2.00...payout is $37...that is huge room for error. If I have a 1:15 apprioval rate, I would still make money and I think it will be 1:4 to 1:5 and this is why I edged closer to 7 cents.

The biggest disappointment has been goggle. 50 clicks and NO applications. I think GOTO people are shoppers. When I want to buy something...I frequently use goto since I know eager sellers with good sites are at the top. would also argue that Google makes the text for the ads short. I prefer long copy since it sells better. Even goto has short ads but they are a lot more words than google. My click rate on google has been good...just no applications. Very interesting. More stats as they occur in future weeks on this testing
